Sokrates missfallen die Äußerungen des Sophisten, und er setzt spontan zu einer Gegenrede an, der er später eine zweite folgen lässt. Im weiteren Verlauf berührt das Gespräch eine Vielzahl an Themen: Es geht um erotische Ergriffenheit und Wahnsinn, Schönheit und ein neues Seelenverständnis, Rhetorik, Dialektik und Schriftkritik. Manche Texte im Phaidros zählen zu den tiefsinnigsten der antiken Philosophie, darunter der berühmte Mythos vom Seelenwagen. Der innere Zusammenhang und das eigentliche Anliegen des Dialogs besteht jedoch in Platons Auseinandersetzung mit der Sophistik, ihren Grundlagen, ihren Methoden und ihren Zielen. Schon im Wechsel des Gesprächsortes, dem Umzug von der Stadt in die Natur, spiegelt sich der Gegensatz von Sophistik und Philosophie; denn anders als der Sophistik, die alles wissen will, geht es Sokrates und Platon vorrangig um den Menschen, um seine Seele und sein Glück.
