Authority, Experience and the Life of Power
Free Download Julian Brigstocke, Leila Dawney, "Authority, Experience and the Life of Power"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 1138809365, 1138379468 | EPUB | pages: 158 | 0.3 mb
Taking up the challenge of understanding power in its complexity, this volume returns to and revitalises the concept of 'authority'. It provides a powerful analysis of the ways that relationships of trust, attachment, governance and inequality become possible when subjectivities and bodies are invested in the life of power. The collection offers a vibrant new analysis of the biopolitical, arguing that 'experience of life' has become equated with 'objectivity' in contemporary culture and has thus become a primary basis of authority. 'Biopolitical' or 'experiential' authority can be generated through reference to a variety of experiences, performances or intensities of life including creativity, radicalism, risk-taking, experimentation, inter-relation, suffering and proximity to death. The authority-producing capacities of community and aesthetics are key issues, pointing to vexed relationships between politics and policing, inventiveness and violence.

Authority in the Modern State
Free Download Harold J. Laski, "Authority in the Modern State"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 101651509X | EPUB | pages: 158 | 0.4 mb
As a sequel to Studies in the Problem of Sovereignty, this volume, originally published in 1919, expands Laski's pluralist doctrine of the state, (using France as its reference) but covers rather broader ground, since its main object is to insist that the problem of sovereignty is only a special case of the problem of authority. The result is a positive, constructive analysis of politics and the theory of the state which examines the division and organisation of power, the limitations of power and the significance of freedom, the political theory of Bonald, the revival of traditionalism and the role of the Church and the Civil Service.

Criteria of authenticity have long featured in New Testament studies. Some argue these tools are unique-even idiosyncratic-to Jesus research, but this study demonstrates that general historians employ similar criteria to the same effect as historians of Jesus.

Augustus Introduction to the Life of an Emperor
Free Download Karl Galinsky, "Augustus: Introduction to the Life of an Emperor"
English | ISBN: 0521767970 | 2012 | 226 pages | PDF | 9 MB
Augustus, Rome's first emperor, is one of the great figures of world history and one of the most fascinating. In this lively and concise biography Karl Galinsky examines Augustus' life from childhood to deification. He chronicles the mosaic of vicissitudes, challenges, setbacks, and successes that shaped Augustus' life, both public and private. How did he use his power? How did he manage to keep reinventing himself? What kind of man was he? A transformative leader, Augustus engineered profound change in Rome and throughout the Mediterranean world. No one would have expected such vast achievements from the frail and little-known eighteen-year-old who became Caesar's heir amid turmoil and crisis. A mere thirteen years later, after defeating Antony and Cleopatra, he had, in his words, "power over all things."

Augustine's Confessions Philosophy in Autobiography
Free Download William E. Mann, "Augustine's Confessions: Philosophy in Autobiography"
English | ISBN: 0199577552 | 2014 | 238 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Augustine's Confessions is a masterpiece of world literature. Written by Augustine in his forties, at the height of his philosophical and rhetorical skills, the Confessions is at once autobiographical, philosophical, theological, and psychological. The aim of the eight essays commissioned for the present volume is to provide an examination and discussion of some of the philosophical issues raised by Augustine. What constitutes the happy or blessed life and what is required to achieve it? The essays question the role that philosophical perplexity plays in the search for truth, and the mental discipline that is required for conducting the search; in addition to asking how Augustine depicts the acquisition of truth as a vision of God. Furthermore, they discuss the problems that arise in the attempt to understand minds, both our own and others, and ask about the interplay between what reason tells us is right and what we will to do. What are the impediments to an individual's moral progress, and how far are these impediments created by the temptations to indulge in such fictions as dramas and dreams? What is the nature of eternity, and how does eternity differ from time? How should scripture be interpreted, especially the account of creation of the material world in Genesis?
