Comparative Physiology of Fasting, Starvation, and Food Limitation
Free Download Comparative Physiology of Fasting, Starvation, and Food Limitation By Marshall D. McCue (auth.), Marshall D. McCue (eds.)
2012 | 430 Pages | ISBN: 3642290558 | PDF | 7 MB
All animals face the possibility of food limitation and ultimately starvation-induced mortality. This book summarizes state of the art of starvation biology from the ecological causes of food limitation to the physiological and evolutionary consequences of prolonged fasting. It is written for an audience with an understanding of general principles in animal physiology, yet offers a level of analysis and interpretation that will engage seasoned scientists. Each chapter is written by active researchers in the field of comparative physiology and draws on the primary literature of starvation both in nature and the laboratory. The chapters are organized among broad taxonomic categories, such as protists, arthropods, fishes, reptiles, birds, and flying, aquatic, and terrestrial mammals including humans; particularly well-studied animal models, e.g. endotherms are further organized by experimental approaches, such as analyses of blood metabolites, stable isotopes, thermobiology, and modeling of body composition.

Comparative Genomics
Free Download Comparative Genomics By Xuhua Xia (auth.)
2013 | 68 Pages | ISBN: 3642371450 | PDF | 2 MB
This book provides an evolutionary conceptual framework for comparative genomics, with the ultimate objective of understanding the loss and gain of genes during evolution, the interactions among gene products, and the relationship between genotype, phenotype and the environment. The many examples in the book have been carefully chosen from primary research literature based on two criteria: their biological insight and their pedagogical merit. The phylogeny-based comparative methods, involving both continuous and discrete variables, often represent a stumbling block for many students entering the field of comparative genomics. They are numerically illustrated and explained in great detail. The book is intended for researchers new to the field, i.e., advanced undergraduate students, postgraduates and postdoctoral fellows, although professional researchers who are not in the area of comparative genomics will also find the book informative.

Community Archaeology Working Ancient Aboriginal Wetlands in Eastern Australia
Free Download Wendy Beck, "Community Archaeology: Working Ancient Aboriginal Wetlands in Eastern Australia "
English | ISBN: 1789694809 | 2023 | 430 pages | PDF | 37 MB
Community Archaeology presents the results of an investigation of wetland heritage in eastern Australia, with important contributions to the archaeology of the Tasmanian Midlands and the New England Tablelands. In this first substantial project in these bioregions since 1991, OSL and radiocarbon dating at lagoon sites provided dates going back to 8000 BP, significantly extending previous information. In both regions a range of stone artefact scatters were recorded adjacent to lagoons, suggesting associated ceremonial activities. Across the regions, new OSL dates were obtained for lunette formation. These were unexpectedly diverse, with OSL dates not clustered around the Last Glacial Maximum at 20k. With sediment particle sizes suggesting both wind and water deposition, quite individual local lunette depositional histories not closely related to global climates are indicated. The book also contributes to the important global field of community engagement and education. Unlike most projects where Aboriginal people are involved in commercial archaeology, this project focussed on research. Community Elders were research team partners during fieldwork and training. Work-integrated -learning, at University and on-country locations, proved very successful as a learning approach for young participants.

Communication that Counts Language Practice and Ideology in Globalized Accounting
Free Download Pia Patricia P. Tenedero, "Communication that Counts: Language Practice and Ideology in Globalized Accounting "
English | ISBN: 1800416474 | 2022 | 160 pages | PDF | 1085 KB
To date, communication research in accounting has largely focused on the competencies that define what constitutes 'effective communication'. Highly perception-based, skills-focused and Global North-centric, existing research tends to echo the skills deficit discourse which overemphasizes the role of the higher education system in developing students' work-relevant communication skills. This book investigates dominant views about communication and interrogates what shapes these views in the accounting field from a Global South perspective, exploring the idea of 'good communication' in the globalized accounting field. Taking the occupational stereotype of shy employees who are good with numbers but bad with words as its starting point, this book examines language and communication practices and ideologies in accounting education and work in the Philippines. As an emerging global leader in offshore accounting, the Philippines is an ideal context for an exploration of multilingual, multimodal and transnational workplace communication.

Free Download Chris Heginbotham, "Commissioning Health and Wellbeing"
English | ISBN: 144625254X | 2013 | 216 pages | EPUB | 6 MB
This new text supports commissioners in translating current aspirations for public mental and physical health into tangible commissioning strategies. At a time when there are major changes in commissioning arrangements, this book provides a carefully structured and comprehensive look at the resources designed to improve population health and wellbeing outcomes. It examines critically how these resources, both human and financial, can be used in practice, focusing on health and wellbeing as well as illness. The book takes a life-course approach and examines commissioning for children, working-age adults and older people.

Combinatorial Pattern Matching 22nd Annual Symposium, CPM 2011, Palermo, Italy, June 27–29, 2011. Proceedings
Free Download Combinatorial Pattern Matching: 22nd Annual Symposium, CPM 2011, Palermo, Italy, June 27-29, 2011. Proceedings By Gad M. Landau (auth.), Raffaele Giancarlo, Giovanni Manzini (eds.)
2011 | 480 Pages | ISBN: 3642214576 | PDF | 6 MB
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching, CPM 2011, held in Palermi, Italy, in June 2011. The 36 revised full papers presented together with 3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. The papers address issues of searching and matching strings and more complicated patterns such as trees, regular expressions, graphs, point sets, and arrays. The goal is to derive non-trivial combinatorial properties of such structures and to exploit these properties in order to either achieve superior performance for the corresponding computational problems or pinpoint conditions under which searches cannot be performed efficiently. The meeting also deals with problems in computational biology, data compression and data mining, coding, information retrieval, natural language processing and pattern recognition.

Combating Desertification in Asia, Africa and the Middle East Proven practices
Free Download Combating Desertification in Asia, Africa and the Middle East: Proven practices By G. Ali Heshmati, Victor R. Squires (auth.), G. Ali Heshmati, Victor R. Squires (eds.)
2013 | 476 Pages | ISBN: 9400766513 | PDF | 13 MB
This book is about the 'how' of desertification control as opposed to an analysis of the 'why' and fills a gap in the desertification-related literature in that it shows what to do in situations ranging from fixing mobile sands to arresting accelerated soil erosion in sloping lands. There are numerous illustrations to show the successful techniques. This compilation demonstrates that desertification and land degradation can be controlled and reversed with existing techniques in such widely varying environments as the Sahel of Africa to Sri Lanka and the Philippines in SE Asia, from mountains in Lesotho to low lands on desert margins in Mongolia. Proven approaches include technical interventions, changes in governance and to the legislative framework and policy reform. The book fills a gap in the desertification-related literature in that it shows what to do in situations ranging from fixing mobile sands to arresting accelerated soil erosion in sloping lands.
