English | 2006 | ISBN: 0415396751 | EPUB | pages: 190 | 0.4 mb
Elie Kedourie was one of the twentieth century's most important and controversial historians of the Middle East. He redefined the landscape of the field by challenging the notion that the West's imperial domination of the region spawned nationalism in Arab countries. In a long career lecturing in politics at the London School of Economics, Kedourie inspired a generation of political scientists and politicians. A dedicated scholar and meticulous teacher, he founded Middle Eastern Studies, a journal which, forty years after its launch, remains one of the leading publications in the field and a monument to his work.

Elections in Museveni's Uganda Understanding the 2016 Polls
Free Download Sam Wilkins, Richard Vokes, "Elections in Museveni's Uganda: Understanding the 2016 Polls"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 1138300128, 0367891239 | EPUB | pages: 248 | 0.7 mb
Uganda's 2016 elections, which returned thirty-year incumbent President Yoweri Museveni and his National Resistance Movement (NRM) in yet another landslide, took place in an atmosphere of patronage, coercion and fraud. But is this diagnosis sufficient to understand the processes of voting and regime maintenance in Uganda today? Based on a series of detailed case studies from across Uganda, this book provides a more nuanced and complex picture of what the Museveni regime is, and how it keeps winning elections. Whilst not denying that various electoral malpractices are systemic to the regime's survival, the authors find that these cannot be extricated from Uganda's history, its wider social realities, and its local political cultures in which the NRM has become so embedded. In so doing, the authors - who include anthropologists, development specialists, historians, geographers, and political-scientists - develop new ways of thinking about the meaning of voting and elections in non-democratic Uganda, and elsewhere. This edition was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Eastern African Studies.

Election 2014 Why the Republicans Swept the Midterms
Free Download Ed Kilgore, "Election 2014: Why the Republicans Swept the Midterms"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 0812247442 | EPUB | pages: 118 | 0.4 mb
The Republican party overwhelmingly carried the midterm elections of 2014, winning nearly every contested congressional and gubernatorial seat and taking the Senate after eight years of Democratic control. Many have characterized this sweep as a sign of a fundamental political shift toward the GOP. But acclaimed political commentator Ed Kilgore argues that the results of the midterm elections were a predictable outcome that was less an ideological watershed than the culmination of several long-term cyclical and historical trends.

Efficiency and Justice in the Industrial World v. 2 The Uneasy Success of Postwar Europe
Free Download Dusan Pokorny, "Efficiency and Justice in the Industrial World: v. 2: The Uneasy Success of Postwar Europe"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1563247720 | EPUB | pages: 384 | 0.9 mb
European market integration was originally seen as the way to overcome national enmities in the wake of World War II. Over time, it acquired the purpose of social melioration as well. Today, the advanced market societies are richer than they have ever been, yet each is driven by social and economic divisions as some groups thrive while others lose ground. The tension between the social demand for equity and security, and the market's drive to burst the bonds of state regulation both internally and at the border post, has taken on new complexity. It is this issue that underlies domestic political struggles over privatisation, safety-net programmes, immigration policies and trade agreements. Will European Union survive the stresses of high employment and the strains of German unification? These are some of the questions Dusan Pokorny considers in this second volume of his exploration of the efficiency-justice conundrum.
