Free Download Reiko Yoshihara, "The Socially Responsible Feminist EFL Classroom: A Japanese Perspective on Identities, Beliefs and Practices (New Perspe"
English | ISBN: 1783098015 | 2017 | 160 pages | PDF | 1123 KB
This book explores the realities of feminist EFL teachers' lives through interviews and classroom observations with eight EFL teachers at Japanese universities. The data contained in the book broaden our understanding of feminist teaching in the language classroom while also providing suggestions for practice. The book examines not only how the teachers' feminist identities influence their pedagogical beliefs and practices but also how the teachers actually practice feminist teaching in their classrooms. The tensions, dilemmas and pleasures of feminist teaching converge in this book, which attempts to shed light on a question that is often asked in either ESL or EFL teaching contexts: is teaching about gender-related topics (including controversial sociopolitical topics) in the language classroom education or indoctrination?

The Skyband Group, Copán Honduras Penn State Excavations 1990, 1997
Free Download David Webster, "The Skyband Group, Copán Honduras: Penn State Excavations 1990, 1997 "
English | ISBN: 1803274298 | 2023 | 336 pages | PDF | 33 MB
The Skyband Group is an impressive elite site in the urban core of Copan, Honduras, which is dominated by the palatial compounds of Maya sub-royal nobles. Such grandees often bore court titles showing that they were clients and officials of kings, but also competitors for political power, especially just before the dynastic collapse around AD 800. Penn State University excavations in 1990 and 1997 revealed large vaulted buildings, richly embellished with facade sculpture, and an elaborate carved throne in the form of a sky band, replete with celestial images of the sun, moon, and Venus. Artifacts and burials retrieved from these buildings and smaller ancillary structures are characteristic of elite residences, but the iconography of the facades and the throne also reveals connections with Copan's royal dynasty and efforts by the last ruler to shore up his faltering kingdom. Activity at the Skyband Group and other sites in the Copan valley continued after the abrupt political debacle, an example of the 'slow collapse' process that is increasingly evident among the great Maya centers in the southern lowlands of Mesoamerica.

The Shia Identity. Persecution. Horizons
Free Download Elvana Hammoud, Dr. Hassan Abbas, "The Shia: Identity. Persecution. Horizons."
English | 2015 | ISBN: 0692390294, 1943393990 | PDF | pages: 224 | 6.1 mb
"As the world grapples with religious extremism and consequent violence in the world of Islam, Sayyid Riyadh Al-Hakeem provides us a valuable opportunity to understand the political dynamics and theological debates within Islam. I had the privilege to have a long conversation with Sayyid in 2014 in Najaf focusing on the developments in the Muslim world. I was struck by his scholarly demeanor, thoughtful approach and creative thinking geared towards peaceful resolutions to the challenges faced by humanity today. The Shia: Identity. Persecution. Horizons. is a penetrating historical account about Shia Muslims, enlightening us about their genesis, their struggles and most importantly their contribution to the Islamic faith."Unlike many similar efforts, this book is not a chronicle of Shia-Sunni rivalries. The book is more focused on what the author believes to be the essence and spirit of Islam. He intelligently differentiates between issues that are linked to Muslim identity and others that are more profound in terms of foundations of faith. Sayyid Al-Hakeem, an accomplished scholar and jurist, is not only well qualified to teach us about this subject but his access to the corridors of learning and education in the Holy City of Najaf makes him among the ideal people to undertake this task."This poignant and well-timed analysis of the Muslim dynamics brings great clarity to the complex series of events shaping the Muslim world today. It is a must read for both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences who are interested in understanding a Shia perspective that is written with an objective to pursue inter-religious harmony and peaceful coexistence, encourage tolerance and defeat sectarian agendas."- Dr. Hassan Abbas, author of The Taliban Revival

The Separation of Early Christianity from Judaism
Free Download Marianne Dacy, "The Separation of Early Christianity from Judaism"
English | ISBN: 1604977000 | 2010 | 374 pages | PDF | 3 MB
There exists a plethora of literature on the relationship between early Christianity and Judaism, but these studies focus on one or two issues. In the tradition of James Parkes, whose 1930 study of the break between the Church and the Synagogue remains a classic, this book takes on the larger relationship and shows how the separation evolved over time. Rather than pinpointing a specific date for the break, the study broadens the context and looks at the wider issues, showing that separation took several centuries. In the wake of the Holocaust and in seeking to understand how the relationship between Judaism and Christianity deteriorated over the course of two millennia, this book examines the origins of the conflict. In seeking to cast new light on the separation of early Christianity from Judaism, a number of documented areas that are often treated separately by authors have been examined in order to uncover evidence for the separation. This book covers an enormous amount of material on the relationship between early Christianity and Judaism, but presents this in a highly accessible manner, clearly showing how the separation between the two emerged over time. It also reveals the ways they continued to be related. The author pinpoints two pervasive issues that impelled the separation: the relationship of the early church to Jewish law and the increasing divinization of Jesus. The Separation of Early Christianity from Judaism is essential for the shelves of academic institutions and public libraries, and it will also be a helpful supplement to the libraries both of scholars and Christian and Jewish religious leaders.

The Sentient Tree in Speculative Fiction
Free Download Jean Graham, "The Sentient Tree in Speculative Fiction"
English | ISBN: 3031605403 | 2024 | 161 pages | EPUB | 455 KB
This book interrogates the theme of vegetal sentience and consciousness in the form of trees that move purposefully and/or speak, a theme which appears in everything from classical mythology to tTwentieth -century and contemporary literature, which draws on this earlier work. Graham's research includes literary and scientific works on vegetal consciousness and sentience, and applies this ecocritical lens in her analysis of various works of literature, television, and film. This book aims to illustrate how sentient trees in speculative fiction help readers better understand that other beings on Earth and/or the Universe are motivated and able to act on goals and desires, even when those goals may not coincide with those of humans.
