The conference was started by Sandia National Laboratories in 1992 as a small meeting of organizations striving to establish a common focus for research and dev- opment in the field of mesh generation. Now after 17 consecutive years, the Inter- tional Meshing Roundtable has become recognized as an international focal point annually attended by researchers and developers from dozens of countries around the world. The 17th International Meshing Roundtable consists of technical presentations from contributed papers, research notes, keynote and invited talks, short course pr- entations, and a poster session and competition. The Program Committee would like to express its appreciation to all who participate to make the IMR a successful and enriching experience. The papers in these proceedings were selected from more than 50 paper subm- sions. Based on input from peer reviews, the committee selected these papers for their perceived quality, originality, and appropriateness to the theme of the International Meshing Roundtable. We would like to thank all who submitted papers. We would also like to thank the colleagues who provided reviews of the submitted papers. The names of the reviewers are acknowledged in the following pages. We extend special thanks to Jacqueline Hunter and Bernadette Watts for their time and effort to make the 17th IMR another outstanding conference. Michael Genovese examines how each president tried to solve the problems raised by the possession and spread of nuclear arms. Some presidents were aware of the grave dangers; others imagined that nuclear weapons could be useful battlefield weapons; still others tried to build up the nuclear arsenal while others sought to cut the arsenals. This book also analyzes the role of nuclear weapons and the rise of presidential power. The nuclear age has contributed to the dominance of the American presidency in foreign policy and war. To policy makers and politicians alike, the nuclear threat meant that command and control had to be placed in the hands of a central commander: the President of the United States. It concludes with an examination of the ethical and pragmatic issues regarding nuclear weapons and their use. ![]() Free Download Preparing for an Influenza Pandemic: Personal Protective Equipment for Healthcare Workers By Institute of Medicine; Board on Health Sciences Policy; Committee on Personal Protective Equipment for Healthcare Workers During an Influenza Pandemic; Catharyn T. Liverman; Lewis R. Goldfrank 2007 | 205 Pages | ISBN: 0309110467 | EPUB | 1 MB During an influenza pandemic, healthcare workers will be on the front lines delivering care to patients and preventing further spread of the disease. As the nation prepares for pandemic influenza, multiple avenues for protecting the health of the public are being carefully considered, ranging from rapid development of appropriate vaccines to quarantine plans should the need arise for their implementation. One vital aspect of pandemic influenza planning is the use of personal protective equipment (PPE)-the respirators, gowns, gloves, face shields, eye protection, and other equipment that will be used by healthcare workers and others in their day-to-day patient care responsibilities. However, efforts to appropriately protect healthcare workers from illness or from infecting their families and their patients are greatly hindered by the paucity of data on the transmission of influenza and the challenges associated with training and equipping healthcare workers with effective personal protective equipment. Due to this lack of knowledge on influenza transmission, it is not possible at the present time to definitively inform healthcare workers about what PPE is critical and what level of protection this equipment will provide in a pandemic. The outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003 have underscored the importance of protecting healthcare workers from infectious agents. The surge capacity that will be required to reduce mortality from a pandemic cannot be met if healthcare workers are themselves ill or are absent due to concerns about PPE efficacy. The IOM committee determined that there is an urgent need to address the lack of preparedness regarding effective PPE for use in an influenza pandemic. Preparing for an Influenza Pandemic : Personal Protective Equipment for Healthcare Workers identifies that require expeditious research and policy action: (1) Influenza transmission research should become an immediate and short-term research priority so that effective prevention and control strategies can be developed and refined. The current paucity of knowledge significantly hinders prevention efforts. (2) Employer and employee commitment to worker safety and appropriate use of PPE should be strengthened. Healthcare facilities should establish and promote a culture of safety. (3) An integrated effort is needed to understand the PPE requirements of the worker and to develop and utilize innovative materials and technologies to create the next generation of PPE capable of meeting these needs. |
