Since the 1980s, ambition has become the driving logic of our world. We're told that everyone has always wanted to ascend to the heights of their societies. We're told that we can achieve anything we set our minds to and overcome any obstacle to live out our fantasies. And we're told that if we fail, we have nothing to blame but ourselves.

Afterlives of the Garden Receptions of Epicurean Thought in the Early Empire and Late Antiquity
Free Download Gregson Davis, "Afterlives of the Garden: Receptions of Epicurean Thought in the Early Empire and Late Antiquity "
English | ISBN: 3111021920 | 2023 | 190 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
The collection of essays in this volume offers fresh insights into varied modalities of reception of Epicurean thought among Roman authors of the late Republican and Imperial eras. Its generic purview encompasses prose as well as poetic texts by both minor and major writers in the Latin literary canon, including the anonymous poems, Ciris and Aetna, and an elegy from the Tibullan corpus by the female poet, Sulpicia. Major figures include the Augustan poets, Vergil and Horace, and the late antique Christian theologian, Augustine. The method of analysis employed in the essays is uniformly interdisciplinary and reveals the depth of the engagement of each ancient author with major preoccupations of Epicurean thought, such as the balanced pursuit of erotic pleasure in the context of human flourishing and the role of the gods in relation to human existence. The ensemble of nuanced interpretations testifies to the immense vitality of the Epicurean philosophical tradition throughout Greco-Roman antiquity and thereby provides a welcome and substantial contribution to the burgeoning field of reception studies.

Afro-Americans in Antebellum Boston
Free Download Carol Buchalter Stapp, "Afro-Americans in Antebellum Boston "
English | ISBN: 1138878170 | 2018 | 336 pages | EPUB | 8 MB
First published in 1993. The probate records of antebellum black Bostonians offer an ideal opportunity to compare the literature to a primary source, both in terms of content and method. Critical reviews of the scholarship, first, on black social history and, then, on probate inventories as historic sources precede an examination of the probate records themselves and a comparison of the literature to probate records. The study concludes by indicating that the shortcomings of probate records arise from their leaving much mysterious or misunderstood without recourse to other sources while their strengths residei n their intimate and subtle suggestions for understanding a purportedly inarticulate population.

Afghanistan Aid, Armies and Empires
Free Download Peter Marsden, "Afghanistan: Aid, Armies and Empires "
English | ISBN: 1845117514 | 2009 | 240 pages | PDF | 2 MB
As the battle for Afghanistan intensifies, with humanitarian workers increasingly finding themselves on the frontline, aid expert Peter Marsden draws on decades of personal experience in the country to unravel the relationship between great power politics and development, from the Great Game era to the present day. Whilst the US has recently been criticised for blurring the distinctions between military and humanitarian operations, the use of aid to further great power strategic objectives is, Marsden finds, nothing new. Examining the interventions of the British in the 19th Century, the Soviets in 1979, and the US in 2001, he brings to light significant new information on the use of aid in pursuit of strategic objectives. Drawing on his own experience, he explains the changing relationship between the aid community and different Afghan governments, including the Taliban. His rigorously argued conclusions are surprising and make compelling reading matter for military and humanitarian policymakers alike.

The two sermons edited and translated here for the first time are primary material from the years before the establishment of the Fatimid caliphate in 297/909. The authors have been identified as Abu 'Abd Allah al-Shi'i and Abu'l-'Abbas Muhammad, two brothers who were central to the success of the Ismaili da'wa in North Africa. Da'wa, a term used to describe how Muslims teach others about the beliefs and practices of their Islamic faith, therefore provide a unique view of the nature and development of Islam throughout history. In this case, the primary texts shed light on the development of Islam among the Berbers of the Maghreb.

Aesthetics, Disinterestedness, and Effectiveness in Political Art
Free Download Maria-Alina Asavei, "Aesthetics, Disinterestedness, and Effectiveness in Political Art"
English | ISBN: 1498566790 | 2018 | 194 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Should politically concerned and engaged artistic production disregard questions or/and requirements of aesthetic reception and value? Whether art should be "aesthetic" or "political" is not a new question. Therefore, in spite of those several contemporary approaches of this issue, the answer is not set in stone and the debate is still going on. This volume aims to broaden these debates and it stems from numerous conversations with politically engaged artists and artist collectives on issues related to the "aesthetitzation of politics" versus the "politicization of art," as well as the phenomenon of the so-called "unhealthy aestheticism" in political art. Thus, this study has three interrelated aims: Firstly, it aims to offer an interdisciplinary account of the relationship between art and politics and between aesthetics and the political. Secondly, it attempts to explore what exactly makes artistic production a strong - yet neglected - field of political critique when democratic political agency, history from below and identity politics are threatened. Finally, to illuminate the relationship between critical political theory, on the one hand, and the philosophy of art, on the other by highlighting artworks' moral, political and epistemic abilities to reveal, criticize, problematize and intervene politically in our political reality.
