Compromising on Justice
Free Download Fabian Wendt, "Compromising on Justice"
English | 2014 | ISBN: 0415741181 | EPUB | pages: 140 | 0.4 mb
When we compromise on justice, we accept or acquiesce to an arrangement that we judge to be unjust, or at least not fully just. Such arrangements are often described as constituting a 'modus vivendi'. What reasons could we have to accept a modus vivendi, thereby compromising on justice? Given the fact of disagreement on justice, this is an important, but rather neglected question in political philosophy. One possible answer, inspired by John Rawls, is that compromising on justice is only justified if this nonetheless brings us as close to ideal justice as possible under given circumstances. The most straightforward way to take issue with this answer is to present other reasons to compromise on justice. The articles in this book explore epistemic reasons and those that stem from values besides justice, like democracy, peace, toleration and non-subjugation. This book thereby sheds some light on the relevance of compromising for the legitimacy of institutional arrangements.

Comparative Perspectives on the Substance of EU Democracy Promotion
Free Download Anne Wetzel, Jan Orbie, Fabienne Bossuyt, "Comparative Perspectives on the Substance of EU Democracy Promotion"
English | 2018 | ISBN: 0367074753 | EPUB | pages: 152 | 0.9 mb
This volume examines the substance of European Union (EU) democracy promotion by comparing it with norms of governance that other international actors promote, among them the United Nations, the United States, the Central and East European EU member states, Russia, China and non-governmental organizations. The book offers a better understanding of the EU's democracy promotion agenda and the (in)distinctiveness of the norms diffused by the EU. Building on a common conceptual introduction, the chapters follow different theoretical approaches and research designs, and focus on a range of diverse case studies. The book concludes that, in comparison with other international actors, the EU's conceptual approach to democracy promotion is diffuse, which in turn makes the EU a particularly flexible but also 'technical' democracy promoter when it comes to implementation. At the same time, there are limits to flexibility at the level of concepts and frames.

Communication, Legitimation and Morality in Modern Politics Studying Public Justification
Free Download Uriel Abulof, Markus Kornprobst, "Communication, Legitimation and Morality in Modern Politics: Studying Public Justification"
English | 2019 | ISBN: 0367891999, 1138554944 | EPUB | pages: 142 | 0.4 mb
Why? This question drives scientific inquiry, not least in the social sciences: why war, revolution, racism and inequality? Asking and debating about 'why?', however, is not the prerogative of scholars; social actors, endowed with thought, reflection and speech, do it too. While we all dance to the beat of genes, emotions, identities and habituated norms, we occasionally stop to ask 'why?' The social sciences have been long preoccupied with the ostensibly objective 'why' while sidelining the social, intersubjective 'why?' This book focuses on the latter, analysing the social actors' search for justification in their public, political sphere. Justifications, broadly understood, are answers to why-questions given and debated by social actors. The chapters focus on public justifications. While the contributors do not submit that private encounters addressing why-questions do not matter, they choose to put public encounters addressing these questions under scrutiny. Given the ongoing telecommunications revolution, and new political practices associated with it, these public encounters become increasingly pertinent in our evolving political orders.

Communication in Global Jihad (Politics, Media and Political Communication)
Free Download Jonathan Matusitz, "Communication in Global Jihad (Politics, Media and Political Communication)"
English | 2020 | ISBN: 0367617072, 0367617064 | EPUB | pages: 242 | 0.6 mb
This book conceptually examines the role of communication in global jihad from multiple perspectives. The main premise is that communication is so vital to the global jihadist movement today that jihadists will use any communicative tool, tactic, or approach to impact or transform people and the public at large. The author explores how and why the benefits of communication are a huge boon to jihadist operations, with jihadists communicating their ideological programs to develop a strong base for undertaking terrorist violence. The use of various information and communication systems and platforms by jihadists exemplifies the most recent progress in the relationship between terrorism, media, and the new information environment.

Coloured Revolutions and Authoritarian Reactions (Democratization Special Issues)
Free Download Yitzhak M. Brudny, "Coloured Revolutions and Authoritarian Reactions (Democratization Special Issues)"
English | 2013 | ISBN: 0415639573 | EPUB | pages: 158 | 0.7 mb
Between 2000 and 2005, colour revolutions swept away authoritarian and semi-authoritarian regimes in Serbia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine. Yet, after these initial successes, attempts to replicate the strategies failed to produce regime change elsewhere in the region. The book argues that students of democratization and democracy promotion should study not only the successful colour revolutions, but also the colour revolution prevention strategies adopted by authoritarian elites. Based on a series of qualitative, country-focused studies the book explores the whole spectrum of anti-democratization policies, adopted by autocratic rulers and demonstrates that authoritarian regimes studied democracy promotion techniques, used in various colour revolutions, and focused their prevention strategies on combatting these techniques.
