Free Download John Baines, "The Disappearance of Writing Systems: Perspectives on Literacy and Communication" English | ISBN: 1845530136 | 2008 | 384 pages | PDF | 42 MB This volume gathers papers from the first conference ever to be held on the disappearance of writing systems, in Oxford in March 2004. While the invention and decipherment of writing systems have long been focuses of research, their eclipse or replacement have been little studied. Because writing is so important in many cultures and civilizations, its disappearance - followed by a period without it or by replacement by a different writing system - is of almost equal significance to invention as a mark of radical change. Probably more writing systems have disappeared than survived in the last five thousand years.Case studies from the Old and New Worlds are presented, ranging over periods from the first millennium BC to the present. In order to address many types of transmission, the broadest possible definition of 'writing' is used, notably including Mexican pictography and the Andean khipu system. One chapter discusses the larger proportion of known human societies that have not possessed complex material codes like writing, offering an alternative perspective on the long-term transmission of socially salient subjects. A concluding essay draws out common themes and offers an initial synthesis of results. The volume offers a new perspective on approaches to writing that will be significant for the understanding of writing systems and their social functions, literacy, memory, and high-cultural communication systems in general. Free Download Rosemarie Mulcahy, "The Decoration of the Royal Basilica of El Escorial" English | ISBN: 0521413443 | | 276 pages | PDF | 21 MB The Decoration of the Royal Basilica of El Escorial examines one of the most important creative endeavours of late sixteenth-century Spain, and indeed, Europe as a whole. Conceived as a mausoleum for the Spanish Habsburgs, designed as both monastery and palace, the Escorial was closely supervised by King Philip II, who wished it to exemplify the spirit of the Counter-Reformation through observance of new decrees relating to church ritual and religious imagery. The basilica itself was the spiritual centre of this royal foundation and the body of art works commissioned by Philip II for it was unique in volume, scale and coherence. On the basis of the extensive documentation related to this unusual structure, Rosemarie Mulcahy provides the first thorough reconstruction of the king's grand design of the basilica, whose altarpieces, murals and sculptures form a seamless iconographic programme. Among the artists whose works are found in the basilica are such Italians as Cambiaso, Zuccaro and Pellegrino Tibaldi; and the Spaniards Navarrete 'el Mudo', Alonso Sánchez Coello and Diego de Urbina. Challenging some of the current views that argue for a definable Counter-Reformation style, The Decoration of The Royal Basilica of El Escorial also raises important questions regarding Philip II's patronage practices, particularly his requirements for religious art and the extent to which they were met by artists. Free Download Katia Margariti, "The Death of the Maiden in Classical Athens" English | ISBN: 1784915467 | 2017 | 700 pages | PDF | 53 MB The present study examines the death of maidens in classical Athens, combining the study of Attic funerary iconography with research on classical Attic maiden burials, funerary inscriptions, tragic plays, as well as the relevant Attic myths. The iconography of funerary reliefs focuses on the idealized image of the deceased maiden, as well as the powerful bonds of love and kinship that unite her with the members of her family, whereas the iconography of vases emphasizes the premature death of the maiden, the pain of loss and mourning felt by her family, as well as the observance of the indispensable funerary rites concerning her burial and 'tomb cult'. Particularly interesting is the fact that the 'traditional' theory according to which the loutrophoros marked the graves of the unmarried dead alone has been proven non valid. The study of classical Attic maiden burials indicates that the prematurely dead maidens were buried as children who didn't live long enough to reach adulthood. The untimely death of maidens in Attic drama and mythology is beneficial to the family or the city. In great contrast to that, the premature death of real - life Athenian maidens was a terrible disaster for the girls' families, as well as the polis itself. Despite this, the iconography of dead maidens in classical Athens is in accordance with the 'image' of the deceased maidens presented by funerary epigrams, tragedy, and mythology. It has to be noted though, that the same is not true in the case of maiden burials. This Access Archaeology publication presents a special edition of Katia Margariti's doctoral thesis entitled The Death of the Maiden in Classical Athens. The original thesis was submitted to the Department of History, Archaeology, and Social Anthropology (IAKA) of the University of Thessaly in Volos in 2010. Here the original thesis is augmented by an extensive 63 page summary in English accompanied by the original Greek text, catalogue and illustrations. The thesis contains much valuable analysis and catalogue material and this publication has been produced in order that the work should not be overlooked merely for reasons of language. (Isaiah 40:3). Papers use the wilderness rubric to address the self-identification of the Qumran group; dimensions of religious experience reflected in the Dead Sea writings; biblical interpretation as shaper and conveyor of that experience; the significance of the Qumran texts for critical biblical scholarship; points of contact with the early Jesus movement; and new developments in understanding the archaeology of the Qumran caves. The volume both honors past insights and charts new paths for the future of Qumran studies. |
