In Alamein standen 195.000 Soldaten in 11 Divisionen 50.000 Deutschen (vier Divisionen) und 54.000 Italienern (acht Divisionen) gegenüber, die ihre zahlenmäßige und waffentechnische Überlegenheit nutzen konnten, um die Achsenmächte zu besiegen. In den nächsten Wochen machten die Alliierten stetige Fortschritte und zwangen Rommel zu einem kämpferischen Rückzug in die Sicherheit, bis seine Armee in Tunesien mit einer anderen Armee der Achsenmächte zusammentraf. Die Kämpfe Ende 1942 zwangen jedoch alle Achsenmächte, den Kriegsschauplatz zu verlassen, so dass Afrika zum ersten Mal seit Kriegsbeginn für die Alliierten sicher war. Heinz Wilhelm Guderian war einer der angesehensten Kommandeure und Theoretiker des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Als innovativer Panzerkommandant war er ein Pionier der deutschen Blitzkriegstaktik und damit eine äußerst einflussreiche Figur für die Art und Weise, wie der Krieg geführt wurde. Guderians Profil war nicht immer das, was man von einem Mann mit seinen Fähigkeiten und seinem Einfluss erwartet hätte, was auf die Form seiner Karriere zurückzuführen ist. Als deutscher Befehlshaber während des Krieges kämpfte Guderian für eines der schrecklichsten Regime der Geschichte. Während seine Fähigkeiten respektiert werden, fällt es schwer, einen Mann zu feiern, der die Truppen des Reiches geführt hat, vor allem zu einem solchen Erfolg.
