Free Download The Genesis of an American Superpower: Nation and Society, 1945-1952
English | 2026 | ISBN: 1032542683 | 311 Pages | PDF EPUB (True) | 34 MB
American society, culture, economy and politics were all transformed in the postwar era, as an abundant society evolved and confronted crucial issues such as coping with the nuclear age and addressing civil rights. During the presidency of Harry Truman, the United States undertook the reconstruction of Europe, the occupation of Germany and Japan, participated in the judicial prosecution of war criminals and instituted the policies and agencies necessary to confront the expansion of Soviet power as the Cold War took shape. The structure of a modern national security state began to form as the military was reorganized to accommodate the possible use of nuclear weapons and combat newly arisen threats. Alongside analyzing the historical, political and economic developments that led to America's dramatic transformation, each chapter also sheds light on key figures of the era including Eleanor Roosevelt, Humphrey Bogart and Bayard Rustin.

Free Download Dora Kostakopoulou, "The Future Governance of Citizenship "
English | ISBN: 0521877997 | 2008 | 240 pages | PDF | 993 KB
In much of the citizenship literature it is often considered, if not simply assumed, that citizenship is integral to the character of a self-determining community and that this process, by definition, involves the exclusion of resident 'foreigners'. Dora Kostakopoulou calls this assumption into question, arguing that 'aliens' are by definition outside the bounds of the community by virtue of a circular reasoning which takes for granted the existence of bounded national communities, and that this process of collective self-definition is deeply political and historically dated. Although national citizenship has enjoyed a privileged position in both theory and practice, its remarkable elasticity has reached its limit, thereby making it more important to find an alternative model. Kostakopoulou develops a new institutional framework for anational citizenship, which can be grafted onto the existing state system, defends it against objections and proposes institutional reform based on an innovative approach to citizenship.

Free Download Henry E. Hale, "The Foundations of Ethnic Politics: Separatism of States and Nations in Eurasia and the World "
English | ISBN: 0521894948 | 2008 | 296 pages | PDF | 2 MB
Despite implicating ethnicity in everything from civil war to economic failure, researchers seldom consult psychological research when addressing the most basic question: What is ethnicity? The result is a radical scholarly divide generating contradictory recommendations for solving ethnic conflict. Research into how the human brain actually works demands a revision of existing schools of thought. At its foundation, ethnic identity is a cognitive uncertainty-reduction device with special capacity to exacerbate, but not cause, collective action problems. This produces a new general theory of ethnic conflict that can improve both understanding and practice. A deep study of separatism in the USSR and CIS demonstrates the theory's potential, mobilizing evidence from elite interviews, three local languages, and mass surveys. The outcome is a significant reinterpretation of nationalism's role in the USSR's breakup, which turns out to have been a far more contingent event than commonly recognized. International relations in the CIS are similarly cast in new light.

Free Download The Foundations of Acoustics: Basic Mathematics and Basic Acoustics by Eugen Skudrzyk
English | PDF | 1971 | 816 Pages | ISBN : 3709182573 | 111.3 MB
Research and scientific progress are based upqn intuition coordinated with a wide theoretical knowledge, experimental skill, and a realistic sense of the limitations of technology. Only a deep insight into physical phenomena will supply the necessary skills to handle the problems that arise in acoustics. The acoustician today needs to be well acquainted with mathematics, dynamics, hydrodynamics, and physics; he also needs a good knowledge of statistics, signal processing, electrical theory, and of many other specialized subjects. Acquiring this background is a laborious task and would require the study of many different books. It is the goal of this volume to present this background in as thorough and readable a manner as possible so that the reader may turn to specialized publications or chapters of other books for further information without having to start at the preliminaries. In trying to accomplish this goal, mathematics serves only as a tool; the better our understanding of a physical phenomenon, the less mathematics is needed and the shorter and more concise are our computa tions. A word about the choice of subjects for this volume will be helpful to the reader. Even scientists of high standing are frequently not acquainted with the fundamentals needed in the field of acoustics. Chapters I to IX are devoted to these fundamentals. After studying Chapter I, which dis cusses the units and their relationships, the reader should have no difficulty converting from one system of units to any other.
