Kind Words, Cruise Missiles, and Everything in Between
Free Download Barbara Kunz, William Hill, "Kind Words, Cruise Missiles, and Everything in Between: The Use of Power Resources in U.S. Policies towards Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus 1989-2008"
English | 2017 | ISBN: 3838210859 | EPUB | pages: 280 | 0.6 mb
According to realist premises, the United States has an interest in remaining the world's only superpower, thus creating the need to manage and maintain unipolarity. The pursuit of this grand strategy, however, required the U.S. to adapt its various strategies to individual states. Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus have played very different roles. While Poland was labeled "America's best friend" by President George W. Bush, Belarus was by no means seeking alignment with the U.S., whereas Ukraine-U.S. relations were subject to many ups and downs. These attitudes towards Washington led to very different policy approaches from a U.S. vantage point. As this study thus shows, the U.S. did not have an overall strategy for the region. Rather, Washington managed its relations with European states through a set of mainly bilateral relations. Madeleine Albright once described the tools of foreign policy as including "everything from kind words to cruise missiles." This book is a comparative case study of the U.S. use of these tools in its approaches toward Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus after the end of the Cold War. As the "only remaining superpower," Washington played a key role in Central and Eastern Europe. Yet, its actions and policies have received comparatively little attention. This book contributes to filling that gap by providing three in-depth case studies.

Khrushchev and Brezhnev as Leaders Building Authority in Soviet Politics
Free Download George W. Breslauer, "Khrushchev and Brezhnev as Leaders: Building Authority in Soviet Politics"
English | 2016 | ISBN: 1138686700 | EPUB | pages: 318 | 0.4 mb
First published in 1982, this book explores how Khrushchev and Brezhnev manipulated their policies and personal images as they attempted to consolidate their authority as leader. Central issues of Soviet domestic politics are examined: investment priorities, incentive policy, administrative reform, and political participation. The author rejects the conventional images of Khrushchev as an embattled consumer advocate and decentraliser, and of Brezhnev's leadership as dull and conservative. He looks at how they dealt with the task of devising programs that combined the post-Stalin elite's goals of consumer satisfaction and expanded political participation with traditional Soviet values.

Kenyan, Christian, Queer Religion, LGBT Activism, and Arts of Resistance in Africa
Free Download Adriaan van Klinken, "Kenyan, Christian, Queer: Religion, LGBT Activism, and Arts of Resistance in Africa "
English | ISBN: 0271083816 | 2020 | 248 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Popular narratives cite religion as the driving force behind homophobia in Africa, portraying Christianity and LGBT expression as incompatible. Without denying Christianity's contribution to the stigma, discrimination, and exclusion of same-sex-attracted and gender-variant people on the continent, Adriaan van Klinken presents an alternative narrative, foregrounding the ways in which religion also appears as a critical site of LGBT activism.

Kenya's Uncertain Democracy The Electoral Crisis of 2008
Free Download Peter Kagwanja, Roger Southall, "Kenya's Uncertain Democracy: The Electoral Crisis of 2008"
English | 2010 | ISBN: 0415550424 | EPUB | pages: 210 | 0.9 mb
The plunging of Kenya, until recently a centre of stability and growth in East Africa, into political and economic uncertainty following the general election of December 2007 is regarded as a major cause for global and African concern. It is widely accepted that the elections were deeply flawed, and that there was electoral malfeasance by all the major players. President Kibaki's rapid declaration of victory in the face of a heavily disputed election and his determination to hold on to the levers of state power precipitated a deadly crisis, communal violence and economic decline. A power-sharing deal between Kibaki and Opposition leader, Raila Odinga signed in February seems to be holding, but Kenya ranks among the worlds' growing number of democracies at-risk.

Kenneth Burke's Weed Garden Refiguring the Mythic Grounds of Modern Rhetoric
Free Download Kyle Jensen, "Kenneth Burke's Weed Garden: Refiguring the Mythic Grounds of Modern Rhetoric"
English | ISBN: 0271092920 | 2022 | 236 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Since its publication in 1950, Kenneth Burke's A Rhetoric of Motives has been one of the most influential texts of theory and criticism. Critics have discovered in its pages concepts that reveal new dimensions of human motivation. And yet, despite its obvious genius, critics have interpreted A Rhetoric of Motives as a collection of provocations rather than a systematic treatment of rhetoric.

The reports in this volume document the DSP's efforts over a decade to expand and rejuvenate revolutionary socialism in Australia and internationally.

Kantian Theory and Human Rights
Free Download Andreas Follesdal, Reidar Maliks, "Kantian Theory and Human Rights"
English | 2015 | ISBN: 1138194506 | EPUB | pages: 232 | 0.6 mb
Human rights and the courts and tribunals that protect them are increasingly part of our moral, legal, and political circumstances. The growing salience of human rights has recently brought the question of their philosophical foundation to the foreground. Theorists of human rights often assume that their ideal can be traced to the philosophy of Immanuel Kant and his view of humans as ends in themselves. Yet, few have attempted to explore exactly how human rights should be understood in a Kantian framework. The scholars in this book have gathered to fill this gap. At the center of Kant's theory of rights is a view of freedom as independence from domination. The chapters explore the significance of this theory for the nature of human rights, their justification, and the legitimacy of international human rights courts.
