Women Travelers in Egypt From the Eighteenth to the Twenty-first Century
Free Download Deborah Manley, "Women Travelers in Egypt: From the Eighteenth to the Twenty-first Century"
English | ISBN: 9774164857 | 2012 | 256 pages | EPUB | 5 MB
Until late in the nineteenth century, few guide books acknowledged the presence of women as travelers - although women had been traveling around the world for centuries. Women's accounts of their journeys, distinct from those of male travelers, began to appear more frequently in the early nineteenth century, and Egypt was a popular destination. Women had more time to watch and describe and they spent time both in the harems of Cairo and with the women they met along the Nile. Some of them, like Sarah Belzoni, Sophia Poole, and Ellen Chennells, spoke Arabic. Others wrote engagingly of their experiences as observers of an exotic culture, with special access to some places no man could ever go.

Without Precedent Scripture, Tradition, and the Ordination of Women
Free Download Geoffrey Kirk, "Without Precedent: Scripture, Tradition, and the Ordination of Women"
English | ISBN: 1498230830 | 2016 | 178 pages | EPUB | 13 MB
Though the ordination of women has been hotly debated in a number of churches (and in particular in the world-wide Anglican Communion) there has been a strange silence on the subject from academic theologians. "They have left the debate," says the author of this book, "for the most part, to the also-rans." Without Precedent seeks to examine the arguments that, in the absence of serious academic contributions, have been advanced. In particular it looks at claims of ancient precedent for modern practice. What did Jesus think about women? Was Paul a misogynist or a feminist, a reactionary or a revolutionary? Does the role of Mary of Magdela, in scripture and tradition, offer any guidance (as many have claimed)? Were there female priests, and even bishops, in early Christianity? Extravagant claims have been made and repeated in all of these areas, and have crucially influenced decisions taken. This book provides, in the words of former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams: "a lucid and helpful survey, which quite rightly punctures some awful historical nonsense."

With Joyful Acceptance, Maybe
Free Download Molly Field James, "With Joyful Acceptance, Maybe"
English | ISBN: 1620322803 | 2013 | 256 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
In a world where advertisements lead us to hope for a life free from suffering, facing the reality of suffering can be a particular challenge. Yet the reality of suffering is one that we all face in the course of our lives. While Christianity often has the reputation of a tradition that promotes the idea that all suffering is good for you and makes you a better person, there is, in fact, much more variety and nuance to the tradition. While there are those who advocate a wholesale acceptance, there are others who question the source of suffering and call for it to be fought against. This book delves into the world of five theologians-Gregory the Great, Julian of Norwich, Jeremy Taylor, C. S. Lewis and Ivone Gebara-to understand their perspectives and draw on their approaches as a way of understanding what Christian responses to suffering look like. This book constructs a contemporary theology that affirms the importance of the call to combat unjust suffering through acts of love and mercy, while also affirming that acceptance of the reality of endemic suffering, found in all five theologians, can provide us with opportunities to grow spiritually, live more faithfully and to experience the blessings in the midst of suffering that are a foretaste of heavenly bliss.

Wisdom, Knowledge, and Spirituality in Self-defense A Rhetorical Exegetical Study of 1 Corinthians 1-6
Free Download Seth Kissi, "Wisdom, Knowledge, and Spirituality in Self-defense: A Rhetorical Exegetical Study of 1 Corinthians 1-6"
English | ISBN: 1532662300 | 2019 | 202 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Most of the challenges today's church is experiencing were experienced by the early church in New Testament times. Knowing this makes it possible to handle the challenges of today more effectively and in a way in which perplexity gives way to sober and informed attitudes. This book brings to the fore the role human sentiments within relational and ministerial dynamics play in creating problems of strife, rivalry, and unhealthy competition among leaders and members of the church, and provides opportunity to reflect on how to stem such negative tendencies. The study reveals the coherence of Paul's arguments in places where many existing commentaries find him digressing. Its focus on Paul's rhetorical strategies and the Greek text helps to clarify a number of issues that remain puzzles in many commentaries. The book also highlights clues in Paul's argument that indicate the direction, the interpretative frame, and the intended rhetorical effect of his arguments, avoiding the unhealthy imposition of general Pauline views on some statements in 1 Corinthians, as found in many books on the market. These, against insightful background in pluralism and complexity of wisdom, knowledge, oratory, persuasion, and inspiration, offer useful lenses that make Paul's argument consistently and coherently meaningful.

Wisdom From Africa Theological Reflections on the Confessions of St. Augustine
Free Download Ronald D. Burris, "Wisdom From Africa: Theological Reflections on the Confessions of St. Augustine"
English | ISBN: 1498279481 | 2016 | 176 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
This book offers an in-depth analysis and theological reflection on the thirteen books of Augustine's Confessions. It seeks to cover the major points raised by Augustine in his Confessions and discuss them in a way that will give insight and encouragement to the reader. This work does not propose to reflect on every section of every book of the Confessions, but rather to discuss the major points noted in each book. In addition, thoughtful questions are listed at the end of each chapter, to stimulate further discussion and hopefully encourage personal questions as well. Because Augustine's Confessions are an honest assessment of his failures as well as his final victory in Christ, there is something for everyone in the pages of this work.

Willy Brandt Life of a Statesman
Free Download Hélène Miard-Delacroix, "Willy Brandt: Life of a Statesman"
English | ISBN: 1784536881 | 2016 | 256 pages | PDF | 2 MB
He was at the forefront of some of Germany's most definitive and controversial decisions, in his role as the first Social Democrat Chancellor of West Germany between 1969 and 1974. In this period he paved the way for the eventual reunification of the country, as well as strengthening European integration in western Europe. In 1971, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for 'Ostpolitik', his policy of reconciliation with Germany's neighbours in the Eastern Bloc. During the treaty negotiations in Warsaw, he famously fell to his knees in recognition of the atrocities committed by his countrymen in the Warsaw Ghetto. This definitive new biography illuminates Brandt's personal life and political career, providing new perspectives on one of the leading statesmen of the twentieth century.
