The Confrontational Wit of Jesus Christian Humanism and the Moral Imagination
Free Download The Confrontational Wit of Jesus : Christian Humanism and the Moral Imagination By Catherine M. Wallace
2016 | 182 Pages | ISBN: 1498228909 | EPUB | 1 MB
Jesus did not die to save us from God. He died because the Romans did not tolerate charismatic teachers who attracted a lively following. Jesus attracted that following through his personal compassion, his confrontational inclusivity, and his skill in using laughter as a nonviolent weapon of mass disruption. The Gospel authors picked up Jesus' witty techniques. They adeptly parodied the literary conventions of heroic biography, laying out "the kingdom of God" in a point-for-point contrast with the empire of Caesar Augustus. Most of this contrast was Jewish Prophetic Rant, Standard Edition: the God of the Jews had always demanded justice for workers, food for the hungry, care for those unable to earn a living, and an end to monopolizing natural resources for private and imperial profit. Jesus added a fourth and telling point: God is nonviolent. God smites no one. God's loving-kindness and compassionate presence embraces all of humanity equally. We are all the children of God. Then and now, that's a revolutionary claim. It portrays our obligation to the common good as a sacred obligation. It's owed to God. In cultural terms, that's the most potent variety of obligation. This is the cultural heritage at risk from fundamentalism, which portrays God as both crazy-violent and vindictive.

Social Construction, Communication, and Christianity uses the theory of social construction and the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein to examine the current divide between religious and secular narratives in the United States. This book is recommended for scholars of communication studies, religious studies, sociology, philosophy, and history.

The Concept of Time
Free Download The Concept of Time By Martin Heidegger
2019 | 112 Pages | ISBN: 1441198873 | EPUB | 1 MB
The Concept of Time presents Heidegger's so-called Dilthey review, widely considered the first draft of his celebrated masterpiece, Being and Time. Here Heidegger reveals his deep commitment to Wilhelm Dilthey and Count Yorck von Wartenburg. He agrees with them that historicity must be at the centre of the new philosophy to come. However, he also argues for an ontological approach to history. From this ontological turn he develops the so-called categories of Dasein. This work demonstrates Heidegger's indebtedness to Yorck and Dilthey and gives further evidence to the view that thought about history is the germ cell of Being and Time. However, it also shows that Heidegger's commitment to Dilthey was not without reservations and that his analysis of Dasein actually employs Husserl's phenomenology. The work reopens the question of history in a broader sense, as Heidegger struggles to thematize history without aligning it with world-historical events. The text also provides a concise and readable summary of the main themes of Being and Time and as such is an ideal companion to that text.

The Columbia River Treaty A Primer
Free Download The Columbia River Treaty : A Primer By Robert William Sandford; Deborah Harford; Jon O'Riordan
2014 | 66 Pages | ISBN: 177160042X | EPUB | 1 MB
The Columbia River Treaty: A Primer is a vital work that clearly explains the nature of this complex water agreement between Canada and the United States and how its impending update will impact communities, landscapes, industry and water supplies between the two countries for many years to come. The Columbia River Treaty ratification in 1964 created the largest hydropower project in North America, with additional emphasis on flood protection for the USA. As the Treaty approaches its 60th anniversary, and the first opportunity for modification, its signatories are preparing proposals for new ways forward, and stakeholders on both sides of the border are speaking up. This primer explores the initial intent of the Treaty and its success to date, its costs to Columbia Basin residents and ecosystems, and new influences the signatories must now consider. Shifts in social norms related to the environment, equity and social justice, new views on the relevance of Indigenous traditional and local knowledge, and the economic and physical effects of a changing climate - are all considered as factors in future Treaty governance. The primer concludes with a summary of the perspectives that currently exist between and within each country with respect to Treaty benefits and outlines the next steps that will take place in the negotiation process. The authors conclude with a call to action, in the hope that a renewed Columbia River Treaty might prove a model for outstanding transboundary water agreements around the world as they strive to meet not only the challenges of the present day but also the needs of future generations.

The Coercive Community College Bullying and Its Costly Impact on the Mission to Serve Underrepresented Populations
Free Download The Coercive Community College : Bullying and Its Costly Impact on the Mission to Serve Underrepresented Populations By Leah P. Hollis; Leah P. Hollis
2016 | 193 Pages | ISBN: 1786355981 | EPUB | 1 MB
Few studies address workplace bullying in American higher education. Leah P.Hollis, EdD, author of Bully in the Ivory Tower addressed the issue of workplace bullying in four-year institutions. This volume replicates the study to reveal that 64% of community college respondents are affected by workplace bullying. Women, people of color, and the LGBT community face increased incidents of workplace bullying. This volume addresses topics like the impact of labor unions on higher education workplace bullying. This topic is timely as several unions are emerging for adjunct faculty nationally. Also, the volume offers a rare voice from the presidents' perspective on workplace bullying. The narratives show that even the president has a boss, and can be adversely affected by workplace bullying. For those learning about leadership, especially applied to community college, this volume offers ten case studies for discussion and consideration. The volume concludes with a "call to action" for community colleges that have an opportunity to create and maintain a healthy workplace. In turn, effective policy can stop the costly behavior that is eroding the community college mission.
