Es waren die Briten (auf Betreiben von Winston Churchill), die mit dem "Landschiff" Pionierarbeit leisteten, aber die Franzosen folgten ihnen bald mit ihren eigenen Konstruktionen. Ironischerweise griff Deutschland, das später für seine Panzer und den Blitzkrieg berühmt werden sollte, diese Idee erst spät auf. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs setzten die Deutschen weiterhin auf andere Techniken und produzierten weniger als zwei Dutzend Modelle für den Einsatz auf dem Schlachtfeld.
