The Morality of Revolution Reeducation Camps and the Politics of Punishment in Socialist Mozambique, 1968–1990
Free Download Benedito Luís Machava, "The Morality of Revolution: Reeducation Camps and the Politics of Punishment in Socialist Mozambique, 1968-1990 "
English | ISBN: 0821425838 | 2024 | 344 pages | PDF | 4 MB
The Morality of Revolution offers the first historical examination of urban cleanup campaigns and reeducation camps in socialist Mozambique. The book presents the camps as the template for independent Mozambique's punitive society under Frelimo. Individuals who transgressed the law and socialist normative codes of behavior were targeted by the revolutionary party, which obsessively pursued putative wrongdoers in an effort to build a new society from the ruins of Portuguese colonialism. Benedito Luís Machava argues that the socialist experiment, while ushering in an era of economic development and social progress, sought also to remake the moral fabric of Mozambican society. At play was the contradictory combination of high modernist, socialist aspirations and conservative anxieties rooted in a moralist reading of society. From its inception in 1974 to its demise in the late 1980s, the reeducation program was a do-it-yourself enterprise. The Frelimo government, unable to finance and support the carceral regime, expected its agents and the detainees to carry out the ambitious project on their own. Without material and human resources to run the program, state officials compelled detainees to build their own detention facilities; to grow their own food; to enforce their own political education; and in many ways, to oversee their own incarceration. The state's incapacity to translate the salvationist ideas of reeducation into planned action―a general feature of the socialist experiment in Mozambique―produced spaces of social neglect and castigation that negatively affected both the inmates and the personnel tasked with disciplining and reeducating them.

The Man Who Disappeared (Oxford World's Classics)
Free Download The Man Who Disappeared (Oxford World's Classics) By Franz Kafka, Ritchie Robertson
2012 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 0199601127 | PDF | 1 MB
Entering New York harbor, the young immigrant Karl Rossmann sees the Statue of Liberty, "her arm with the sword stretched upward." This forbidding introduction sets the tone for Kafka's narrative about an innocent European astray in an ultra-modern America that is both a fantasy and an object of social satire. Full of incident and blackly humorous, Kafka's first novel portrays American civilization with horrified fascination, in a biting satire which gives fresh meaning to the term "Kafkaesque." Ritchie Robertson's sensitive and natural translation is both faithful to Kafka's style and highly readable. Moreover, this is the only edition to provide a full introduction and explanatory notes. The introduction explains why Kafka set the novel in America, a country he had never visited, what his sources of information were, and how he distorts his fictional America for satirical purposes. The notes incorporate the most recent Kafka scholarship to illuminate difficult parts of the text. In addition, a Biographical Preface provides an account of Kafka's life. The book also includes an up-to-date bibliography and a chronology.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Making of Israel's Army
Free Download The Making of Israel's Army by Yigal Allon
English | July 5, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0D82D1FXN | 395 pages | PDF | 5.92 Mb
"Allon recounts the growth of the Israeli army from its inception in the 1880's, when Jewish communities in Palestine formed their first small self-defence groups, through the Haganah's clandestine period in the 1920's and 30's and the fighting after 1945 when army and state together achieved legality, to the Sinai Campaign of 1956 and the Six-Day War in June 1967 when the army reached maturity... His precise, economical narrative, interspersed with brief passages of analysis, is supplemented by extensive documentation, which is especially interesting in the way it traces the development of attitudes and doctrine in the Israeli forces. The work is a valuable contribution... It tells us a great deal about the organization, in its various stages, that fought the wars, and helps explain why these assumed the forms that they did, and why they succeeded... a study that is more than a history of a military organization." -Middle Eastern Studies

2019 | 223 Pages | ISBN: 0648499642 | PDF | 26 MB
The Magic Door explores a wide spectrum of inner traditions, highlighting the heroes and teachings that have layed the foundations for initiation in Italy-from Roman times to the present-in the broader context of an esoteric Occidental Tradition. The overarching themes that constitute this tradition include Hesperia, Atavistic Resurgences, and internal practices specific to the Ars Italica: Magia, Amatoria, Memoria, Imaginatio, and Insomnium. Initiation is defined as the individual internal journey to integrate with the Principle (Self, Soul, Numen) and the corresponding Tradition (Olympia, Heroi, Aeneades). In this sense, initiation refers to a process of self-discovery, identity, and tradition.
