Free Download Carlos Hoevel, "The University Under the Rule of Global Technocracy "
English | ISBN: 1032596430 | | pages | EPUB | 580 KB
This book explores the radical reform experienced by universities worldwide, as reformers, inspired by extreme economic thinking, seek to transform the university into part of a global academic industry. With attention to the implied passage from a focus on education and the advancement of knowledge, to an emphasis on the provision of human capital and economic benefits, the author describes the growing regulation of universities by the state, the substitution of academic government for business management and the implementation of quantitative measurement systems to replace the qualitative evaluation of teaching and research.

Free Download Graham Hassall, "The United Nations and the Pacific Islands "
English | ISBN: 3031341546 | 2023 | 348 pages | EPUB | 9 MB
This book critically examines the relationship between the United Nations Organization and the small states of the Pacific islands. It provides an in-depth coverage of the United Nations, coupled with how Pacific Small Island Developing States interact. It covers three themes, the first one being the position of the UN on the Pacific Islands, which examines the role of the many UN organs, agencies and programs in strengthening individual countries and the region as a whole. It examines the manner in which the UN's activities have benefited Pacific nations, territories and peoples. The second theme deals with the Pacific states in the UN, and examines the participation of Pacific nations and territories in the UN's various organs, agencies, and programmes. It analyses the contribution they have made to the effectiveness of the organization, as distinct from the benefits they have sought to gain from it. The third and last theme deals with small states in global public policy, taking a broader look at how small states are faring within the UN system in the age of global discourse on shared public goods/public policy concerns.

Free Download Haley McEwen, "The U.S. Christian Right and Pro-Family Politics in 21st Century Africa"
English | ISBN: 3031466527 | 2024 | 158 pages | EPUB | 412 KB
This book will address and uncover the role of US Christian Right 'pro-family' groups in mobilizing counter-movements against LGBTIQ+ human rights, reproductive justice, and sexuality education in Africa, and will intervene in the tendency to exceptionalize Africa as a 'homophobic continent' following the surge in homophobic and transphobic legislation, hate speech, and violence in recent years. The author employs the lens of decoloniality in an intersectional manner to unpack the multiple forms of hierarchy and oppression that the concept of the nuclear family has historically worked to naturalize in the interests of capitalism, Christo-normativity, and a world system dominated and controlled by the global north. Proceeding from the historical geopolitical context informing nuclear family idealization, the analysis then presents a critical discussion of contemporary pro-family discourses, showing that pro-family narratives that universalize and politicize the notion of 'family' arenot only constituting agendas that erode LGBTIQ+ and reproductive justice, but reinforce an international order that privileges Euro-American interests despite pro-family claims that their agendas are anti-imperialist. This book will be of interest to scholars in gender, sexuality, and queer studies; postcolonial studies; and international relations.

By combining empirical analysis of criminal investigations undertaken by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1983-2022 with narrative discussion of numerous related criminal prosecutions, it provides novel insights to help advance a stronger empirical understanding of how the administrative state protects victims of environmental harm, punishes environmental offenders, and aids in furthering the development of an environmental victimology.

Free Download James Goodman, "The Transformation of Academic Work: Fractured Futures? "
English | ISBN: 3031410335 | 2023 | 260 pages | EPUB | 602 KB
This book offers a unique grounded analysis of recent crises and transformations in academic work. It charts international and Australia-based efforts to overcome academic fragmentation and precarity, and to advance agendas for the public university. It is based on extensive qualitative interviews with academics and managers across several universities in Australia. It finds new grounds for 'universal' universities, with decent jobs, to serve the public good. The book is aimed at students and scholars from sociology, education, politics and industrial relations, and a wider readership concerned about the future of universities. Analysis centres on a trade union-led initiative in Australia aimed at decasualising universities, and ensuing debates about the impact of academic fragmentation. The authors argue for strengthening the teaching/research nexus as the foundation-stone for public purpose universities.
