Free Download James Tenney, "From Scratch: Writings in Music Theory"
English | ISBN: 025203872X | 2015 | 504 pages | AZW3 | 7 MB
One of the twentieth century's most important musical thinkers, James Tenney did pioneering work in multiple fields, including computer music, tuning theory, and algorithmic and computer-assisted composition. From Scratch arranges, edits, and revises Tenney's hard-to-find writings into one indispensable collection. Selections focus on his fundamental concerns-"what the ear hears"-and include thoughts and ideas on perception and form, tuning systems and especially just intonation, information theory, theories of harmonic space, and stochastic (chance) procedures of composition.

Free Download From Human Attention to Computational Attention: A Multidisciplinary Approach
English | 2025 | ISBN: 3031842995 | 590 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 77 MB
The new edition of this popular book introduces the study of attention, focusing on attention modeling, and addressing such themes as saliency models, signal detection, and different types of signals, including real-life applications. The first edition was written at a moment when the Deep Learning Neural Network (DNNs) techniques were just at their beginnings in terms of attention. Deep learning has recently become a key factor in attention prediction on images and video, and attention mechanisms have become key factors in deep learning models. The second edition tackles the arrival of DNNs for attention computing in images and video, and also discusses the attention mechanisms within DNNs (attention modules, transformers, grad-cam-based saliency maps, etc.). From Human Attention to Computational Attention 2nd Edition also explores the parallels between the brain structures and the DNN architectures to reveal how biomimetics can improve the model designs. The book is truly multi-disciplinary, collating work from psychology, neuroscience, engineering, and computer science.

Free Download Joshua Davis, "From Head Shops to Whole Foods: The Rise and Fall of Activist Entrepreneurs "
English | ISBN: 0231171587 | 2017 | 336 pages | AZW3 | 47 MB
In the 1960s and '70s, a diverse range of storefronts―including head shops, African American bookstores, feminist businesses, and organic grocers―brought the work of the New Left, Black Power, feminism, environmentalism, and other movements into the marketplace. Through shared ownership, limited growth, and democratic workplaces, these activist entrepreneurs offered alternatives to conventional profit-driven corporate business models. By the middle of the 1970s, thousands of these enterprises operated across the United States―but only a handful survive today. Some, such as Whole Foods Market, have abandoned their quest for collective political change in favor of maximizing profits.

Free Download Paul A. Montagna, "Freshwater Inflows to Texas Bays and Estuaries: A Regional-Scale Review, Synthesis, and Recommendations "
English | ISBN: 3031708814 | 2025 | 421 pages | EPUB | 153 MB
Estuaries are defined by mixing of river and sea water, thus freshwater inflow is a key driver of estuary ecosystem structure and function. While there is much concern about water quality, there is much less about water quantity. As water is diverted for human use, less is flowing to the coast, which threatens estuary ecosystems. Some jurisdictions are now setting inflow standards, but there is no consensus on how to identify how much freshwater an estuary needs. There is a climatic gradient along the northwestern Gulf of Mexico coast and estuaries vary from hydrologically positive to neutral to negative, and this makes the Texas coast the ideal place to study how ecological processes vary with freshwater inflow. An estuary comparison approach is used in this open access work to examine hydrology, circulation, salinity, nutrients, carbonate, dissolved oxygen, plankton, nekton, benthos, and habitat dynamics and responses across varying hydrological regimes.

To survive baling out from a doomed aircraft or a crash-landing in enemy occupied territory certainly required a large element of luck. To then manage to return to Allied shores inevitably needed considerably more good fortune and often the assistance of local patriots and resistance workers.
