English | ISBN: 0872072681 | 2002 | 376 pages | PDF | 14 MB
At a time when long-treasured forms of the printed word compete with technology for the time and attention of children and adolescents, it is critical for teachers to help students respond to the written word and to master the craft of writing. Perspectives on Writing provides a foundation for the design of more effective classroom practice for teaching reading and writing. This volume brings together the contributions of several prominent scholars, who present significant theory and research on the development of writing, writing and reading relationships, the development of competence, classroom practice, and the assessment of writing. You'll also find a review of literature on class size, including IRA's resolution on the issue, and a recommended reading list with an annotated bibliography.

Free Download Marie-Claire Foblets, "Personal Autonomy in Plural Societies: A Principle and its Paradoxes "
English | ISBN: 0367884496 | 2020 | 302 pages | PDF | 1455 KB
This volume addresses the exercise of personal autonomy in contemporary situations of normative pluralism. In the Western liberal tradition, from a strictly legal and theoretical perspective the social individual has the right to exercise the autonomy of his or her will. In a context of legal plurality, however, personal autonomy becomes more complicated. Can and should personal autonomy be recognized as a legal foundation for protecting a person's freedom to renounce what others view as his or her fundamental 'human rights'? This collection develops an interdisciplinary conceptual framework to address these questions and presents empirical studies examining the gap between the principle of personal autonomy and its implementation. In a context of cultural diversity, this gap manifests itself in two particular ways. First, not every culture gives the same pre-eminence to personal autonomy when examining the legal effects of an individual's acts. Second, in a society characterized by 'weak pluralism', the legal assessment of personal autonomy often favours the views of the dominant majority. In highlighting these diverse perspectives and problematizing the so-called 'guardian function' of human rights, i.e., purporting to protect weaker parties by limiting their personal autonomy in the name of gender equality, fair trial, etc., this book offers a nuanced approach to the principle of autonomy and addresses the questions of whether it can effectively be deployed in situations of internormativity and what conditions must be met in order to ensure that it is not rendered devoid of all meaning.

Persian Carpets: the Nation As a Transnational Commodity tracks the Persian carpet as an exotic and mythological object, as a commodity, and as an image from mid-nineteenth-century England to contemporary Iran and the Iranian diaspora. Following the journey of this single object, the book brings issues of labor into conversation with the politics of aesthetics. It focuses on the carpet as a commodity which crosses the boundaries of private and public, religious and secular, culture and economy, modern and traditional, home and diaspora, and art and commodity to tell the story of transnational interconnectivity.

Free Download Sarah Hannan, "Permissible Progeny?: The Morality of Procreation and Parenting"
English | ISBN: 0199378118 | 2015 | 288 pages | EPUB | 418 KB
This volume contributes to the growing literature on the morality of procreation and parenting. About half of the chapters take up questions about the morality of bringing children into existence. They discuss the following questions: Is it wrong to create human life? Is there a connection between the problem of evil and the morality of procreation? Could there be a duty to procreate? How do the environmental harms imposed by procreation affect its moral status? Given these costs, is the value of establishing genetic ties ever significant enough to render procreation morally permissible? And how should government respond to peoples' motives for procreating?

Free Download Lawrence T. McDonnell, "Performing Disunion: The Coming of the Civil War in Charleston, South Carolina "
English | ISBN: 1107184932 | 2018 | 568 pages | PDF | 10 MB
This book traces how and why the secession of the South during the American Civil War was accomplished at ground level through the actions of ordinary men. Adopting a micro-historical approach, Lawrence T. McDonnell works to connect small events in new ways - he places one company of the secessionist Minutemen in historical context, exploring the political and cultural dynamics of their choices. Every chapter presents little-known characters whose lives and decisions were crucial to the history of Southern disunion. McDonnell asks readers to consider the past with fresh eyes, analyzing the structure and dynamics of social networks and social movements. He presents the dissolution of the Union through new events, actors, issues, and ideas, illuminating the social contradictions that cast the South's most conservative city as the radical heart of Dixie.
