Ethnic Worlds in Select Indian Fiction
Free Download Ethnic Worlds in Select Indian Fiction By Juri Dutta
2014 | 166 Pages | ISBN: 8132118464 | EPUB | 1 MB
The book is the first of its kind in using the methodology of Comparative Literature to look at ethnographic fiction written in different regional languages of India. The issue of cultural identity of writers has often been seen as a simple case of a one-to-one relationship between the writer and the community of his/her birth. However, in reality, there is no one cultural space that any writer, or even any individual, inhabits. Cultural boundaries are today more porous than ever, and it is highly problematic to see the writer as either an 'insider' or 'outsider' of any ethnic community about which he/she writes. Informed by such perspectives, Ethnic Worlds in Select Indian Fiction closely looks at the chronological history of the Assamese ethnic novel within the framework of Comparative Literature. It is very rare that literary representations by and about ethnic communities in India have been compared and contrasted.

Ethnic Politics in Israel The Margins and the Ashkenazi Centre
Free Download Ethnic Politics in Israel : The Margins and the Ashkenazi Centre By As'ad Ghanem; Dr As'ad Ghanem
2009 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 0415547350 | EPUB | 1 MB
This book offers an analysis on contemporary Israeli democracy, examining in particular society and politics from the perspectives of the different ethnic groups outside of the Ashkenazi mainstream. The book explores the political expressions of the secondary groups in Israel (Mizrahim, Religious, Russians and Palestinian-Arab) and how these groups where treated by the Ashkinazim as a threat to its hegemony over the state. Looking at the instability created by the struggle of these marginal groups against the state, and the discrimination policy practiced by the Ashkenazi 'hegemonic ethnic state' regime against the other, non-Ashkenazi, groups, the book illustrates how this has contributed to the failure to establish an 'Israeli people'. Ethnic Politics in Israel will be of great interest to students and researchers in the fields of Middle East, Palestinian, Arab, Jewish and Israeli studies, political science, sociology and psychology.

Ethnic Diversity and Solidarity A Study of Their Complex Relationship
Free Download Ethnic Diversity and Solidarity : A Study of Their Complex Relationship By Ferry Koster; Paul de Beer
2017 | 207 Pages | ISBN: 1443881716 | PDF | 1 MB
Ethnic diversity and solidarity are often thought to be at odds with each other. In an increasingly diverse society, individuals find it more difficult to identify with other citizens and, therefore, are less willing to show solidarity. Empirical tests of the relationship between diversity and solidarity are, however, inconclusive. This book tests the hypothesis that diversity undermines solidarity in various ways. It discusses the meaning of social solidarity and the different motives that people can have to act solidary, and it examines the relationship between ethnic diversity and solidarity at the national, regional and local levels. These empirical tests use multiple methods, such as an international survey, a vignette study among the Dutch population, and a field experiment involving visitors to a popular market in Amsterdam. The role of the mass media is examined by studying the images of different ethnic groups that are presented in some popular newspapers, TV programmes and a news provider on the Internet. The collection concludes that, although ethnicity is certainly an important factor in understanding patterns of solidarity, there is not a simple linear relationship between ethnic diversity and solidarity. Even though ethnic difference in itself may be a source of discrimination, one cannot conclude from this that increasing ethnic diversity will necessarily result in less solidarity.

Ethics, Social Responsibility and Innovation in Corporate Governance
Free Download Ethics, Social Responsibility and Innovation in Corporate Governance By Jernej Belak; Mojca Duh
2016 | 141 Pages | ISBN: 1443816906 | PDF | 1 MB
The misconduct of various companies directs both practitioners and academics towards the necessity for a requisitely holistic approach to governance and management. As such, there is a current focus for researchers and practitioners on contemporary solutions for governance and management in this sense. Such efforts have led to the development of integral management and governance, meaning that the process of management and governance in a certain company has to be integrated and consistent with culture, credibility, entrepreneurial spirit, ecology, ethics, innovation, and social responsibility. Consequently, in the process of a company's management and governance, the key stakeholders have to achieve the (corporate) integrity of their company's functioning. The integrity of such a company's functioning is currently treated as the precondition for a company's success in the long run. This volume explores such issues in the broader context of the MER Model of Integral Management and Governance, which is based on the multi-layered integration of governance and management with an enterprise and its environment, considering the fundamental aspirations for the enterprise's existence and, thus, its quantitative, as well as qualitative, changes.

Ethics, Life and Institutions. an Attempt at Practical Philosophy
Free Download Ethics, Life and Institutions. an Attempt at Practical Philosophy By Jan Sokol; Neil Cairns; Markéta Pauzerová
2016 | 258 Pages | ISBN: 8024634295 | EPUB | 1 MB
General complaints about moral decay, however frequent, and perhaps even justified they might be, are of little use. This book is not complaining. It is an attempt to apply our improved knowledge in various fields to questions of morality. It seeks to enhance our ability to discern among different moral phenomena and to discuss them more precisely. Second, it tries to take use of recent developements of sciences, in particular sciences of life, in practical philosophy, without giving up the differences between a human and other living beings. _x000D__x000D_With very few exceptions, the whole tradition of moral philosophy considers the acting person to be an autonomous, independent individual, handling with his or her own property to pursue his or her own happiness. On the other hand, most of us in the contemporary societies are often acting as employees or representatives of social institutions, using entrusted property and competence of our employers to pursue their - and not our own - goals. People in public roles, like judges, policemen or clerks, cannot guide themselves even by the categorical imperative or by the role reversal test. In complex networks of organizations, morals cannot be fully replaced by written rules, as some philosophers think, but takes a different shape. _x000D__x000D_The content of the book can be roughly divided into three parts. In the first one, the basic notions of e.g. freedom, life, responsibility or justice are analyzed and precized, as well as varied layers of practical philosophy. The second is a succinct overview of main schools or streams of western moral thought, trying to find a binding and universal foundation of morals and ethics. The third part re-introduces another founding idea, rather forgotten in modern times, namely the idea of heritage, both biologiocal and cultural, of the past. This idea, widespread e.g. in the sedentary farming societies, has to be reformulated, but could be fundamental for more realistic and efficient solutions of our responsibility for life and nature. The last part is a tentative analysis of moral relations and problems connected with the growing complexity of institutions._x000D__x000D_Jan Sokol (1936) is a former dissident, translator and post-1990 politician. He studied mathematics, cultural anthropology and philosophy at Charles University in Prague, where he is full professor of philosophy. In the fall semester 2008/9 he was teaching Ethics and Human Rights at Harvard University, Cambridge (MA). He published some 25 books (in English: Thinking about ordinary things. 2014) and several hundreds of articles in various languages. www.jansokol.cz_x000D__x000D_

Although the topic of decision making capacity and older persons has been discussed in the literature, there still is much to be learned about it theoretically and practically. Questions such as: When should a capacity assessment be done on an older person and by whom? are covered by the editors. Topics included in this volume are the application of an original framework for ethical decision making in long term care; an elder's capacity to decide to remain living alone in the community; the quest for helpful standardized instruments for evaluating decision making capacity; and end-of-life liability issues.;chapter

Ethics, Knowledge and Truth in Sports Research An Epistemology of Sport
Free Download Ethics, Knowledge and Truth in Sports Research : An Epistemology of Sport By Graham McFee; Mike J. McNamee; Jim Parry; Heather Reid
2010 | 234 Pages | ISBN: 0415493145 | EPUB | 1 MB
The study of sport is characterised by its inter-disciplinarity, with researchers drawing on apparently incompatible research traditions and ethical benchmarks in the natural sciences and the social sciences, depending on their area of specialisation. In this groundbreaking study, Graham McFee argues that sound high-level research into sport requires a sound rationale for one's methodological choices, and that such a rationale requires an understanding of the connection between the practicalities of researching sport and the philosophical assumptions which underpin them. By examining touchstone principles in research methodology, such as the contested 'gold standard' of voluntary informed consent in the natural sciences and the postmodern denial of 'truth' in the social sciences, McFee demonstrates that epistemology and ethics are inextricably linked. Drawing on a wide range of examples, from the laboratory to the sports field, McFee explores the concepts of 'knowledge' and 'truth' in sports research and makes a powerful case for a philosophical deepening of our approach to method and methodology in sport. This book is important reading for all advanced students and researchers working in sport, exercise and related disciplines.
