Free Download Adam J. Goldwyn, "Homer, Humanism, Holocaust: Jewish Responses to the Crisis of Enlightenment During World War II"
English | ISBN: 3031114728 | 2022 | 161 pages | EPUB | 379 KB
This book examines how Jewish intellectuals during and after the Second World War reinterpreted Homer's epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, in light of their own wartime experiences, drawing a parallel between the ancient Greek genocide of the Trojans and the Nazi genocide of the Jews. The wartime writings of Theodore Adorno, Hannah Arendt, Erich Auerbach, Rachel Bespaloff, Hermann Broch, Max Horkheimer, Primo Levi, and others were attempts both to understand the collapse of European civilization and the Enlightenment through critiques of their foundational texts and to imagine the place of the Homeric epics in a new post-War humanism. The book thus also explores the reception of these writers, analyzing how Jewish child-survivors like Geoffrey Hartman and Hélène Cixous and writers of the post-Holocaust generation like Daniel Mendelsohn continued to read the epics as narratives of grief, trauma, and woundedness into the twenty-first century.

Free Download Lena Englund, "Home and Nation in Anglophone Autobiographies of Africa "
English | ISBN: 3031366352 | 2024 | 222 pages | EPUB | 407 KB
This book looks at contemporary autobiographical works by writers with African backgrounds in relation to the idea of 'place'. It examines eight authors' works - Helen Cooper's The House at Sugar Beach, Sisonke Msimang's Always Another Country, Leila Ahmed's A Border Passage, Noo Saro-Wiwa's Looking for Transwonderland, Douglas Rogers's The Last Resort, Elamin Abdelmahmoud's Son of Elsewhere, Clemantine Wamariya and Elizabeth Weil's The Girl Who Smiled Beads and Aminatta Forna's autobiographical writing - to argue that place is particularly central to personal narrative in texts whose authors have migrated multiple times. Spanning Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Egypt, Rwanda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, this book interrogates the label 'African' writing which has been criticized for ignoring local contexts. It demonstrates how in their works these writers seek to reconnect with a bygone 'Africa', often after complex experiences of political upheavals and personal loss. The chapters also provide in-depth analyses of key concepts related to place and autobiography: place and privilege, place and trauma, and the relationship between place and nation.

Free Download David John Dickson, "Holocaust Fiction and the Question of Impiety"
English | ISBN: 303112393X | 2022 | 269 pages | EPUB | 389 KB
This book discusses the issues underlying contemporary Holocaust fiction. Using Gillian Rose's theory of Holocaust piety, it argues that, rather than enhancing our understanding of the Holocaust, contemporary fiction has instead become overly focused on gratuitous representations of bodies in pain. The book begins by discussing the locations and imagery which have come to define our understanding of the Holocaust, before then highlighting how this gradual simplification has led to an increasing sense of emotional distance from the historical past. Holocaust fiction, the book argues, attempts to close this emotional and temporal distance by creating an emotional connection to bodies in pain. Using different concepts relating to embodied experience - from Sonia Kruks' notion of feeling-with to Alison Landsberg's prosthetic memory - the book analyses several key examples of Holocaust literature and film to establish whether fiction still possesses the capacity to approach the Holocaustimpiously.

Free Download Aaron Bielejewski, "Holding down the Fort: Policing Communities and Community-Oriented Policing in Rural Germany"
English | ISBN: 3658397721 | 2023 | 428 pages | EPUB | 765 KB
This Open-Access-book questions the relationship between institutionalized images and understandings of policing - the monolithic ideas common to most, if not all, Western law enforcement agencies - and contextual, situative, and local interactions where the human representatives of policing - street-level officers - come into contact with residents. The political and theoretical association of specific forms of "Western" policing with democratic society can be illustrated in the case of German integration: narratives of reform and essentially forging new democratic police agencies in the "new German states" stand at odds with much of the experience and statements of officers who continued to serve following (Re)Unification. Officers who present their works primarily in terms of their local responsibilities, expectations and more specifically to their unique and individual relationship and connection to their communities downplay the relevance of high-level policing policy. Based ona two-year ethnographic study of policing in a rural county in the German state of Brandenburg, this book explores the local nature of policing both in terms of how police officers imagine their communities to be and with reference to broader societal expectations and assumptions of what police, essentially, are, can effectively do, and should effectively do.

Free Download Paul Weller, "Hizmet in Transitions: European Developments of a Turkish Muslim-Inspired Movement"
English | ISBN: 3030937976 | 2022 | 274 pages | EPUB | 431 KB
In this open-access monograph, Paul Weller explores how the movement known as Hizmet (meaning "service") is undergoing a period of transitions in Europe. Inspired by the teaching and practice of the Turkish Islamic scholar, Fethullah Gülen, Hizmet has been active in Europe (and other continents) for several decades. It has always been subject to some degree of contestation, which has intensified following the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey, for which the current Turkish government holds Fethullah Gülen and Hizmet as responsible - a claim they strongly deny. In Turkey, thousands of people associated with Hizmet have been imprisoned. In Europe, pressures have been brought to bear on the movement and its activities. In charting a way forward, Hizmet finds itself in a significant transitional period, the nature and possible future trajectories of which are explored in this volume. The book is informed by a comprehensive literature review and a recent research project which includes primary research interviews with key Hizmet figures in Europe and beyond. It contends that to properly understand Hizmet in Europe, one has to situate it in its interactive engagement both with its diverse European national contexts and with Fethullah Gülen's teaching and practice.
