In Hostile Humor in Renaissance France, Bruce Hayes investigates this period leading up to the French Wars of Religion, when a deliberately harmful and destructive form of satire appeared. This study examines both pamphlets and plays to show how this new form of humor emerged that attacked religious practices and people in ways that forever changed the nature of satire and religious debate in France. Hayes explores this phenomenon in the context of the Catholic and Protestant conflict to reveal new insights about the society that both exploited and vilified this kind of satire. ![]() Free Download History of the Italian Forest Landscape (Environmental History, 19) by Mauro Agnoletti English | May 11, 2025 | ISBN: 3031816307 | 285 pages | PDF, EPUB | 87 Mb The book explain the history of the italian forest landscape from preroman times to the present. The aim is to demonstrate that all the Italian forest have been shaped by human activities through the centuries and they are an important component of the Italian cultural landscape. The content explores case studies from the north to the south of Italy explaining how human activities shaped extension, density, species composition and structure of the forests in order to meet the need of the society, as well as influencing their ecological features. Timber, fuel wood, charcoal production , as well as shipbuilding, are taken into consideration, but also forest managed for food production( eg. Chestnut forests, wood pastures, pine forests ). Cases such as Venice and the silviculture developed by monasteries are described. The history of the afforestation made by the Italian state in response to climate crisis is also considered as well as case studies related to specific management forms as those related to fires. Management methods such high stand and coppice are explained addressing also the many different traditional practices adopted by the local populations ( selective cutting, pollarding, shredding etc.). The book also shows how forests have doubled their extension since the second world on abandoned farmed land. ![]() Free Download History of Fashion Step by Step: Fashion Through the Ages: Trends, Icons & Movements (Step By Step Subject Guides) by Lydia Ford English | November 18, 2024 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0DNKWK28K | 148 pages | PDF | 2.02 Mb History of Fashion Step by Step is the ultimate guide to the world of fashion across centuries, detailing the evolution of trends, movements, and icons. Gunn 2010 | 300 Pages | ISBN: 0810867540 | EPUB | 1 MB East Timor, also known as Timor-Leste, comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, located at the eastern end of the Indonesian archipelago. East Timor was among the last of colonial territories to become independent, and it actually had to be liberated twice. First, after more than four centuries of Portuguese colonial rule, it achieved independence in 1975 only to be invaded and occupied by Indonesia. After a blood-soaked occupation of 24 years and following intense international pressure, the Jakarta-regime only grudgingly allowed East Timor to form a nation of its own in 1999. Since then, the new state has faced further armed clashes and is only now able to seriously engage in nation-building. Historical Dictionary of East Timor relates the turbulent history of this country through a chronology, an introductory essay, an expansive bibliography, and over 200 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, events, places, organizations, and other aspects of East Timor history from the earliest times to the present. ![]() Free Download Hinge By Molly Spencer 2020 | 98 Pages | ISBN: 0809337975 | EPUB | 1 MB Finding joy and beauty in the face of suffering Readers enter "a stunted world," where landmarks--a river, a house, a woman's own body--have become unrecognizable in a place as distorted and dangerous as any of the old tales poet Molly Spencer remasters in this elegant, mournful collection. In myth and memory, through familiar stories reimagined, she constructs poetry for anyone who has ever stumbled, unwillingly, into a wilderness. In these alluring poems, myth becomes part of the arsenal used to confront the flaws and failures of our fallible bodies. Shadowing the trajectory of an elegy, this poetry collection of lament, remembrance, and solace wrestles with how we come to terms with suffering while still finding joy, meaning, and beauty. Spencer alternates between the clinical and the domestic, disorientation and reorientation, awe and awareness. With the onset of a painful chronic illness, the body and mental geography turn hostile and alien. In loss and grief, in physical and psychological landscapes, Spencer searches the relationship between a woman's body and her house--places where she is both master and captive--and hunts for the meaning of suffering. Finally, with begrudging acceptance, we have a hypothesis for all seasons: there is suffering, there is mercy; they are not separate but are for and of one another. ![]() Free Download Hindi for Beginners and Travelers: An Aggregated Guide for English Speakers Who Want to Learn Hindi On-The-Go! by Shuk Institute English | March 1, 2023 | ISBN: N/A | ASIN: B0BR1RLHG6 | 160 pages | EPUB | 1.90 Mb A bespoke approach to learning and mastering Hindi - the love language! ![]() Free Download Higher-Form Symmetry and Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis English | 2025 | ISBN: 9819616425 | 89 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 8 MB The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is a successful framework providing criteria for thermalization in isolated quantum systems. Although numerical and theoretical analyses support the ETH as a fundamental mechanism for explaining thermalization in diverse systems, it remains a challenge to analytically identify whether particular systems satisfy the ETH. In quantum many-body systems and quantum field theories, phenomena that violate the ETH are expected to imply nontrivial thermalization processes, and are gathering increasing attention. This book elucidates how the existence of higher-form symmetries influences the dynamics of thermalization in isolated quantum systems. Under reasonable assumptions, it is analytically shown that a p-form symmetry in a (d+1)-dimensional quantum field theory leads to the breakdown of the ETH for many nontrivial (d-p)-dimensional observables. In the case of discrete higher-form (i.e., p ≥ 1) symmetry, this indicates the absence of thermalization for observables that are non-local but much smaller than the entire system size even though the system do have no local conserved quantities. The author provides numerical evidence for this argument for the (2+1)-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory. While local observables such as a plaquette operator thermalize even for mixed symmetry sectors, the non-local observable such as the one exciting a magnetic dipole instead relaxes to the generalized Gibbs ensemble that takes account of the Z2 1-form symmetry. The assumptions of the ETH-violation include the mixing of symmetry sectors within a given energy shell. This condition is rather challenging to verify because it requires information on the eigenstates in the middle of the spectrum. In the subsequent chapter, we further reconsider this assumption from the viewpoint of a projective phase to alleviate this difficulty. In the case of ZN symmetries, the difficulty can be circumvented considering ZNxZN-symmetric theories with a projective phase, and then perturbing the Hamiltonian while preserving one of the ZN symmetries of interest. Additionally, the book also presents numerical analyses for (1+1)-dimensional spin chains and the (2+1)-dimensional Z2 lattice gauge theory to demonstrate this scenario. ![]() Free Download Higgidy Clever with Veg: Fabulous, fuss-free vegetarian recipes by Camilla Stephens English | March 14, 2024 | ISBN: 1784729027 | 224 pages | EPUB | 11 Mb For Higgidy founder, Camilla Stephens, the answer is to get clever with veg - and her latest cookbook is packed with gloriously easy roasting-tin suppers, faff-free one-pan wonders, speedy salads and family favourites ready in under one hour.
