Robert of Arbrissel Sex, Sin, and Salvation in the Middle Ages
Free Download Robert of Arbrissel: Sex, Sin, and Salvation in the Middle Ages By Jacques Dalarun
2006 | 188 Pages | ISBN: 0813214394 | PDF | 1 MB
This book tells the fascinating story of Robert of Arbrissel (ca. 1045-1116). Robert was a parish priest, longtime student, reformer, hermit, wandering preacher, and, most famously, founder of the abbey of Fontevraud. There men and women joined together in a monastic life organized so that women ruled men and men served women, according to the founder's plan. As Jacques Dalarun shows in this biography, however, Fontevraud was for Robert only one stopping point in a restless and lifelong journey in search of salvation that took place in roads, forests, towns, and monasteries across France. Hard as the travel was, the spiritual search was more agonizing still. Consumed with a sense of his own sinfulness, sexual and otherwise, Robert lived out penance however he could. The many women who gathered in his wake became partners in his religious quest, and his frequent contact with them was, paradoxically, a centerpiece of his penitential regime. At Fontevraud, he encouraged others to adopt the practice of intense contact with and indeed subservience to women. This reversal of the standard gender hierarchy in the midst of the ongoing battle with sexual temptation has baffled and even enraged observers during Robert's lifetime and ever since. Vividly narrating the course of Robert's life and his relationships with others along the way, the author hews closely to medieval sources, in particular two letters to Robert critical of his nonconformity and his relations with women, along with two admiring accounts written within a few years of his death. This translation by Bruce L. Venarde preserves the novelistic character of the original while updating and augmenting it with full notes, a bibliography, and an introduction both to the book and to scholarly interpretations of Robert in the past two decades. A new preface by Jacques Dalarun completes the reworking of the first full-length biography of Robert of Arbrissel available in English.

Risk in the Roman World
Free Download Jerry Toner, "Risk in the Roman World "
English | ISBN: 1108723217 | 2023 | 156 pages | EPUB | 3 MB
Modern risk studies have viewed the inhabitants of the ancient world as being both dominated by fate and exposed to fewer risks, but this very readable and groundbreaking new book challenges these views. It shows that the Romans inhabited a world full of danger and also that they not only understood uncertainty but employed a variety of ways to help to affect future outcomes. The first section focuses on the range of cultural attitudes and traditional practices that served to help control risk, particularly among the non-elite population. The book also examines the increasingly sophisticated areas of expertise, such as the law, logistics and maritime loans, which served to limit uncertainty in a systematic manner. Religious expertise in the form of dream interpretation and oracles also developed new ways of dealing with the future and the implicit biases of these sources can reveal much about ancient attitudes to risk.

Risk (Key Ideas)
Free Download Risk (Key Ideas) By Deborah Lupton
2023 | 226 Pages | ISBN: 1032327014 | EPUB | 1 MB
We are living in a world in which the existence of risk is constantly debated, misinformation and disinformation are rife and spread quickly and easily through online media, and where governments and institutions continue to avoid taking decisive action even when there is general agreement that a serious threat exists. Understanding how people, social groups and social organizations understand, respond to and act on threats, hazards and dangers is more important than ever. In Risk, Deborah Lupton asserts the ongoing importance of the analysis of risk in our age of permacrisis and mounting scepticism about experts and science, calling for a re-turn' to risk theory in the social sciences.

Rising Sun At War The Japanese Army 1931–1945, Rare Photographs from Wartime Archives

English | ISBN: 1473874882 | 2017 | 160 pages | AZW3 | 25 MB
The Japanese Imperial Army was the most powerful force in the Far East during the 1930s and early 1940s, and this photographic history is the ideal introduction to it. In a vivid selection of archive images, most of which have not before been published, Philip Jowett covers its role in a series of conflicts, beginning with the invasion of Manchuria in 1931 through its final defeat in the Pacific War in August 1945. He describes the development of the army, its structure, organization, and expansion during these years, and illustrates its actions in a series of campaigns that are often overlooked, including those in China between 1931 and 1937 and the Nomonhan campaign against the Soviet Union in 1938.

This book, part of a two-volume exploration, examines the trajectory of India-China relations, spanning from the making of a common border to the events leading to the 1962 war. Relying on vast Chinese, Indian, as well as western sources, the study provides a detailed exegesis of the nature of conflict covering over a century of political contours in the British India, Manchu China, Republican China and finally the Republic of India and Peoples Republic of China. This includes the British as well as Manchu aggression in Tibet and the ensuing diplomatic manoeuvrability between various stakeholders, resulting in conclusion of various conventions and boundaries including the contentious McMahon Line and shifting line alignments of the Chinese in the Western Sector of India-China border. The domestic socio-political and economic climate as well as the equations that resulted from the Cold War between India and China have been looked into and analysed reflecting the Chinese and well as Indian perspectives. The special case of Sino-Pak entente and India-China rivalry in Asia as a whole has been analysed vis-à-vis their security concerns.
