Normativity in Language and Linguistics
Free Download Aleksi Mäkilähde, "Normativity in Language and Linguistics "
English | ISBN: 9027203997 | 2019 | 280 pages | PDF | 3 MB
This volume sets out to discuss the role of norms and normativity in both language and linguistics from a multiplicity of perspectives. These concepts are centrally important to the philosophy and methodology of linguistics, and their role and nature need to be investigated in detail. The chapters address a range of issues from general questions about ontology, epistemology and methodology to aspects of particular subfields (such as semantics and historical linguistics) or phenomena (such as construal and code-switching). The volume aims to further our understanding of language and linguistics as well as to encourage further discussion on the metatheory of linguistics. Due to the fundamental nature of the issues under discussion, this volume will be of interest to all linguists regardless of their background or fields of expertise and to philosophers concerned with language or other normative domains.

Normative, Atypical or Deviant Interpreting Prehistoric and Protohistoric Child Burial Practices
Free Download Eileen Murphy, "Normative, Atypical or Deviant?: Interpreting Prehistoric and Protohistoric Child Burial Practices "
English | ISBN: 1803275111 | 2023 | 254 pages | PDF | 14 MB
Normative, Atypical or Deviant? Interpreting Prehistoric and Protohistoric Child Burial Practices, the tenth volume in the SSCIP monograph series, explores the response of the living when dealing with the death of a child. This response is strongly connected to belief systems and concern for the fate of the deceased in the afterlife. The funerary rituals for each culture generally follow a prescribed format that will both satisfy the needs of the dead and ensure there are no negative consequences for the living. But how do we interpret burials that do not adhere to the recognised formula for their society? Can we find evidence that such differences involved positive or, indeed, negative emotions? Should atypical rites for children actually be considered normal since they are typical for their age cohort, differing only from those of adults, and perhaps simply reflect adult-centric interpretations of the past? The papers within the volume discuss these issues by focusing on juvenile burial practices in Europe and the Near East during recent prehistory and protohistory. The interpretation of normative, atypical or deviant is interrogated based on the context of the burials and the intentionality of the practice.

Nora Ephron Everything Is Copy
Free Download Liz Dance, "Nora Ephron: Everything Is Copy"
English | ISBN: 0786496746 | 2015 | 196 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Nora Ephron famously claimed that she wrote about every thought that ever crossed her mind, from her divorce from Carl Bernstein (Heartburn) to the size of her breasts ("A Few Words About Breasts"). She also wrote screenplays for three of the most successful contemporary romantic comedies-When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and You've Got Mail (1998). Often considered mere light-hearted romantic comedies, her screenwriting has not been the subject of serious study. This book offers a sustained critical analysis of her work and life and demonstrates that Ephron is no lightweight. The complexity of her work is explored through the context of her childhood in a deeply dysfunctional family of writers.

Nonlinear Time Series Analysis of Economic and Financial Data
Free Download Nonlinear Time Series Analysis of Economic and Financial Data by Philip Rothman
English | PDF | 1999 | 378 Pages | ISBN : 0792383796 | 47.1 MB
Nonlinear Time Series Analysis of Economic and Financial Data provides an examination of the flourishing interest that has developed in this area over the past decade. The constant theme throughout this work is that standard linear time series tools leave unexamined and unexploited economically significant features in frequently used data sets. The book comprises original contributions written by specialists in the field, and offers a combination of both applied and methodological papers. It will be useful to both seasoned veterans of nonlinear time series analysis and those searching for an informative panoramic look at front-line developments in the area.

Nonlinear Optical Waves
Free Download Nonlinear Optical Waves by A. I. Maimistov , A. M. Basharov
English | PDF | 1999 | 668 Pages | ISBN : 0792357523 | 46.6 MB
A non-linear wave is one of the fundamental objects of nature. They are inherent to aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, solid state physics and plasma physics, optics and field theory, chemistry reaction kinetics and population dynamics, nuclear physics and gravity. All non-linear waves can be divided into two parts: dispersive waves and dissipative ones. The history of investigation of these waves has been lasting about two centuries. In 1834 J. S. Russell discovered the extraordinary type of waves without the dispersive broadening. In 1965 N. J. Zabusky and M. D. Kruskal found that the Korteweg-de Vries equation has solutions of the solitary wave form. This solitary wave demonstrates the particle-like properties, i. e. , stability under propagation and the elastic interaction under collision of the solitary waves. These waves were named solitons. In succeeding years there has been a great deal of progress in understanding of soliton nature. Now solitons have become the primary components in many important problems of nonlinear wave dynamics. It should be noted that non-linear optics is the field, where all soliton features are exhibited to a great extent. This book had been designed as the tutorial to the theory of non-linear waves in optics. The first version was projected as the book covering all the problems in this field, both analytical and numerical methods, and results as well. However, it became evident in the process of work that this was not a real task.

Non–covalent Interactions in Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry
Free Download Alexander S Novikov, "Non-covalent Interactions in Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry"
English | ISBN: 3036532889 | 2022 | 76 pages | PDF | 5 MB
Non-covalent interactions in coordination and organometallic compounds (hydrogen, halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen, tetrel, and semi-coordination bonds; agosic and anagosic interactions; stacking, anion-/cation-π interactions; metallophilic interactions, etc.) are topical in modern chemistry, materials science, crystal engineering, and related fields of knowledge. Both experimental and theoretical methods are widely used for investigations of the nature and various properties of such weak contacts in gas, liquid, and solid states. Non-covalent interactions could be the driving force to design smart materials with valuable redox, electronic, mechanical, magnetic, and optical properties, which is promising for the manufacture of LEDs, photovoltaic cells of solar power plants, porous structures, sensors, battery cells, and liquid crystals.

Non–Intrusive Methodologies for Large Area Urban Research
Free Download I. P. Haynes, "Non-Intrusive Methodologies for Large Area Urban Research"
English | ISBN: 1803274468 | 2023 | 119 pages | PDF | 26 MB
Non-Intrusive Methodologies for Large Area Urban Research brings together contributions from a conference held in 2021 in association with the ERC-funded 'Rome Transformed' research project. The papers address a major challenge in archaeology. Non-intrusive research in pursuit of a deeper understanding of urban areas can be both richly informative and cost-effective. Multiple successes in the field have led to an impressive array of innovative methodologies, methodologies that are frequently combined for still greater insight and impact. Geophysical surveys, the use of UAVs, the study of exposed historic structures and the exhaustive examination of archival records can all play a vital role, and the development of these data capture methodologies is of the utmost importance for the future of research. As well as advances in data capture methodologies, however, the papers also present case studies in the management of the big data generated and in the integration of different methodologies. A further strength of this collection lies in the range of site types considered. While many projects have historically pursued non-intrusive research in areas relatively clear of modern buildings, a growing number of research initiatives, such as 'Rome Transformed' are seeking to advance them in areas which remain densely occupied. Accordingly the material presented here will also be of interest to non-archaeologists working in such diverse fields as civil engineering, urban planning and physical geography.
