Free Download Nation-Building, State and the Genderframing of Women's Rights in the United Arab Emirates By Vania Carvalho Pinto
2010 | 155 Pages | ISBN: 1859642632 | EPUB | 1 MB
The extensive changes to Emirati women's traditional rights and roles have been one of the most visible transformations taking place in the United Arab Emirates throughout its almost forty years of modern history. This book offers an interpretation of why and how these modifications came about. Its aim is to analyse the promotion of educational, employment and political rights for women as strategic state actions set within a context of broader nation-building goals. The author discovers that there is no direct or easy link between the state's 'offer of rights' for women, and society's acceptance of them. This is particularly so when proposed changes raise deep issues about honour and respectability, and are quite removed from dominant gender norms and accepted traditions. Given these circumstances, the mechanisms that induce women to actually take advantage of what is offered have not been given sufficient attention. The concept of 'genderframing' aims precisely at defining that 'connecting mechanism', and explaining the successes and failures of these policies both mobilization- and implementation-wise. Elaborating on the sociological method of examination known as 'framing', the term 'genderframing' refers to a dynamic and interactive process between the state and its population which entails the symbolic rework of meanings associated to women-related policies, and its subsequent presentation in novel ways. It is argued that such re-interpretation has been purposefully conducted by the Emirati State in order to portray the changing roles of women as necessary and desirable, for reasons associated to nation-building purposes, religious conformity, promotion of family values, and efforts at indigenous cultural preservation. By examining the creation, deployment and modifications to the Emirati genderframe, this book highlights the profound intertwining between gender, nation building, and domestic socio-political dynamics in a country that, while seeking to establish its modernizing credentials, is still struggling for self-definition and empowerment.

Free Download Multi-variant User Interfaces in E-commerce: A Practical Approach to UI Personalization (Progress in IS) by Adam Wasilewski
English | September 19, 2024 | ISBN: 3031677579 | 148 pages | MOBI | 6.51 Mb
This book focuses on the personalisation of the user interface in e-commerce based on collected data on customer behaviour. While product recommendation systems are widely used for this purpose today, they do not allow for a comprehensive adaptation of the layout to different user groups. The proposed approach is based on the conclusion that since e-commerce customers are different, the user interface should also be different. To make this possible, several components need to be combined, which together allow the design of the online shop to be automatically or expertly adapted to the customer's choices and behaviour. It presents and discusses a framework that allows data to be collected, processed and used to optimise UI variants for generated customer segments. The proposed approach has been verified in practice and further developed on this basis, so that the reader is presented with a solution that is not riddled with 'baby age' problems, and the limitations and challenges identified are described and commented on in detail. Typical e-commerce systems currently have a single UI for all customers. The implementation of multi-variant UIs therefore represents an opportunity for companies to create a marketing advantage by addressing the personalisation trends in e-commerce.

Populism has become a global movement associated with nationalism and strong-man politicians, but its root causes remain elusive. Mud, Blood, and Ghosts exposes one deep root in the soil of the American Great Plains. Julie Carr traces her own family's history through archival documents to draw connections between U.S. agrarian populism, spiritualism, and eugenics, helping readers to understand populism's tendency toward racism and exclusion.

Free Download Moscow and the Non-Russian Republics in the Soviet Union (BASEES/Routledge Series on Russian and East European Studies) by Saulius Grybkauskas, Li Bennich-Björkman
English | December 14, 2021 | ISBN: 103215540X | 250 pages | PDF | 7.65 Mb
This book examines what came to determine the local power and character of the Communist party-state at the level of the national non-Russian republics. It discusses how, although the Soviet Union looked centralised and monolithic to outsiders, local party-states formed their own fiefdoms and had very considerable influence over many policies areas within their republics. It argues that local party-states were shaped by two decisive relationships - to the central Communist party in Moscow and to local constituencies, especially to the local intelligentsia and the creative professions who constituted the local party-states' biggest potential adversaries. It shows how local party-states negotiated stability and their own survival, and contends that the effects of "Sovietisation" continue to be felt in the independent states which succeeded the republics, particularly in the field of the relationship with Moscow, which remains of immense importance to these countries.

Free Download Alastair Norcross, "Morality by Degrees: Reasons without Demands"
English | ISBN: 0198844999 | 2020 | 170 pages | PDF | 868 KB
In Morality by Degrees, Alastair Norcross articulates and defends a radical new approach to ethical theory. Consequentialist theories of the right connect the rightness and wrongness (and related notions) of actions with the intrinsic goodness and badness of states of affairs consequential on those actions. The most popular such theory is maximization, which is said to demand of agents that they maximize the good, that they do the best they can, at all times. Thus it may seem that consequentialist theories are overly demanding, and, relatedly, that they cannot accommodate the phenomenon of going above and beyond the demands of duty. However, a clear understanding of consequentialism leaves no room for a theory of the right, at least not at the fundamental level of the theory. A consequentialist theory, such as utilitarianism, is a theory of how to rank outcomes, and derivatively actions, which provides reasons for choosing some actions over others. It is thus a purely scalar theory, with no demands that certain actions be performed, and no fundamental classification of actions as right or wrong. However, such notions may have pragmatic benefits at the level of application, since many people find it easier to guide their conduct by simple commands, rather than to think in terms of reasons of varying strength to do one thing rather than another. A contextualist semantics for various terms, such as "right", "permissible", "harm", when combined with the scalar approach to consequentialism, allows for the expression of truth-apt propositions with sentences containing such terms.

Free Download Misapplying Globalization : Jordan and the Intellectual Property Policy Challenge By Faris K. Nesheiwat
2013 | 207 Pages | ISBN: 1443851639 | PDF | 1 MB
In the space of only a few years, the Jordanian legal system was transformed from an Ottoman-era regime which made few provisions for intellectual property rights to one which incorporated all the provisions of TRIPS. The TRIPS principles, designed to protect the interests of multinational media and technology companies, thereby became grafted onto the legal architecture of a developing country which lacked judicial expertise on intellectual property, and whose population was culturally averse to recognizing such rights. This book provides a detailed study of this transformation, and the ideological and financial pressures which brought it about. The book argues that the standards for IP protection have been elevated beyond the level at which Jordan is able to enforce compliance. This is damaging Jordan's legal institutions, generating ill-will towards international legal norms, and foreclosing possibilities of innovation via imitation that could bring economic benefits to Jordan, the Middle East, and to the global economy. This is the first detailed study of the impact of TRIPS on a Middle Eastern country, and will be of both academic and practical relevance to all who are interested in intellectual property rights, development, international law, globalization, and the Middle East.
