More Than Just Peloteros Sport and U.S. Latino Communities
Free Download Jorge Iber, "More Than Just Peloteros: Sport and U.S. Latino Communities "
English | ISBN: 0896729079 | 2015 | 320 pages | PDF | 32 MB
Although the Latino/a population of the United States has exploded since the 1960s, an analysis of its place in the history of American sport has, until recently, been sorely underrepresented. The thoughtful and coherent essays in More Than Just Peloteros demonstrate that participation in sport and recreation develops identity and involvement in the lives of Spanish-speaking people throughout what is now the United States. The articles feature accounts of eras and events as varied as the Latino experience itself, including horse racing in colonial San Antonio, boxing in New York City, baseball in the barrios of 1930s Chicago, basketball in a 1950s Arizona mining town, and, of course, high school football in South Texas. As the nation's demographics continue to change, more and more Latinos/as will, undoubtedly, leave their marks on the fields of athletic competition at levels ranging from the local to the professional, the business offices of franchises and colleges, and as general consumers of American sporting events and goods. This volume recognizes and encourages the role that sport and recreation play in the day-to-day existence of Spanish speakers in the United States.

Moral Injury A Guidebook for Understanding and Engagement
Free Download Brad E. Kelle Point Loma Nazarene Unive, "Moral Injury: A Guidebook for Understanding and Engagement"
English | ISBN: 1793606870 | 2021 | 232 pages | PDF | 1205 KB
Moral injury has developed in earnest since 2009 within psychology and military studies, especially through work with veterans of the U.S. military's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. A major part of this work is the attempt to identify means of healing, recovery, and repair for those morally injured by their experiences in combat (or similar situations). What this volume does is to provide insight into the identification of moral injury, the development of the notion, attempts to work with those affected, emerging ideas about moral injury, portraits of moral injury in the past and present, and, especially, what creative engagement with moral injury might look like from a variety of perspectives. As such, it will be an important resource for Christian ministers, chaplains, health care workers, and other providers and caregivers who serve afflicted communities.

Montages Assembling as a Form and Symptom in Contemporary Arts
Free Download Cristina Baldacci, "Montages: Assembling as a Form and Symptom in Contemporary Arts "
English | ISBN: 8869771024 | 2018 | 250 pages | EPUB | 4 MB
Montage, today, is a widespread procedure that doesn't concern just artistic production, but also our daily lives and the use everyone makes of that huge visual archive contemporary media places at our disposal. In a technologically advanced society, where the notion of postproduction regulates our relationship with images and objects, it is therefore necessary to thoroughly investigate the role, possibilities, and, most of all, anthropological and politic connotations of montage; and to ask ourselves whether - in comparison to the heroic years of the first avant-gardes - montage has become a faded and standardized practice or if it is a more and more effective means to understand and reprogram the world, especially in relation to the technical possibilities offered by new media and remix practices.

Monkeys, Apes, and Humans Primatology in Japan
Free Download Monkeys, Apes, and Humans: Primatology in Japan By Michael A. Huffman, Naofumi Nakagawa, Yasuhiro Go, Hiroo Imai, Masaki Tomonaga (auth.)
2013 | 52 Pages | ISBN: 4431541527 | PDF | 2 MB
This book introduces to the reader unfamiliar with primatology in Japan three research projects representative of the unique multidisciplinary approach carried out by scientists at Kyoto University, the country's premier institution for primate studies. The projects are all aimed at understanding the age-old questions, where did we come from, and what makes us unique or similar to our primate ancestors? The first chapter, by Naofumi Nakagawa, focuses on the cultural diversity of social behavior in the Japanese macaque. This chapter reviews research on primate culture, in particular the work on Japanese macaques, then presents what is arguably the first example of a culturally transmitted social convention in the species, called "hug-hug". The second chapter, by Michael A. Huffman, introduces our current knowledge of self-medication in primates, based largely on a long-term study of wild chimpanzees at Kyoto University's longest ongoing chimpanzee field in Africa, Mahale, in Tanzania. The suite of behavioral adaptations to parasite infections in chimpanzees is compared with our current knowledge of self-medication in other primates and other animal species. The third chapter, by Yasuhiro Go, Hiroo Imai, and Masaki Tomonaga, describes the ambitious efforts to combine cognitive science and genomics into a new discipline called "comparative cognitive genomics". This chapter provides an overview of recent advancements in chimpanzee comparative cognition, the construction of a chimpanzee genomic database, and comparative genomic studies at the individual level, looking into factors affecting personality and individuality.
