Free Download Kelly Tremblay, "Translational Perspectives in Aduitory Neuroscience: Normal Aspects of Hearing" English | ISBN: 1597562025 | 2012 | 576 pages | EPUB | 68 MB Virtually anything related to hearing that has a scientific basis could be included in a book so labeled, but this book is part of a mission to improve dialogue between basic and applied scientists so that health-related science can translate in many directions: from bench to bedside and vice versa. The editors are clinical audiologists as well as classically trained hearing scientists, who, are committed to the advancement of translational research. To do this, colleagues who work along each step of the scientific continuum, from basic to applied, provided information that was theoretically deep, but contextually broad. In some instances this meant pairing authors (clinicians and scientists) who would not normally write together and asking them to co-author chapters. A diverse group of students, post-docs, and scientists also interacted with the authors by asking questions and infusing comments during the review process. This process ensured both basic and applied material would be integrated. One example is the final chapter in the third book in the series on Auditory Plasticity and Auditory Training. Rather than simply review evidence of experience-related physiological changes documented in animal models, the authors chose to address the functional significance of auditory plasticity as it pertains to auditory learning . By simply revisiting the concepts of plasticity in relation to learning there has been a resurgence of interest in the area as it pertains to auditory rehabilitation. The challenge was to present the literature in a way that allowed us to ask the tough questions like Does a statistically-significant change in perception (or biology) necessarily constitute a functionally relevant change in behavior? More importantly, do the observed changes impact a person s ability to communicate? And does it impact their quality of life? Free Download Gregory Shaw, "Theurgy and the Soul: The Neoplatonism of Iamblichus Ed 2" English | ISBN: 1621380637 | 2014 | 350 pages | PDF | 4 MB Theurgy and the Soul is a study of Iamblichus of Syria (ca. 240-325), whose teachings set the final form of pagan spirituality prior to the Christianization of the Roman Empire. Gregory Shaw focuses on the theory and practice of theurgy, a term meaning "divine action," the most controversial and significant aspect of Iamblichus's Platonism. Unlike previous Platonists, who stressed the elevated status of the human soul, Iamblichus taught that the soul descends completely into the body and requires the performance of theurgic rites--revealed by the gods-to unite the soul with the One.Iamblichus was a seminal Platonic philosopher whose views on the soul and the importance of ritual profoundly influenced subsequent thinkers such as Proclus, Damascius, and Dionysius the Areopagite. Iamblichus's vision of a hierarchical cosmos united by divine ritual became the dominant worldview for the entire medieval world, and played an important role in the Renaissance Platonism of Marsilio Ficino. Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote that he expected a reading of Iamblichus to cause a "revival in the churches." Yet, until recently, modern scholars have dismissed him, seeing theurgy as ritual magic or an attempt to manipulate the gods. Shaw, however, shows that theurgy was a subtle and intellectually sophisticated attempt to apply Platonic and Pythagorean teachings to the full expression of human existence in the material world. This new edition includes a foreword by John Milbank and Aaron Riches showing the Christian sacramental implications of Iamblichean theurgy, and a new preface from the author. |
