![]() Free Download Andrew Goatly, "Explorations in Stylistics " English | ISBN: 1845539087 | 2010 | 243 pages | PDF | 3 MB This book explores some of the developments in Stylistics since its pioneer, Roman Jakobson, identified the patterning of the message as the poetic function. It analyses in turn Golding's Pincher Martin, Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, Housman's A Shropshire Lad, Elizabeth Jennings' poem 'One Flesh', Harold Pinter's The Birthday Party, Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day, and a range of poems by John Donne. The analyses show how Jakobson's emphasis on the message gives way to emphasis on the code or on undermining the code (in the Golding and Donne chapters), on the context (in the Rowling and Golding chapters), on the reader's response (in the Housman chapter), on the relationship between the addresser's and the addressee's shared assumptions and their use of pragmatic principles (in the Pinter and Ishiguro chapters). The pivotal Jennings' chapter shows how these different stylistic perspectives can be applied variously to the same text. This collection of essays will be especially useful for students of Stylistics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level as it illustrates the use of a range of analytical tools: Systemic Functional Grammar's analysis of transitivity and theme; pragmatic theories of co-operation, politeness, presupposition and inferencing; and conceptual metaphor theory. Additionally it demonstrates central stylistic concepts such as foregrounding, and how to analyse rhythmical, lexical, grammatical and semantic patterning. ![]() Free Download Silvia E. Queer materiality designates the queer latency of modern material culture, which often inspired queer artists and filmmakers to envision wayward bodies and behaviors, and refers to the way in which sexual and social dissidence was embedded in the objects, technologies, substances, and spaces that make up the hardware of experience.

Rome adopted different strategies: they oscillated between inclusion, warfare and other means of exerting influence. The contributions to this volume explore the archaeological evidence for Roman practice and especially the varying strategies of power and influence in the central regions on the one hand, and the south-eastern parts of the European 'Barbaricum' on the other. They show how 'Divide et impera' functioned as practical policy based on alliances, as well as consequent warfare, and diplomatic initiatives, which are traceable by prestige-goods and ![]() Free Download Avihu Zakai, "Exile and Kingdom: History and Apocalypse in the Puritan Migration to America " English | ISBN: 0521403812 | | 276 pages | PDF | 17 MB By analyzing the ideological origins of the Puritan migration to America, the author shows how Puritans believed that their removal to New England fulfilled prophetic apocalyptic and eschatological visions. Based on a close reading of Puritan texts, the book explains how Puritans interpreted their migration as a prophetic revelatory event in the context of a sacred, ecclesiastical history, and why they considered it as the climax of the history of salvation and redemption. ![]() Free Download Simon Devereaux, "Execution, State and Society in England, 1660-1900 " English | ISBN: 1009392158 | 2023 | 330 pages | DJVU | 4 MB This book provides the first comprehensive account of execution practices in England and their extraordinary transformation from 1660 to 1900. Agonizing execution rituals were once common. Male traitors were hanged, disembowelled while still alive, then decapitated and quartered. Female traitors were burned alive. And common criminals slowly choked to death beneath wooden crossbeams erected at the margins of towns. Some of their bodies were either left to rot on roadside gibbets or dissected by anatomy instructors. Two centuries later, only murderers and traitors were executed - both by hanging - and they died alone, usually quickly, and behind prison walls. In this major contribution to the history of crime and punishment in England, Simon Devereaux reveals how urban growth, and the unique public culture it produced, challenged and largely displaced those traditional elites who valued the old 'Bloody Code' as an instrument of their rule. ![]() Free Download Excel Data Analysis: Modeling and Simulation by Hector Guerrero English | PDF (True) | 2010 | 353 Pages | ISBN : 3642108342 | 15.3 MB Why does the World Need-Excel Data Analysis, Modeling, and Simulation? When spreadsheets ?rst became widely available in the early 1980s, it spawned a revolution in teaching. What previously could only be done with arcane software and large scale computing was now available to the common-man, on a desktop. Also, before spreadsheets, most substantial analytical work was done outside the classroom where the tools were; spreadsheets and personal computers moved the work into the classroom. Not only did it change how the analysis curriculum was taught, but it also empowered students to venture out on their own to explore new ways to use the tools. I can't tell you how many phone calls, of?ce visits, and/or emails I have received in my teaching career from ecstatic students crowing about what they have just done with a spreadsheet model. I have been teaching courses related to spreadsheet based analysis and modeling for about 25 years and I have watched and participated in the spreadsheet revolution.

The results demonstrate that there was sparse development of the canabae to the north of the fortress during the 1st and 2nd centuries; instead, this area was predominantly used for the extraction of building materials - sandstone and clay. By the 3rd century, the final phase of usage took the form of a small cemetery, the first to be examined in this area. Subject to more constraints, the sites investigated within the eastern canabae close to the fortress produced limited evidence for urban Description divisions, whilst those further east provided evidence for the division and management of agricultural land forming the |
