Thinking with Trees
Free Download Thinking with Trees By Jason Allen-Paisant
2021 | 120 Pages | ISBN: 1800171137 | EPUB | 1 MB
Jason Allen-Paisant grew up in a village in central Jamaica. 'Trees were all around, ' he writes, 'we often went to the yam ground, my grandmother's cultivation Description. When I think of my childhood, I see myself entering a deep woodland with cedars and logwood all around. [...] The muscular guango trees were like beings among whom we lived.' Now he lives in Leeds, near a forest where he goes walking. 'Here, trees represent an alternative space, a refuge from an ultra-consumerist culture...' And even as they help him recover his connections with nature, these poems are inevitably political. As Malika Booker writes, 'Allen-Paisant's poetic ruminations deceptively radicalise Wordsworth's pastoral scenic daffodils. The collection racializes contemporary ecological poetics and its power lies in Allen-Paisant's subtle destabilization of the ordinary dog walker's right to space, territory, property and leisure by positioning the colonised Black male body's complicated and unsafe reality in these spaces.

Thinking about Stories An Introduction to Philosophy of Fiction
Free Download Thinking about Stories: An Introduction to Philosophy of Fiction By Samuel Lebens, Tatjana von Solodkoff
2023 | 284 Pages | ISBN: 0367647559 | EPUB | 1 MB
Thinking About Stories is a fun and thought-provoking introduction to philosophical questions about narrative fiction in its many forms, from highbrow literature to pulp fiction to the latest shows on Netflix. Written by philosophers Samuel Lebens and Tatjana von Solodkoff, it engages with fundamental questions about fiction, like: What is it? What does it give us? Does a story need a narrator? And why do sad stories make us cry if we know they aren't real? The format of the book emulates a lively, verbal exchange: each chapter has only one author while the other appears spontaneously in pop-up boxes in the text along the way, raising questions and voicing criticisms, and inviting responses from their co-author. This unique format allows readers to feel like they are a part of the conversation about the philosophical foundations of some of the fictions in their own lives. Key Features Draws on a wide range of types of narrative fiction, from Harry Potter to Breakfast of Champions to Parks and Recreation Explores how fiction, despite its detachment from truth, is often best able to teach us important things about the world in which we live Concludes by asking in the final chapter whether we all might be fictions Includes illustrated text boxes, bibliographies, and annotated suggested reading lists in each chapter

Thinking Sex with the Great Whore Deviant Sexualities and Empire in the Book of Revelation
Free Download Thinking Sex with the Great Whore: Deviant Sexualities and Empire in the Book of Revelation By Luis Menéndez-Antuña
2018 | 225 Pages | ISBN: 1138306991 | EPUB | 1 MB
Many scholars in Biblical and Revelation studies have written at length about the imperial and patriarchal implications of the figure of the Whore of Babylon. However, much of the focus has been on the links to the Roman Empire and ancient attitudes towards gender. This book adds another layer to the conversation around this evocative figure by pursuing an ideological critique of the Great Whore that takes into account contemporary understandings of sexuality, and in so doing advances a de-moralization of apparent sexual deviancy both in the present and in the past. Offering an emancipatory reading of Revelation 17-18 using Foucauldian, postcolonial and queer historiographies, this study sets out alternative paths for identity construction in Biblical texts. By using these alternative critical lenses, the author argues that the common neglect of the ethical and political impact of Biblical texts in the present can be overcome. This, in turn, allows for fresh reflection on the study of the Bible and its implications for progressive politics. Situated at the intersection of Revelation Studies, Biblical Studies and Hermeneutics, as well as Contextual/Liberationist Theologies and Queer and Postcolonial Criticism, this is a cutting edge study that will be of keen interest to scholars of Theology and Religious Studies.

Thick and Thin Moral Argument at Home and Abroad (Frank M. Covey, Jr., Loyola Lectures in Political Analysis)
Free Download Thick and Thin: Moral Argument at Home and Abroad (Frank M. Covey, Jr., Loyola Lectures in Political Analysis) By Michael Walzer
2019 | 128 Pages | ISBN: 0268018847 | PDF | 1 MB
In Thick and Thin: Moral Argument at Home and Abroad, Michael Walzer revises and extends the arguments in his influential Spheres of Justice, framing his ideas about justice, social criticism, and national identity in light of the new political world that has arisen in the past three decades. Walzer focuses on two different but interrelated kinds of moral argument: maximalist and minimalist, thick and thin, local and universal. This new edition has a new preface and afterword, written by the author, describing how the reasoning of the book connects with arguments he made in Just and Unjust Wars about the morality of warfare.Walzer's highly literate and fascinating blend of philosophy and historical analysis will appeal not only to those interested in the polemics surrounding Spheres of Justice and Just and Unjust Wars but also to intelligent readers who are more concerned with getting the arguments right.

Free Download Michael Slusher, "They All Had Eyes: Confessions of a Vivisectionist"
English | ISBN: 1940184231 | 2016 | 211 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Most people have a blind spot in their understanding of how biomedical and pharmaceutical research is performed. They may be vaguely aware that some mice and rats were involved - the animals themselves no doubt benefiting from wondrous injections of life-saving compounds, with minimal suffering. The truth is far more horrifying and brutal than people can imagine. In this book, the author has laid open a raw wound in his heart to help people see behind the curtain and observe what actually takes place in what can only be described as true dungeons of despair. In it, he chronicles the animals that he worked on - from mice to dogs to monkeys - and the terrible procedures that he performed on them as a matter of business. The author shares his reflections about his work and the traumatic memories he experiences as a result, pulling no punches nor whitewashing the details of his previous profession. This book highlights the intense suffering and waste of thousands of lives in such a way as to leave the reader without any doubt about whether animal research is justified or required.
