Current Research in Sports Sciences An International Perspective
Free Download Current Research in Sports Sciences: An International Perspective By V. K. Balsevich (auth.), Victor A. Rogozkin, Ron Maughan (eds.)
1996 | 346 Pages | ISBN: 1441932550 | PDF | 11 MB
There are two main reasons for pursuing research in the Sports Sciences. Firstly, by studying responses to exercise, we learn about the normal function of the tissues and or gans whose function allows exercise to be performed. The genetic endowment of elite ath letes is a major factor in their success, and they represent one end of the continuum of human performance capability: the study of elite athletes also demonstrates the limits of human adaptation because nowhere else is the body subjected to such levels of intensive exercise on a regular basis. The second reason for studying Sports Science is the intrinsic interest and value of the subject itself. Elite performers set levels to which others can as pire, but even among spectators, sport is an important part oflife and society. of top sport and elite performers, there is also another reason Apart from the study for medical and scientific interest in sport. There is no longer any doubt that lack ofphysi cal activity is a major risk factor for many of the diseases that affect people in all coun tries: such diseases include coronary heart disease, obesity, hypertension, and diabetes. An increased level of recreational physical activity is now an accepted part of the prescription for treatment and prevention of many illnesses, including those with psychological as well as physical causes. An understanding of the normal response to exercise, as well as of the role of exercise in disease prevention, is therefore vital.

Current Research in Operational Quantum Logic Algebras, Categories, Languages
Free Download Current Research in Operational Quantum Logic: Algebras, Categories, Languages By Bob Coecke, David Moore, Alexander Wilce (auth.), Bob Coecke, David Moore, Alexander Wilce (eds.)
2000 | 325 Pages | ISBN: 9048154375 | PDF | 12 MB
The present volume has its origins in a pair of informal workshops held at the Free University of Brussels, in June of 1998 and May of 1999, named "Current Research 1 in Operational Quantum Logic". These brought together mathematicians and physicists working in operational quantum logic and related areas, as well as a number of interested philosophers of science, for a rare opportunity to discuss recent developments in this field. After some discussion, it was decided that, rather than producing a volume of conference proceedings, we would try to organize the conferees to produce a set of comprehensive survey papers, which would not only report on recent developments in quantum logic, but also provide a tutorial overview of the subject suitable for an interested non-specialist audience. The resulting volume provides an overview of the concepts and methods used in current research in quantum logic, viewed both as a branch of mathemati cal physics and as an area of pure mathematics. The first half of the book is concerned with the algebraic side of the subject, and in particular the theory of orthomodular lattices and posets, effect algebras, etc. In the second half of the book, special attention is given to categorical methods and to connections with theoretical computer science. At the 1999 workshop, we were fortunate to hear three excellent lectures by David J. Foulis, represented here by two contributions. Dave's work, spanning 40 years, has helped to define, and continues to reshape, the field of quantum logic.

Current Ornithology
Free Download Current Ornithology By Les D. Beletsky, David F. Gori, Scott Freeman, John C. Wingfield (auth.), Dennis M. Power (eds.)
1995 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 1461357438 | PDF | 6 MB
In Volume 12, eminent international ornithologists further elucidate endocrinological correlates of mating strategies and hormones and reproductive behavior; assess the value of the ''brood reduction hypothesis'' in explaining ''the paradox of hatching asynchrony''; and explore the validity and sensitivity of growth bands in feathers as an indication of nutritional condition and the use of feather banding in studying growth. Chapters are well supported with charts, maps, schematic diagrams, and photographs. Current Ornithology is the only English-language publication currently devoted exclusively to extensive reviews and synthesis of topics pertaining to all aspects of the biology of birds. Chapters fall under such diverse rubrics as ecology, evolution, behavior, phylogeny, behavioral ecology, anatomy and physiology, and conservation biology. All authors are leading authorities on their subjects, and each chapter is refereed by experts in the topics covered. Although all chapters focus primarily on birds, some topics, such as the social cognition of birds as compared to primates (Volume 13), have significant application to disciplines outside of ornithology. Current Ornithology aims to provide an accessible, up-to-date, accurate source of data and to contribute to conceptual generalization and unification across the biological sciences.

Cultural Heritage as a Legal Hybrid Between Public and Private Law
Free Download Alicja Jagielska-Burduk, "Cultural Heritage as a Legal Hybrid: Between Public and Private Law"
English | 2022 | ISBN: 3031049454, 3031049489 | PDF | pages: 347 | 4.3 mb
This book examines cultural heritage law in both its public and private modalities, focusing on the search for new solutions in national legislations. Both tangible and intangible cultural heritage pose challenges for national legislation regarding the legal histories of the respective countries, obligations deriving from international law, and the independence of respective national searches for a tailored protection model. Although the concept of cultural heritage transcends civil law regulation and property rights, it must be considered when attempting to establish any coherent cultural heritage protection system. In national legislation, we can now observe an increased interest in leveraging civil law or private law to strengthen cultural heritage protection systems. This book looks beyond public and private law on cultural heritage in order to address its complex status as a legal hybrid.

Cultivating Arctic Landscapes Knowing and Managing Animals in the Circumpolar North
Free Download David G. Anderson, "Cultivating Arctic Landscapes: Knowing and Managing Animals in the Circumpolar North"
English | ISBN: 1571815740 | 2004 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
In the last two decades, there has been an increased awareness of the traditions and issues that link aboriginal people across the circumpolar North. One of the key aspects of the lives of circumpolar peoples, be they in Scandinavia, Alaska, Russia, or Canada, is their relationship to the wild animals that support them. Although divided for most of the 20th Century by various national trading blocks, and the Cold War, aboriginal people in each region share common stories about the various capitalist and socialist states that claimed control over their lands and animals. Now, aboriginal peoples throughout the region are reclaiming their rights.

Crossing Histories and Ethnographies Following Colonial Historicities in Timor–Leste
Free Download Ricardo Roque, "Crossing Histories and Ethnographies: Following Colonial Historicities in Timor-Leste "
English | ISBN: 178920271X | 2019 | 372 pages | PDF | 3 MB
The key question for many anthropologists and historians today is not whether to cross the boundary between their disciplines, but whether the idea of a disciplinary boundary should be sustained. Reinterpreting the dynamic interplay between archive and field, these essays propose a method for mutually productive crossings between historical and ethnographic research. It engages critically with the colonial pasts of indigenous societies and examines how fieldwork and archival studies together lead to fruitful insights into the making of different colonial historicities. Timor-Leste's unusually long and in some ways unique colonial history is explored as a compelling case for these crossings.

Crossing Boundaries in Early Modern England Translations of Thomas a Kempis' De imitatione Christi (1500 – 1700) (6)
Free Download Florian Kubsch, "Crossing Boundaries in Early Modern England: Translations of Thomas a Kempis' De imitatione Christi (1500 - 1700) (6) "
English | ISBN: 3643909675 | 2018 | 310 pages | PDF | 11 MB
Between 1500 and 1700, eight very different English translations of Kempis's Imitatio were published in about 70 editions, crossing boundaries of language, confessional affiliation, and literary genre. This study explores the ways in which biblicism and inwardness, so typical of the Latin original work, are subject to creative transformations by the English translators. Thus, the translations reflect and even influence more general tendencies in the wider corpus of early modern English literature, for example in the works of George Herbert, John Bunyan, and early English Bible translations. Florian Kubsch worked as a researcher at the Department of English at the Eberhard Karls Universitaet Tuebingen, Germany.
