Free Download People of the City: Jews and the Urban Challenge By Ezra Mendelsohn
2000 | 288 Pages | ISBN: 0195134680 | PDF | 1 MB
The Jews have been an urban people par excellence, and their influence on the urban landscape is unmistakable. Who can imagine modern Vienna, Berlin, Warsaw, or New York, to name just a few examples, without their large, vibrant, and creative Jewish populations? Conversely, the urban experience has been a decisive factor in modern Jewish history. This new volume in the acclaimed Studies in Contemporary Jewry series is devoted to the theme of Jews and the modern city. It features essays on Orthodox Jewry in the city, Jewish-Christian relations, klezmer music, the impact of urbanization on German Jewry, the Jewish communities in New York and St. Petersburg, and the emergence of the first ''Hebrew City'' (Tel-Aviv). It also includes a discussion of the new prayer book of the Conservative movement in Israel. Like others in the series, this book presents current scholarship in the form of a symposium, essays, and book reviews by distinguished experts in Jewish studies from around the world. Published annually by the Avraham Harman Institute of Contemporary Jewry at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Studies in Contemporary Jewry continues to be an invaluable resource for scholars of modern history and culture.

Free Download Pediatric Psychopharmacology Evidence: A Clinician's Guide by Boris Lorberg
English | October 13, 2024 | ISBN: 3031574710 | 613 pages | MOBI | 5.37 Mb
This book is a comprehensive guide to pediatric psychopharmacology, detailing medications used to treat a wide variety of childhood and adolescent mental illnesses. Childhood and adolescence represent critically important life stages in cognitive, social, and emotional development. Unfortunately, the prevalence of mental illness has been growing over the last several decades, especially among children. It is estimated that suicide is the second most common cause of death among adolescents and young adults in the United States. A crucial component of evidence-based mental health treatment of youth consists of careful, sophisticated, and compassionate medication treatment. This guide is divided into 18 chapters, with most covering the medications used to treat a specific disorder or group of disorders. Chapters comprehensively cover each medication's history, FDA indication status and context, representation in the media, mechanism, extent of usage and research, and quality of evidence supporting its efficacy and safety. Chapters also cover approaches clinicians can use to discuss medications with patients―including alternative treatment options and integrating patient-level variables when choosing a medication. This book focuses on understanding patient and family perspectives on medication with suggested clinician responses to better communicate about prescription management. Chapters also include tables and figures, list resources and guidelines, and discuss controversies in the media.

Free Download James Page, "Peace Education: Exploring Ethical and Philosophical Foundations"
English | 2008 | ISBN: 1593118899 | PDF | pages: 127 | 11.3 mb
Peace education is now well recognized within international legal instruments and within critical educational literature as an important aspect of education. Despite this, little attention has been given in the critical literature to the philosophical foundations for peace education and the rationale for peace education thus remains substantially an assumed one. This investigation explores some possible ethico-philosophical foundations for peace education, through an examination of five specific ethical traditions: 1) virtue ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as a virtue, and/or virtue is interpreted as peacefulness, and peace education as education in that virtue; 2) consequentialist ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as education regarding the consequences of our action and inaction, both as individuals and collectivities; 3) conservative political ethics, whereby peace education may be interpreted as emphasizing the importance of the evolution of social institutions and the importance of ordered and lawful social change; 4) aesthetic ethics, whereby peace may be interpreted as something beautiful and valuable in itself, and peace education as emphasizing the importance of that beauty and value; and 5) the ethics of care, whereby care may be interpreted as a core element in peace, and peace education as encouraging trust and engagement with the other. The study addresses major contributions to each of these ethical traditions, the strengths and weaknesses of the tradition, and the ways in which the tradition provides support for peace education. It is argued in the thesis that each tradition provides only a partial basis for peace education, and that ultimately a holistic and integrative understanding is required, one that encourages a culture of peace.
