Cell Death Signaling in Cancer Biology and Treatment
Free Download Cell Death Signaling in Cancer Biology and Treatment By Daniel E. Johnson (auth.), Daniel E. Johnson (eds.)
2013 | 408 Pages | ISBN: 1461458463 | PDF | 6 MB
A key goal in the treatment of cancer is to achieve selective and efficient killing of tumor cells. The aim of Cell Death Signaling in Cancer Biology and Treatment is to describe state-of-the-art approaches and future opportunities for achieving this goal by targeting mechanisms and pathways that regulate cancer cell death. In this book, molecular defects in cell death signaling that characterize cancer cells, including dysregulation of cell death due to overexpression/hyperactivation of oncoproteins, as well as the loss of tumor suppressor proteins will be described. The potential for targeting microRNAs will be discussed. Multiple chapters will describe preclinical and clinical approaches that are currently being used to target epigenetic modifications, DNA repair pathways, and protein chaperones, as a means of provoking tumor cell death. Finally, the development and application of novel agents and approaches for targeting specific components of cell death signaling pathways and machinery will be reviewed.

Free Download Paolo Babbiotti, "Cavell, Williams and the Question of Style in Philosophy"
English | ISBN: 3031651189 | 2024 | 304 pages | EPUB | 830 KB
This book considers the work of two philosophers situated within the anglo-american analytical tradition, Stanley Cavell (1926-2018) and Bernard Williams (1929-2003). It examines the literary strategies that these stylistically-aware authors employ and also the ethical demand which guides their philosophies and gives substance to their philosophical styles. The book thereby aims to demonstrate the importance of style in philosophy and suggest some of the intellectual dynamics a philosopher's conscious awareness of style can create.

In most academic and non-academic circles throughout history, the world and its operation have been viewed in terms of cause and effect. The principles of causation have been applied, fruitfully, across the sciences, law, medicine, and in everyday life, despite the lack of any agreed-upon framework for understanding what causation ultimately amounts to.

Catastrophe Insurance Consumer Demand, Markets and Regulation
Free Download Catastrophe Insurance: Consumer Demand, Markets and Regulation By Martin F. Grace, Robert W. Klein, Paul R. Kleindorfer, Michael R. Murray (auth.)
2003 | 147 Pages | ISBN: 1461348676 | PDF | 5 MB
1. THE PROBLEM OF CATASTROPHE RISK The risk of large losses from natural disasters in the U.S. has significantly increased in recent years, straining private insurance markets and creating troublesome problems for disaster-prone areas. The threat of mega-catastrophes resulting from intense hurricanes or earthquakes striking major population centers has dramatically altered the insurance environment. Estimates of probable maximum losses (PMLs) to insurers from a mega catastrophe striking the U.S. range up to $100 billion depending on the location and intensity of the event (Applied Insurance Research, 2001).1 A severe disaster could have a significant financial impact on the industry (Cummins, Doherty, and Lo, 2002; Insurance Services Office, 1996a). Estimates of industry gross losses from the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 range from $30 billion to $50 billion, and the attack's effect on insurance markets underscores the need to understand the dynamics of the supply of and the demand for insurance against extreme events, including natural disasters. Increased catastrophe risk poses difficult challenges for insurers, reinsurers, property owners and public officials (Kleindorfer and Kunreuther, 1999). The fundamental dilemma concerns insurers' ability to handle low-probability, high-consequence (LPHC) events, which generates a host of interrelated issues with respect to how the risk of such events are 1 These probable maximum loss (PML) estimates are based on a SOD-year "return" period.
