Free Download The Politics of Being Mortal By Alfred G. Killilea
2014 | 183 Pages | ISBN: 0813152879 | EPUB | 1 MB
While much has been written in recent years on death and dying, there has been little treatment of how people cope with death in the absence of religious belief, and virtually no examination of the potential political repercussions of a wider acceptance of mortality in American society. Alfred Killilea's strikingly original book revolves around a central irony: though the subject of death has been largely shunned in American culture lest it rob life of meaning and contentment, confronting death may be crucial to enable us as individuals and as a society to affirm life, even to survive, in this nuclear age. Killilea argues that the denial of death has fostered a disavowal of limits in general, and that a greater awareness of our mortality would provide a much needed catalyst for change in our political response to narcissism and nuclearism. He traces how, from John Locke to the present, a politics and an economics based on growth for the sake of growth have required an avoidance of human vulnerability. Our confrontation with mortality, Killilea argues, would goad us to question our roles as mere acquirers and to take more seriously the need for equality and community in our society. In charting how we can come to terms with death and how profoundly our attitudes toward death affect our attitudes toward politics, Killilea vides lucid and authoritative commentaries on such provocative thinkers as Earnest Becker, Robert Jay Lifton, Michael Novak, Daniel Bell, Christopher Lasch, and Jonathan Schell. Scholars in many fields as well as interested lay readers will find the treatment of these issues and thinkers compelling. This easily accessible book is an urgent reminder that the most valuable spur to the examined life extolled by Socrates is the knowledge that we will die.

Free Download The Plausibility of Policy : Case Studies from the Social Domain By Vasco Lub
2015 | 128 Pages | ISBN: 9462364699 | PDF | 1 MB
The social domain has seen a growing debate on the effectiveness of public measures. The realization is taking shape that the legitimacy of social policies - such as the socialization of vulnerable groups, anti-radicalization programs, or regeneration projects in deprived neighborhoods - has to go beyond the intuition that they "should" work. But, unlike methods in spheres such as medicine and healthcare, social programs typically have no sharp demarcation in time, intensity, or target group, and are implemented in a rich context of unforeseen and unknown variables. This makes it difficult (if not impossible) to assess their impact with research methods that centralize a mono causal effect. In The Plausibility of Policy, author Vasco Lub presents alternative approaches to assessing the likelihood of social policy measures achieving their intended effects. One of his main lines of argument is to confront policy assumptions with existing scientific data. In doing so, he sheds light on how such measures can be assessed and to what degree claims about those intended effects can be substantiated. [Subject: Social Policy, Public Administration]

Free Download The Persistence of the Ideological Lie: The Totalitarian Impulse Then and Now by Daniel J. Mahoney
English | April 15, 2025 | ISBN: 1641773731 | True EPUB | 168 pages | 0.5 MB
The Ideological Lie,as Solzhenitsyn calls it, was born when modern revolutionaries replaced the age-old distinction between good and evil with the illusory distinction between progress and reaction. In the name of progress, evil was called goodness, and goodness in the form of wise restraint was labeled evil, backward, racist, colonialist, sexist, etc.
Jacobinism, Marxism-Leninism, National Socialism, Progressive Democracy, the New Left, and now the new woke dispensation have all iterated upon this central conceit. Their adherents were all frenziedly preoccupied with being on "the right side of history"-the side of "progress."

Free Download The People's Voice : The Orator in American Society By Barnet Baskerville
2014 | 270 Pages | ISBN: 0813151139 | EPUB | 1 MB
In this flavorful and perceptive study of the American orator, Barnet Baskerville makes an inquiry into American attitudes toward orators and oratory and the reflection of these attitudes in speaking practices. He examines the role of the orator in society and the kinds or qualities of oratory that were dominant in each period of American history, and he looks into the nature and importance of oratory as perceived by audiences and by speakers themselves. By examining this "public image" of the orator, the author is able to tell us much about the people who drew that image.

Free Download The Pear Genome by Schuyler S. Korban
English | EPUB | 2019 | 315 Pages | ISBN : 3030110478 | 141.1 MB
Addressing the pear genome, this book covers the current state of knowledge regarding genetic and genomic resources, breeding approaches and strategies, as well as cutting-edge content on how these tools and resources are being / soon will be utilized to pursue genetic improvement efforts that will combine fruit quality, high productivity, precocious fruit bearing, and long postharvest storage life, along with elevated levels of resistance to various major diseases and insect pests. Throughout, the book also explores potential opportunities and challenges in genomic analysis, sequence assembly, structural features, as well as functional studies that will assist in future genetic improvement efforts for pears. The pear (Pyrus), an important tree fruit crop, is grown worldwide, and has several economically relevant cultivars. In recent years, modern genetic and genomic tools have resulted in the development of a wide variety of valuable resources for the pear. In the past few years, completion of whole genome assemblies of 'Dangshansuli', an Asian pear, and 'Bartlett', a European pear, have paved the way for new discoveries regarding for example, the pear's genomic structure, chromosome evolution, and patterns of genetic variation. This wealth of new resources will have a major impact on our knowledge of the pear genome; in turn, these resources and knowledge will have significant impacts on future genetic improvement efforts

Free Download The Pattern of Change: A Mathematical and Philosophical Study of How We See the World
English | 2025 | ISBN: 1009546511 | 601 Pages | PDF | 66 MB
One of life's most fundamental revelations is change. Presenting the fascinating view that pattern is the manifestation of change, this unique book explores the science, mathematics, and philosophy of change and the ways in which they have come to inform our understanding of the world. Through discussions on chance and determinism, symmetry and invariance, information and entropy, quantum theory and paradox, the authors trace the history of science and bridge the gaps between mathematical, physical, and philosophical perspectives. Change as a foundational concept is deeply rooted in ancient Chinese thought, and this perspective is integrated into the narrative throughout, providing philosophical counterpoints to customary Western thought. Ultimately, this is a book about ideas. Intended for a wide audience, not so much as a book of answers, but rather an introduction to new ways of viewing the world.

What can Almodóvar's work tell us about the quest for self-knowledge―for understanding who we are and who we might yet become?
