Medical Humanities in American Studies Life Writing, Narrative Medicine, and the Power of Autobiography
Free Download Mita Banerjee, "Medical Humanities in American Studies: Life Writing, Narrative Medicine, and the Power of Autobiography "
English | ISBN: 3825369064 | 2018 | 390 pages | PDF | 4 MB
This book asks a seemingly simple question: How has the creation of new fields such as medical humanities and narrative medicine changed the humanities themselves, and American Studies more specifically? Turning to the genre of life writing, this study sets out to chart spaces in which a dialogue between the humanities and the life sciences can emerge. At the beginning of the twenty-first century, life writing narratives such as Tito Mukhopadhyay's 'Beyond the Silence', Temple Grandin's 'Thinking in Pictures', or Michael J. Fox's 'Lucky Man' show that self-description has often become inseparable from biomedical terminology. Linking life writing narratives to discussions in bioethics and exploring the links between autobiography and brain research, this book sets out to wonder whether the divide between the "two cultures" of the humanities and the life sciences may not itself have become obsolete.

Medical Geochemistry Geological Materials and Health
Free Download Medical Geochemistry: Geological Materials and Health By Paolo Censi, E. Tamburo, L. A. Randazzo, Pierpaolo Zuddas (auth.), Paolo Censi, Thomas Darrah, Yigal Erel (eds.)
2013 | 194 Pages | ISBN: 9400743718 | PDF | 5 MB
This book includes a collection of chapters illustrating the application of geochemical methods to investigate the interactions between geological materials and fluids with humans. Examples include the incorporation and human health effects of inhaling lithogenic materials, the reactivity of biological fluids with geological materials, and the impact on nascent biomineral formation. Biomineralization is investigated in terms of mineralogy, morphology, bone chemistry, and pathological significance with a focus on the health impacts of "foreign" geological/environmental trace element incorporation. One of the contribution is devoted to particulate matter, the presence of metals and metalloids in the environment, and the possibility of using human hair as a biomarker between environmental/geological exposure and human bioincorporation. Other chapters focus on the last advances on the analytical methods and instrumentational approaches to investigating the chemistry of biological fluids and tissues.

Media, Conflict, and the State in Africa
Free Download Nicole Stremlau, "Media, Conflict, and the State in Africa"
English | ISBN: 1108426859 | 2018 | 186 pages | PDF | 3 MB
Countries emerging from violent conflict face difficult challenges about what the role of media should be in political transitions, particularly when attempting to build a new state and balance a difficult legacy. Media, Conflict, and the State in Africa discusses how ideas, institutions and interests have shaped media systems in some of Africa's most complex state and nation-building projects. This timely book comes at a turbulent moment in global politics as waves of populist protests gain traction, and concerns continue to grow about fake news, social media echo chambers, and the increasing role of both traditional and new media in waging wars or influencing elections. Focusing on comparative cases from a historical perspective and the choices and ideas that informed the approaches of some of Africa's leaders, including guerrilla commanders Yoweri Museveni of Uganda and Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia, Nicole Stremlau offers a unique political insight into the development of contemporary media systems in Africa.

Mechanobiology of Cell–Cell and Cell–Matrix Interactions
Free Download A. Wagoner Johnson, Brendan Harley, "Mechanobiology of Cell-Cell and Cell-Matrix Interactions"
English | 2011 | pages: 334 | ISBN: 1441980822, 1489973796 | PDF | 7,1 mb
Mechanobiology of Cell-Matrix Interactions focuses on characterization and modeling of interactions between cells and their local extracellular environment, exploring how these interactions may mediate cell behavior. Studies of cell-matrix interactions rely on integrating engineering, (molecular and cellular) biology, and imaging disciplines. Recent advances in the field have begun to unravel our understanding of how cells gather information from their surrounding environment, and how they interrogate such information during the cell fate decision making process. Topics include adhesive and integrin-ligand interactions; extracellular influences on cell biology and behavior; cooperative mechanisms of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions; the mechanobiology of pathological processes; (multi-scale) modeling approaches to describe the complexity or cell-matrix interactions; and quantitative methods required for such experimental and modeling studies.
