Die Grundlage der Untersuchung sind daher mehrere, hier erstmals zusammengestellte Epen aus dem südslawischen, iranischen und indischen Bereich, die genau dieselbe Motivreihe mit Heldenzorn und Kampfboykott kennen, und einige traditionelle Erzählungen wie die frührömische Legende von Coriolan, die einen verwandten Heldentypus zeigen und daher vergleichbare Motive aufweisen. Das Ergebnis der Untersuchung ist, dass das Motiv vom Zorn des Achilleus eines von mehreren traditionellen Mustern war, die in je verschiedener Weise die Eroberung einer Stadt durch einen König und seinen wichtigsten Vasallen darstellten. Diese Helfermuster, die sich in anderen indogermanischen Traditionen in isolierter Form finden, wurden von der griechischen epischen Dichtung schon geraume Zeit vor Homer zur Sage vom Trojanischen Krieg zusammengezogen.
