Free Download Muslim Youth in Southeast Asia (New Directions in Islam) by Mohd Al Adib Samuri, Peter Hopkins
English | November 21, 2025 | ISBN: 9819533686 | 156 pages | True ePUB, PDF | 5.50 Mb
This Palgrave Pivot book explores the lived experiences of Muslim youth growing up in Southeast Asia. Young Muslims in this region remain under-researched even though Southeast Asia's Muslim community is larger than that of the Middle East. Drawing upon original research, the contributions chart the lives and interests of Muslim youth, drawing attention to key domains of young people's lives, ranging from social media, popular culture, and music through to questions about political engagement, the politics of the veil, and the intersections between religion and economy. This collection brings together some of the key established scholars in the field, as well as emerging researchers, with several being based in Southeast Asia. This volume is a crucial intervention for scholars and students interested in youth studies, sociology of religion, Islamic studies, Southeast Asian culture, and social geography.

Free Download Moshe Gammer - Muslim Resistance to the Tsar: Shamil and the Conquest of Chechnia and Daghestan
Frank Cass & Co. Ltd. | 1994 | ISBN: 071463431X | English | 452 pages | PDF | 150.35 MB
This book is a splendid analysis of the Russian conquest of Chechnya and Daghestan between the late 1820s and early 1850s. Its central theme is the collision between imperial Russia and the Muslim peoples of the Caucasus. Gammer traces the origins of the 'Islamic revival' that occurred in the Caucasus in the second quarter of the nineteenth century and shows how, under the leadership of Imam Shamil, that revival assumed a military dimension that challenged Russia's presence in the region. Gammer insists that Shamil and his followers were by no means the 'fanatics' or 'terrorists' imagined by the Russians. He argues that Shamil was a genuine believer in God and in Islamic law; that Shamil first sought accommodation with the Russians but soon became aware that the Russians were only interested in establishing imperial hegemony in the region; that Shamil was a shrewd politician who very nearly succeeded in unifying the ethnically diverse peoples of Chechnya and Daghestan under a common Islamic banner. The book is based on profound scholarship, but it is written in a lively narrative style. The text is accompanied by helpful maps and suggestive illustrations. Although Gammer's book focuses on the nineteenth century, its subject is timely in light of the two recent wars between post-Soviet Russia and the Chechens who, since Shamil's rebellion, may never have accepted Russian rule.

Free Download Moving Targets: Elliott-Automation and the Dawn of the Computer Age in Britain, 1947 - 67 (History of Computing) By Simon Lavington
2011 | 710 Pages | ISBN: 1848829329 | PDF | 15 MB
The Elliott-Automation company was an active participant in the birth of the information agein Britain. By 1961, the company was supplying 50% of the digital computers delivered to UK customers in that year. Yet by the end of that decade, Elliott-Automation had effectively disappeared in a flurry of takeovers, leaving little apparent trace of the technical excellence that had once characterised the name Elliott.Moving Targetscharts the gradual take-up of information technology in Britain, as seen through the eyes of one innovative company. The book examines how the dawn of the digital computer age in Britain took place at various times for different applications, from early government-sponsored work on secret defence projects, to the growth of the market for Elliott computers for civil applications.Topics and features:Charts the establishment of Elliott's Borehamwood Research Laboratories in 1946, and the roles played by John Coales and Leon Bagrit in reviving an ailing companyExamines early Elliott digital computers designed for classified military applications and for GCHQ, such as the Elliott 152, 153 and OEDIPUSDescribes the analogue computers developed by Elliott-Automation, including the giant TRIDACReviews the development of the first commercial Elliott computers, the growth of applications in industrial automation, and the competition offered by rival manufacturers in BritainIncludes a history of airborne computers up to 1988, written by a former director of Elliott Flight AutomationDiscusses the evolution of computer architectures and systems software for the Elliott 800, 900 and 4100 series computersInvestigates the mergers, takeovers and eventual closure of the Borehamwood laboratories, and the demise of Elliott-Automation and its successors, ICL and GECThis unique text will be of great interest to historians of technology and business, and will also appeal to the general reader curious about the emergence of digital computing in Britain and the work of the previously unsung computer pioneers of the Elliott-Automation laboratories at Borehamwood.Simon Lavington is Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at the University of Essex. Among his many publications is the book Early British Computers.
