The Huns (Peoples of the Ancient World)
Free Download The Huns (Peoples of the Ancient World) by Hyun Jin Kim
English | November 23, 2015 | ISBN: 1138841757 | 208 pages | MOBI | 1.68 Mb
This volume is a concise introduction to the history and culture of the Huns. This ancient people had a famous reputation in Eurasian Late Antiquity. However, their history has often been evaluated as a footnote in the histories of the later Roman Empire and early Germanic peoples. Kim addresses this imbalance and challenges the commonly held assumption that the Huns were a savage people who contributed little to world history, examining striking geopolitical changes brought about by the Hunnic expansion over much of continental Eurasia and revealing the Huns' contribution to European, Iranian, Chinese and Indian civilization and statecraft. By examining Hunnic culture as a Eurasian whole, The Huns provides a full picture of their society which demonstrates that this was a complex group with a wide variety of ethnic and linguistic identities. Making available critical information from both primary and secondary sources regarding the Huns' Inner Asian origins, which would otherwise be largely unavailable to most English speaking students and Classical scholars, this is a crucial tool for those interested in the study of Eurasian Late Antiquity.

The Heroic Age The Creation of Quantum Mechanics, 1925–1940
Free Download The Heroic Age: The Creation of Quantum Mechanics, 1925-1940 by Robert D. Purrington
English | February 19, 2018 | ISBN: 0190655178 | 424 pages | MOBI | 8.76 Mb
Quantum theory is one of the great achievements of twentieth century physics. Born at the very beginning of the century, it attained a definitive form by 1932, yet continued to evolve throughout the century. Its applications remain fully a part of modern life. It should thus come as no surprise that literature on the history of quantum theory is vast, but author Robert D. Purrington approaches the story from a new angle, by examining the original physics papers and scientific studies from before the creation of quantum mechanics to how scientists think about and discuss the subject today.

The Hebridean World
Free Download The Hebridean World: Its Human Ecology Through Time
English | 2024 | ISBN: 3031708709 | 285 Pages | PDF (True) | 40 MB
The Hebrides has long been seen as an area that, when considered over time, was slow to absorb change. Indeed, from the nineteenth century onwards, it attracted the attention of scholars for being seen as having not just the oldest rocks in Europe but also, some of its oldest cultural practices and institutional forms. This unchanging 'archaic' character has continued to attract a great deal of research but, over recent decades, a counter view has emerged that highlights the changes that the region did experience. This book argues the case for the latter by drawing out how the institutional forms around which the region and its farming communities were organised changed over time. As background. It highlights the importance of understanding two key inter-related features that underpinned these changes: the low output of Hebridean farming with its high frequency of poor harvests and the range of environmental hazards that beset the region. Brought together, the interaction between these two features makes the survival strategies adopted by communities an important part of the region's history. Because society/environment interactions are at the heart of the problem, the book's discussion is presented as a study in human ecology. One of the benchmark studies of the region in modern times, or Sir Fraser Darling's The West Highland Problem: A Study in Human Ecology (OUP, 1955) adopted such an approach. This book gives this human ecological perspective on the region a greater time-depth. In addition to a Preface and an Epilogue, it is divided into 12 chapters: Title: The Hebridean World: Its Ecological History Through Time Preface 1: The Hebrides: Their Physical Endowment and Its Challenges 2: The Oldest Cultural Landscapes 3: The Hebridean Mix: Picts, Scots and Vikings 4: How Land was Occupied Before Crofting 5: How the Land was Farmed before Crofting 6: Landscapes of Summer: the Shielings 7: The Inter Tidal and Beyond: the Harvest of Shore and Sea 8:Survival on the Margins 9: The Landscapes of Crofting 10: The Harvesting and Processing of Grain 11: The Clearances for Sheep and Deer 12: Hebridean Housing and Settlement Epilogue

The Harvey House Cookbook Memories of Dining Along the Santa Fe Railroad
Free Download The Harvey House Cookbook: Memories of Dining Along the Santa Fe Railroad by George H. Foster, Peter C. Weiglin
English | March 10, 2006 | ISBN: 9781589793217 | 208 pages | PDF | 5.95 Mb
In the 1870s, people traveling west of the Mississippi were still venturing into the wild. Loud, smoke-belching trains might have cut across the rough terrain, but harsh weather, rigid seats, and short breaks for bad food in the middle of nowhere showed the West was by no means won. Entrepreneur Fred Harvey had an eye for such problems and a nerve for the impossible. In 1876, he began establishing high-quality dining rooms along the Santa Fe Railroad, and his Harvey Houses helped change the entire picture of the American West.
