![]() Free Download Katie A. Bernstein, "(Re)defining Success in Language Learning: Positioning, Participation and Young Emergent Bilinguals at School " English | ISBN: 1788928997 | 2024 | 200 pages | PDF | 7 MB This book follows four emergent bilingual students in an English-medium pre-kindergarten in the US as they navigate the social and linguistic demands of school. It illustrates how students' differing classroom social positions shaped their participation in interaction and, in turn, their English language learning across a school year. With a unique focus on both processes and outcomes, the book highlights language strategies that are overlooked if the focus is solely on one language or on group participation, and it emphasizes the importance of assessment choice in shaping which learners appear to be successful. It is a powerful argument for recognising the translingual and multimodal abilities of learners, even in education which is officially English-medium and monolingual. ![]() Free Download Klavdia Smola, "(Counter-)Archive: Memorial Practices of the Soviet Underground " English | ISBN: 3031671325 | 2024 | 542 pages | EPUB | 57 MB This book is the first major study exploring archival and memorial practices of the Soviet unofficial culture. The creation of counter-archives was one of the most important forms of cultural resistance in the Soviet Union. Unofficial artists and poets had to reinvent the possibilities of maintaining art and literature that "did not exist". Against the background of archival theories and memory studies, the volume explores how the culture of the Soviet underground has become one of the most striking cases of scholarly and artistic (self-)archiving, which - although being half-isolated from the outer world - reflected intellectual and artistic trends characteristic of its time. The guiding question of the volume is how Soviet unofficial culture (de)constructed social memory by collecting, archiving and memorizing tabooed culture of the past and present.
![]() Free Download Juliet V. Spedding, "'to See a World in a Grain of Sand': Glass from Nubia and the Ancient Mediterranean" English | ISBN: 1803274492 | 2023 | 202 pages | PDF | 9 MB 'To See a World in a Grain of Sand' uses modern scientific methods to examine glass beads and vessel fragments dating from the Meroitic (c. 350 BC-AD 350) and Early Nobadia (c. AD 350-600) periods to provide a new assessment of glass from Nubia (ancient Sudan), a subject hitherto little-studied. The resulting identification of their chemical makeup is not simply about artefact reclassification but permits the tracking of similar compositions and-by extension-the raw materials for glass production that were used throughout Nubia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean. The results reveal interrelationships between trade, technological understanding, and manufacturing choices made across these cultures. Comparing glasses from Nubia with those from Egyptian and Mediterranean contexts has also shown how the same primary production centres were providing glass to sites in Turkey, Albania, Egypt, and Nubia. The identification of different glass groups and rare types of glass within Nubia shows the extent and variation to be found in a material that is present not only at a single site but also across the whole region, while the data presented reveals the diverse and complex nature of glass objects discovered there. That multiple interactions were being employed in glass manufacture shows how the examination of artefacts and their component materials must include consideration of both international trade and 'home-based' practices.
![]() Free Download Heidi Norman PhD, "'What Do We Want?': A Political History of Aboriginal Land Rights in New South Wales" English | 2015 | ISBN: 1922059900 | EPUB | pages: 288 | 0.6 mb The passage of land rights laws in New South Wales in 1983 saw political intrigue, deception, and disappointment as well as unprecedented engagement by Aboriginal citizens and their supporters. How could a sympathetic New South Wales State Government redress the effects of 200 years of colonization in the most densely populated state in the Commonwealth? The phrase "What do we want?" was the rallying call for land rights activists and Heidi Norman's insightful book begins in the late 1970s when Aboriginal people, armed with new skills, framed their land rights demands. The 1978 land rights inquiry and the laws that followed brought Aboriginal people-and the state-into new and different relationships of power. These have been the source of ongoing contestation ever since. For these Aboriginal people, the laws allowed an unparalleled level of involvement in government, and in governing as it opened up a host of possibilities. Thirty years later, with more than a billion dollars in land assets, a near billion-dollar investment fund, and with more than 115 local Aboriginal land councils, the resultant network of land councils is the largest Aboriginal representative body in the country. This work reveals the challenges of Aboriginal people adjusting to modernity as land councils struggle to fully realize the hopes of their members, many of whom continue to suffer chronic disadvantage. ![]() Free Download Mark Lipovetsky, "21: Russian Short Prose from the Odd Century " English | ISBN: 1644690551 | 2019 | 334 pages | PDF | 4 MB This collection of Russian short stories from the 21st century includes works by famous writers and young talents alike, representing a diversity of generational, gender, ethnic and national identities.
