The impressive Iron Age site of Husn Salut was the focus of the coeval settlement of the area, and in all likelihood it was also a key site at the regional level. Founded in the second half of the second millennium BC, Husn Salut was a place for public gatherings which also entailed a degree of rituality, an aspect enhanced by its monumental architecture, merging, as it does, with the location on top of a small hill which dominated the surrounding plain and made the site visible from the distance. Agricultural exploitation of the plain, made possible by a sophisticated water management, stood at the basis of the site' s subsistence. The site was largely abandoned after almost one millennium of continuous settlement, probably around 300 BC, with some evidence indicating a possible later date. While the investigation of the associated settlement of Qaryat Salut is just started, this book provides a general overview of the excavation at Husn Salut and its results, together with an exhaustive discussion of its material culture, with a specific attention paid to the pottery assemblage from selected, highly significant stratigraphic sequences. The site' s chronology is also specifically addressed, as an array of radiocarbon determinations, which, when considered together with the associated material culture, indicate its fundamental relevance in the discussion about the chrono-cultural phasing of the Early Iron Age of South East Arabia. ![]() Free Download Humanism and the Urban World: Leon Battista Alberti and the Renaissance City By Caspar Pearson 2011 | 278 Pages | ISBN: 0271048557 | EPUB | 1 MB In Humanism and the Urban World,Caspar Pearson offers a profoundly revisionist account of Leon Battista Alberti's approach to the urban environment as exemplified in the extensive theoretical treatise De re aedificatoria (On the Art of Building in Ten Books), brought mostly to completion in the 1450s, as well as in his larger body of written work. Past scholars have generally characterized the Italian Renaissance architect and theorist as an enthusiast of the city who envisioned it as a rational, Renaissance ideal. Pearson argues, however, that Alberti's approach to urbanism was far more complex--that he was even "essentially hostile" to the city at times. Rather than proposing the "ideal" city, Pearson maintains, Alberti presented a variety of possible cities, each one different from another. This book explores the ways in which Alberti sought to remedy urban problems, tracing key themes that manifest in De re aedificatoria.Chapters address Alberti's consideration of the city's possible destruction and the city's capacity to provide order despite its intrinsic instability; his assessment of a variety of political solutions to that instability; his affinity for the countryside and discussions of the virtues of the active versus the contemplative life; and his theories of aesthetics and beauty, in particular the belief that beauty may affect the soul of an enemy and thus preserve buildings from attack. ![]() Free Download Human-Computer Interaction and Augmented Intelligence: The Paradigm of Interactive Machine Learning in Educational Software English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031844521 | 443 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 43 MB ![]() Free Download Human-Centred Technology Management for a Sustainable Future: Volume 2 English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031724933 | 578 Pages | PDF (True) | 20 MB This proceedings volume contains selected papers from the 33rd International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT) Conference, held from July 8-11, 2024, in Porto, Portugal. It is the second volume of a three-volume set of conference proceedings focused on technologies for a sustainable future. The book explores the challenges and opportunities in today's social and business landscapes, delving into innovative and disruptive concepts. With a special emphasis on the role of technologies, it sheds light on how they enable novel approaches to address current issues. The volume demonstrates that, following the principles of Industry 5.0, technologies can go far beyond productivity and economic gains, contributing to the benefit and comfort of human workers. It also elucidates the necessity of adopting a human-centered approach in utilizing technology to adapt production processes to workers' needs, while ensuring that the implementation of new technologies does not infringe upon the fundamental rights of workers. ![]() Free Download Human-Centered Security by Heidi Trost, Adam Shostack English | December 10, 2024 | ISBN: 1959029096 | 160 pages | PDF | 16 Mb In our interconnected world, we face a complex cybersecurity ecosystem where digital vulnerabilities can have far-reaching consequences. Human performance modification (HPM) is a general term that can encompass actions ranging from the use of "natural" materials, such as caffeine or khat as a stimulant, to the application of nanotechnology as a drug delivery mechanism or in an invasive brain implant. Although the literature on HPM typically addresses methods that enhance performance, another possible focus is methods that degrade performance or negatively affect a military force's ability to fight. Advances in medicine, biology, electronics, and computation have enabled an increasingly sophisticated ability to modify the human body, and such innovations will undoubtedly be adopted by military forces, with potential consequences for both sides of the battle lines. Although some innovations may be developed for purely military applications, they are increasingly unlikely to remain exclusively in that sphere because of the globalization and internationalization of the commercial research base. Based on its review of the literature, the presentations it received and on its own expertise, the Committee on Assessing Foreign Technology Development in Human Performance Modification chose to focus on three general areas of HPM: human cognitive modification as a computational problem, human performance modification as a biological problem, and human performance modification as a function of the brain-computer interface. Human Performance Modification: Review of Worldwide Research with a View to the Future summarizes these findings. ![]() Free Download Human Kindness and the Smell of Warm Croissants: An Introduction to Ethics By Ruwen Ogien; Martin Thom 2015 | 256 Pages | ISBN: 023153924X | PDF | 1 MB Human Kindness and the Smell of Warm Croissants makes philosophy fun, tactile, and popular. Moral thinking is simple, Ruwen Ogien argues, and as inherent as the senses. In our daily experiences, in the situations we confront and in the scenes we witness, we develop an understanding of right and wrong as sophisticated as the moral outlook of the world's most gifted philosophers. By drawing on this knowledge to navigate life's most perplexing problems, ethics becomes second nature.Ogien explores, through experimental philosophy and other methods, the responses nineteen real-world conundrums provoke. Is a short, mediocre life better than no life at all? Is it acceptable to kill a healthy person so his organs can save five others? Would you swap a "natural" life filled with frustration, disappointment, and partial success for a world in which all of your needs are met, but through artificial and mechanical means? Ogien doesn't seek to show how difficult it is to determine right from wrong or how easy it is for humans to become monsters or react like saints. Helping us tap into the wisdom and feeling we already possess in our ethical "toolboxes," Ogien instead encourages readers to question moral presuppositions and rules; embrace an intuitive sense of dignity, virtue, and justice; and pursue a pluralist ethics suited to the principles of human kindness. |
