Author: Anthony M. DeStefano
Narrator: Romy Nordlinger

Indiana-born Vivian Gordon fluttered to New York in 1920 looking for fame and fortune. Before long, the flame-haired chorus girl parlayed her youth, beauty, and ambition into more profitable means as a tough and glamorous symbol of Prohibition-era excess. She was a speakeasy owner, blackmailer, high-end escort, extortionist, racketeer, and con woman. But given her dangerously intimate associations, Vivian was also a woman who knew too much and who rightfully feared for her life. On February 26, 1931, Vivian's bludgeoned and garroted body was found dumped in Van Cortland Park in the Bronx.

British Architecture A Very Short Introduction [Audiobook]
Free Download British Architecture: A Very Short Introduction (Audiobook)
English | ASIN: B0D7QXCLHP | 2024 | 4 hours and 19 minutes | M4B@128 kbps | 228 MB
Author: Dana Arnold
Narrator: Julia Anthony

British Architecture presents an original and engaging overview of the architecture of the British Isles, from medieval times to the present day. Avoiding the traditional approach of a chronological survey of architects and architectural style, each chapter presents a thematic exploration of key aspects of British architecture that endure across time and still have relevance today. Arnold also highlights the ways in which architecture can project national and regional identities. British architecture tells of the intrinsic nature of Britishness and is an important means of understanding Britain's connection with the world. There is no doubt about the international significance of the work of recent and contemporary British architects. But Arnold also relates how a preoccupation with the past has been a constant theme in design. A thematic, historical understanding of British architecture in terms of its form and purpose explains much about society and culture. Architecture continues to shape patterns of living and social interaction and responds to new demands. Equally, debates about how best to express the nation through its architecture reveal much about Britain's perception of itself. Finally, Arnold explores how subsequent generations can offer new interpretations and meanings that change our view of British architecture's legacy.

Author: Barbara Bradley Hagerty
Narrator: Barbara Bradley Hagerty

How states are making their legal systems more equitable, seen through the story of a Black man falsely imprisoned for thirty years for murder. In 1987, Ben Spencer, a twenty-two-year-old Black man from Dallas, was convicted of murdering white businessman Jeffrey Young-a crime he didn't commit. From the day of his arrest, Spencer insisted that it was "an awful mistake." The Texas legal system didn't see it that way. It allowed shoddy police work, paid witnesses, and prosecutorial misconduct to convict Spencer of murder, and it ignored later efforts to correct this error. The state's bureaucratic intransigence caused Spencer to spend more than half his life in prison. Eventually independent investigators, new witness testimony, the foreman of the jury that convicted him, and a new Dallas DA convinced a Texas judge that Spencer had nothing to do with the killing, and in 2021 he was released from prison. As Spencer's fight to clear himself demonstrates, our legal systems are broken: expedience is more important than the truth.

Bright–sided How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America
Free Download Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America by Barbara Ehrenreich, Kate Reading, Macmillan Audio
English | October 13, 2009 | ASIN: B002SRC2L8 | 7 hours and 27 minutes | MP3 | 205 Mb
Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-sided is a sharp-witted knockdown of America's love affair with positive thinking and an urgent call for a new commitment to realism
Americans are a "positive" people-cheerful, optimistic, and upbeat: this is our reputation as well as our self-image. But more than a temperament, being positive, we are told, is the key to success and prosperity.
In this utterly original take on the American frame of mind, Barbara Ehrenreich traces the strange career of our sunny outlook from its origins as a marginal nineteenth-century healing technique to its enshrinement as a dominant, almost mandatory, cultural attitude. Evangelical mega-churches preach the good news that you only have to want something to get it, because God wants to "prosper" you. The medical profession prescribes positive thinking for its presumed health benefits. Academia has made room for new departments of "positive psychology" and the "science of happiness." Nowhere, though, has bright-siding taken firmer root than within the business community, where, as Ehrenreich shows, the refusal even to consider negative outcomes-like mortgage defaults-contributed directly to the current economic crisis.
