The second edition was published in the "Springer Monographs in Mathematics" series in 2005.The branch of model theory described in the present book and called finitemodel theory has its roots in classical model theory but owes its systematicdevelopment to research from complexity theory.Model theory or the theory of models, as it was first named by Tarski in1954, may be considered as the part of the semantics of f.Qrmalized languagesthat is concerned with the interplay between the syntactic structure of anaxiom system on the one hand and (algebraic, set-theoretic, ... ) propertiesof its models on the other hand. As it turned out, first-order language (wemostly speak of first-order logic) became the most prominent language in thisrespect, the reason being that it obeys some fundamental principles such asthe compactness theorem and the completeness theorem. These principles arevaluable modeltheoretic tools and, at the same time, reflect the expressiveweakness of first-order logic. This weakness is the breeding ground for thefreedom which modeltheoretic methods rest upon. They took on this challenge to celebrate their 70th birthdays, knowing that they would be among the oldest on the trail and could confront additional obstacles. They explain how they trained in hills around their home in Anchorage, Alaska and choices they made regarding what to take and how to get to Saint Jean Pied de Port, France, the traditional start point for about 30,000 pilgrims annually. Then readers go with them during their daily walks, first about 500 miles over 38 days to reach the sacred city of Santiago and then another 60 miles over 6 days to villages on the Atlantic coast, where they spread ashes of loved ones onto the ocean. Readers follow in their footsteps day after day, experiencing the Camino as if they too were there crossing regions of northern Spain diverse in culture and rich with history and legend. Readers walk with them across vast countrysides, through large cities and tiny villages, inside small chapels and magnificent cathedrals, discovering these regions as if they were with the authors. Ken and Kathy provide a map of where they walked with a chart of distances traveled daily and include hundreds of pictures revealing the beauty, history, friendships, and challenges they experienced along the way. They conclude with suggestions for those interested in their own pilgrimage, lists of what they read, where they stayed, and what they carried, as well as some statistics regarding the Camino. Their commitment to each other over this journey was simple: "to take every step together." Their story will inspire others to follow in their footsteps. Free Download Epioptics: Linear and Nonlinear Optical Spectroscopy of Surfaces and Interfaces By John McGilp (auth.), J. F. McGlip, D. Weaire, C. H. Patterson (eds.) 1995 | 230 Pages | ISBN: 3642798225 | PDF | 9 MB The study of condensed matter using optical techniques, where photons act as both probe and signal, has a long history. It is only recently, however, that the extraction of surface and interface information, with submonolayer resolution, has been shown to be possible using optical techniques (where "optical" applies to electromagnetic radiation in and around the visible region of the spectrum). This book describes these "epioptic" techniques, which have now been quite widely applied to semiconductor surfaces and interfaces. Particular emphasis in the book is placed on recent studies of submonolayer growth on well-characterised semiconductor surfaces, many of which have arisen from CEC DGJGII ESPRIT Basic Research Action No. 3177 "EPIOPTIC", and CEU DGIII ESPRIT Basic Research Action No. 6878 "EASI". Techniques using other areas of the spectrum such as the infra-red region (IR spectroscopy, in its various surface configurations), and the x-ray region (surface x-ray diffraction, x-ray standing wave), are omitted. The optical techniques described use simple lamp or small laser sources and are thus, in principle, easily accessible. Epioptic probes can provide new information on solid-gas, solid-liquid and liquid-liquid interfaces. They are particularly suited to growth monitoring. Emerging process technologies for fabricating submicron and nanoscale semiconductor devices and novel multilayer materials, whether based on silicon or compound semiconductors, all require extremely precise control of growth at surfaces. In situ, non-destructive, real-time monitoring and characterisation of surfaces under growth conditions is needed for further progress. Both atomic scale resolution, and non-destructive characterisation of buried structures, are required. Free Download Bernard T. Vellios, "Environmental Protection Agency Library Network" English | 2009 | pages: 83 | ISBN: 1606920596 | PDF | 5,1 mb This volume, excerpted from a Government Accountability Office report, examines the Environmental Protection Agency's library network using EPA documents and interviews to assess the status of and plans for the network's reorganization (proposed for 2007). In addition to making recommendations based on the evaluation, it considers the network's rationale for reorganization; the extent to which it communicates with staff and external stakeholders; steps to maintain the quality of libraries after reorganization; and funding the endeavor. |
