The Ecopoetics of War (EPUB)
Free Download Sylvain Belluc, "The Ecopoetics of War "
English | ISBN: 1032588829 | 2024 | 222 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
The Ecopoetics of War explores the interrelationality of human and nonhuman entities in the context of conflict, as recorded in literature and culture. This collection of essays demonstrates the specific and fertile role of literature in representations of war, as it foregrounds the manifold ways in which the borders between human and nonhuman―including flora, fauna, and technology―become porous, thus questioning traditional onto-epistemological and ethical categories.

The Dying Lineage The Crisis of Political Power in the Mahabharata
Free Download Uma Chakravarti, "The Dying Lineage: The Crisis of Political Power in the Mahabharata"
English | ISBN: 9358527382 | 2024 | 262 pages | PDF | 37 MB
The Dying Lineage has at its core the crises of reproduction that underwrite Vyasa's Mahabharata, a text that best exemplifies the transitional moment from kin-based chiefdoms to monarchical kingdoms in the Indo-Gangetic doab in the mid-first millennium bce. However, lineage building and putting orderly norms of succession into place was a fraught process. The Bharata patriline stared at its imminent extinction at least once every generation, barely perpetuating itself, and always faced with anxiety over its future. This feminist reading 'peoples' this story by bringing into its frame those who are on the margins of the royal household but cannot claim kingship. Reading against the grain, the book explores the link between caste, class and gender in a varna-ordered society. It examines how all three colluded with the patriarchs (and the occasional matriarch) to ensure the survival of the lineage. The fallout was the denial of women's sexual autonomy and the reifying of their wombs to create a field for the seeds of the Bharata men or their proxies. Consequently, an already imperilled and blighted Kuru lineage is torn asunder by fratricidal contradictions, leading to death and destruction, and the end of an era.

The Dream in Islam From Qur'anic Tradition to Jihadist Inspiration
Free Download Iain R. Edgar, "The Dream in Islam: From Qur'anic Tradition to Jihadist Inspiration"
English | ISBN: 0857452355 | 2011 | 178 pages | PDF | 663 KB
The war in the Middle East is marked by a lack of cultural knowledge on the part of the western forces, and this book deals with another, widely ignored element of Islam―the role of dreams in everyday life. The practice of using night dreams to make important life decisions can be traced to Middle Eastern dream traditions and practices that preceded the emergence of Islam. In this study, the author explores some key aspects of Islamic dream theory and interpretation as well as the role and significance of night dreams for contemporary Muslims. In his analysis of the Islamic debates surrounding the role of "true" dreams in historical and contemporary Islamic prophecy, the author specifically addresses the significance of Al-Qaeda and Taliban dream practices and ideology. Dreams of "heaven," for example, are often instrumental in determining Jihadist suicidal action, and "heavenly" dreams are also evidenced within other contemporary human conflicts such as Israel-Palestine and Kosovo-Serbia. By exploring patterns of dreams within this context, a cross-cultural, psychological, and experiential understanding of the role and significance of such contemporary critical political and personal imagery can be achieved.

We've heard plenty from politicians and experts on affirmative action and higher education, about how universities should intervene-if at all-to ensure a diverse but deserving student population. But what about those for whom these issues matter the most? In this book, Natasha K. Warikoo deeply explores how students themselves think about merit and race at a uniquely pivotal moment: after they have just won the most competitive game of their lives and gained admittance to one of the world's top universities.

The Discursive Construction of Southeast Asia in 19th Century Colonial–Capitalist Discourse
Free Download Farish A. Noor, "The Discursive Construction of Southeast Asia in 19th Century Colonial-Capitalist Discourse "
English | ISBN: 9089648844 | 2016 | 304 pages | PDF | 1078 KB
The nations of Southeast Asia today are rapidly integrating economically and politically, but that integration is also counterbalanced by forces ranging from hyper-nationalism to disputes over cultural ownership throughout the region. Those forces, Farish A. Noor argues in this book, have their roots in the region's failure to come to a critical understanding of how current national and cultural identities in the region came about. To remedy that, Noor offers a close account of the construction of Southeast Asia in the nineteenth century by the forces of capitalism and imperialism, and shows how that construct remains a potent aspect of political, economic, and cultural disputes today.

The Diffuse Interstellar Bands
Free Download The Diffuse Interstellar Bands By Wm. H. Smith (auth.), A. G. G. M. Tielens, T. P. Snow (eds.)
1995 | 415 Pages | ISBN: 9401041679 | PDF | 22 MB
The mystery of the diffuse interstellar bands has been variously a curiosity, a co nundrum, and a nuisance for astronomers in the seven decades since the features were first noticed, but recently they have become a forefront issue in astrophysics. Ever since Paul Merrill, in a series of papers starting in 1934, pointed out the interstellar and unidentified nature of the bands, a Who's Who of twentieth century astronomers have tried their hands at solving the problem of identifying the carriers. Henry Norris Russell, Pol Swings, Otto Struve, Paul Ledoux, W. W. Morgan, Walter Adams, Jesse Greenstein, Lawrence Aller, and Gerhard Herzberg all briefly entered the stage, only to move on quickly to other problems where the chances for progress appeared more realistic. In more recent times a number of equally prominent scientists have pursued the bands, but generally only as a sideline to their real astronomical research. But in the past decade, and particularly in the past three years, the view of the search for the diffuse band absorbers as an interesting but perhaps quixotic quest has changed. Today there are several astronomers, as well as laboratory chemists, who are devoting substantial research time and resources to the problem and, as perhaps the most reliable indicator of the newly elevated status of research in this field, some research grants have now been awarded for the study of the bands.

The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde Slavery, Language, and Ideology
Free Download Márcia Rego, "The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde: Slavery, Language, and Ideology"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 0739193775 | PDF | pages: 203 | 1.4 mb
The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde: Slavery, Language, and Ideology is an ethnographic study of language use and ideology in Cape Verde, from its early settlement as a center for slave trade, to the postcolonial present. The study is methodologically rich and innovative in that it weaves together historical, linguistic, and ethnographic data from different eras with sketches of contemporary life-a homicide trial, a scholarly meeting, a competition for a new national flag, a heterodox Catholic mass, an analysis of love letters, a priest's sermon, and a death in the neighborhood. In all these different contexts, Márcia Rego focuses on the role of Kriolu (the Cape Verdean Creole) and its relation to Portuguese-that is, on the way people live through speaking. The Dialogic Nation of Cape Verde shows how, through the dialogic give-and-take of the two languages, Cape Verdeans wrestle with deep-seated colonial hierarchies, invent and rehearse new traditions, and articulate their identity as a sovereign, creole nation.
