Foundations of National Identity From Catalonia to Europe
Free Download Foundations of National Identity : From Catalonia to Europe By Josep R. Llobera
2004 | 226 Pages | ISBN: 1571816127 | PDF | 1 MB
Since it emergence in the 19th century in response to feudalism, nationalism has been a mixed blessing. Originally seen as a positive force, often enough it has resulted in warfare and persecution of minorities, so much so that, over time, it has been considered a social evil whose apparent decline has been greeted as a positive development. The author disputes this or rather, he maintains that the picture that emerges is more complex: nationalism is not disappearing but has taken on a different form. What we are experiencing is an increasing autonomy of ethnonations, i.e. nations without a state, in the wake of a weakening of the multinational states and the transfer of their sovereignty upwards, in the case of Europe to the federation of the European Union, and downwards to the "ethnonations." Catalonia is the major case study in this book but it is embedded in a comprehensive theoretical framework as well as the historical and contemporary reality of Europe, opening up a new perspective. The author, one of the foremost scholars in this field, brilliantly succeeds in developing an original, clear and comprehensive vision of nationalism that is accessible to a wide readership.

Force, Movement, Intensity The Newtonian Imagination in the Humanities and Social Sciences
Free Download Force, Movement, Intensity : The Newtonian Imagination in the Humanities and Social Sciences By Ghassan Hage; Emma Kowal; Emma Kowal
2011 | 173 Pages | ISBN: 0522860818 | EPUB | 1 MB
Of all the scientific works that have influenced the social sciences and humanities, none has matched the profound effect of the work of Isaac Newton. In his 1687 masterpiece Principia Mathematica he laid the foundation of classical mechanics in his discoveries of the laws of motion and the law of universal gravitation. He reoriented human understanding of the cosmos, thus boosting the confidence of human beings to access elements of what they saw as the divine logic behind the order of things and to have a sense of control over it. From the nineteenth century to the present day, Newton's science has inspired scholars of society in their attempts to discern the patterns of social life. For others, such a positivist project serves as a cautionary tale to be resisted by contemporary social sciences. This book considers the original and continuing legacy of Newtonian theories and imaginaries in the vast array of human attempts to understand the world. Drawing from a range of disciplines; including anthropology, sociology, the history of science, literary studies, cultural studies, social theory and economics; the essays in this volume engage with Newton as a thinker and examine his legacy. Some contributions illustrate the power of physical metaphors in understanding the social world; many others point to the limits of this endeavour. Still others show how since the eighteenth century Newtonian thought has influenced thinkers as diverse as Blake, Marx, Freud and Pierre Bourdieu. This innovative collection prompts a reconsideration of the importance of Newton for the social sciences and humanities.

Food, Drink and Identity Cooking, Eating and Drinking in Europe since the Middle Ages
Free Download Peter Scholliers, "Food, Drink and Identity: Cooking, Eating and Drinking in Europe since the Middle Ages"
English | 2001 | pages: 237 | ISBN: 1859734618 | PDF | 1,7 mb
Food and drink have provided fascinating insights into cultural patterns in consumer societies. There is an intimate relationship between food and identity but processes of identity formation through food are far from clear. This book adds a new perspective to the existing body of scholarship by addressing pivotal questions: is food central or marginal to identity construction? Does food equally matter for all group(ing)s? Why would, in peoples experience, food become especially important at one moment, or, on the contrary, lose its significance? The origin of food habits is also interrogated. Contributors investigate how, when, why and by whom cooking, eating and drinking were used as a means of distinction. Leading historians and sociologists look at concepts of authenticity, adjustment, invention and import, as well as food signs and codes, and why they have been accepted or rejected. They examine a wide range of periods and topics: the elderly, alcohol and identity in Early Modern Europe; food riots and national identity; noble families, eating and drinking in eighteenth-century Spain; consumption and the working class in the nineteenth century; commensality; the meaning of Champagne in Belle-Epoque France; the narrative of food in Norway; wine and bread in French Algeria; food and identity in post-war Germany. This intriguing book brings together new, comparative insights and research that allow a better understanding of processes of integration and segregation, the role of food in the construction of identity, and the relationship between old and new food habits.

Food Between the Country and the City Ethnographies of a Changing Global Foodscape
Free Download Nuno Domingos, "Food Between the Country and the City: Ethnographies of a Changing Global Foodscape"
English | ISBN: 0857856499 | 2014 | 264 pages | PDF | 2 MB
At a time when the relationship between 'the country' and 'the city' is in flux worldwide, the value and meanings of food associated with both places continue to be debated. Building upon the foundation of Raymond Williams' classic work, The Country and the City, this volume examines how conceptions of the country and the city invoked in relation to food not only reflect their changing relationship but have also been used to alter the very dynamics through which countryside and cities, and the food grown and eaten within them, are produced and sustained.

English | June 20, 2023 | ISBN: 1665744634 | 322 pages | EPUB | 6.48 Mb
"Spin, crash, and burn." These words describe a helicopter pilot's worst case scenario, and which Lieutenant Richard Greene kept trying to avoid during his service as a reconnaissance pilot in the Vietnam War. As an "Outcast" in his Bell observation helicopter, Greene witnessed many close calls, snafus, and over-reach during multiple military operations. But throughout, Greene found humor, beauty, and friendship, which he captured in letters to his wife as well as with his Instamatic camera. This book combines these into a compelling personal account of the War from the air, and on the ground at his base in Phu Loi.
