Free Download Sebastian Balfour, "Deadly Embrace: Morocco and the Road to the Spanish Civil War"
English | 2002 | ISBN: 0199252963 | PDF | pages: 375 | 17.0 mb
Combining military, political, cultural, social, and oral history, Sebastian Balfour narrates for the first time the development of a brutalized, interventionist army that played a crucial role in the victory of the Francoists in the Spanish Civil War. Spain's new colonial venture in Morocco in the early twentieth-century turned into a bloody war against the tribes resisting the Spanish invasion of their lands. After suffering a succession of heavy military disasters against some of the most accomplished guerrillas in the world, the Spanish army turned to chemical warfare and dropped massive quantities of mustard gas on civilians. Dr Balfour exposes this previously closely guarded secret using evidence from Spanish military archives and from survivors in Morocco. He also narrates the daily life of soldiers in the war as well as the self-images and tensions among the colonial officers. After looking at the motives that drove Moroccans to resist or cooperate with Spain, the author describes the contradictory pictures among Spaniards of Moroccan collaborators and foes. Finally, he examines the Spanish colonial army's response to the Second Republic of 1931-1936 and its brutal march through Spain in the Civil War.

Free Download Charles A. Mendenhall - Deadly Duo: The B-25 and B-26 in WWII
Specialty Press | 1981 | ISBN: 0933424221 | English | 166 pages | PDF | 147.53 MB
The photos in this edition are black and white. Deadly Duo is a highly photographic review covering two of the most fascinating medium bombers of WWII, the North American B-25 Mitchell and the Martin B-26 Marauder. The North American B-25 was a boxy appearing, stable performing plane with a structure capable of absorbing major redesign and field modifications. Its rugged, forgiving nature allowed use in the difficult South Pacific where crude landing strips, supply shortages and ground-level attack missions were daily occurrences. Its modifications ranged from lightened photo reconnaissance planes to 12- and 14-gun models with nose-mounted cannon. The Martin B-26, on the other hand, was a very streamlined, state-of-the-art aircraft. Its short wingspan, big engines, and enormous bomb bay resulted in a high speed aerial hot rod. the type of plane a pilot had to fly all the time. Limited prop clearance, long runway requirements and demanding maintenance needs ruled out the South Pacific, so Europe became the battle ground over which the B-26 saw action. Although initial experiences were marginal at best, eventual modifications to the aircraft and changes in combat tactics resulted in the B-26 compiling one of the better survival records of the war. Deadly Duo: The B-25 and B-26 in World War II is a detailed overview of two important aircraft, with particular emphasis on their development and combat histories. Included are over 225 photographs, 10 pieces of original artwork produced for this volume and special Data Directory sections which provide specifications as well as performance and production information for each model of the two aircraft.

Free Download De persecutione Anglicana by Robert Persons S.J.: A Critical Edition of the Latin Text with English Translation, Commentary and Introduction ... Series: Early Modern Texts and Anthologies) by Victor Houliston
English | December 14, 2023 | ISBN: 1350379344 | 288 pages | MOBI | 62 Mb
Presenting the text of a notorious Jesuit attack on Queen Elizabeth I's treatment of her Catholic subjects, this volume highlights the European context of the English Reformation and Robert Persons's role as propagandist. In De persecutione Anglicana, Robert Persons (1546-1610) graphically describes the conditions in prisons, the harassment of Catholics at home and the gruesome manner of execution for treason. The work culminates in the arrest of the famous Jesuit martyr Edmund Campion, with rapidly revised versions bringing the narrative up to date after Campion's execution on 1 December 1581. Written in Latin to appeal to readers throughout Europe, it was translated into French, Italian and German, making it arguably the most important Latin martyrological work by an English Catholic of the Elizabethan period. This critical edition comprises the Latin text, English translation and commentary, and a textual history, appending additional material from the revised versions. Persons was actively involved in the drive to restore Roman Catholicism in England, as missionary strategist, controversialist and founder of English colleges abroad. He worked closely with the superior general of the Society of Jesus, Claudio Acquaviva, negotiating with Philip II of Spain, the Duke of Guise, the Duke of Parma and successive popes. Thanks to the growth of early modern British Catholic studies, his prolific and provocative English writings attract increasing scholarly attention, but his Latin texts have often been glossed over.

Free Download De Gaulle and Churchill: The Foundations of a Perplexing Franco-British Relationship, 1940-1946
English | November 4, 2025 | ASIN: B0CY3M94V2 | 377 pages | EPUB (True) | 5.07 MB
De Gaulle and Churchill examines the tense and complicated relationship between General de Gaulle as leader of the Free French on the one hand and Winston Churchill and the British Government on the other. Evan McGilvray shows that De Gaulle was a career soldier, not a politician by any means, prior to 1940 but stepped into the leadership vacuum after the fall of France to provide a vital figurehead and rallying point for the Free French movement. His experiences in WW1, where he had served with distinction and was decorated but then was captured and so missed the nadir of despair expressed in the mutiny of 1917, meant he did not share the general defeatism of his peers in 1940. De Gaulle had demonstrated between the wars that he understood modern warfare and the need for modernization and reform of the French forces. Churchill valued the Free French contribution, particularly the French colonies as bulwarks to the British Middle East and jumping-off points for a Mediterranean counteroffensive, but demonstrated his ruthless willingness to ride roughshod over French sensibilities. This was most famously demonstrated by the sinking of the French fleet to prevent it falling into German hands. The author traces their difficult relationship from the dark days of the Fall of France, to the final victory, with de Gaulle by then installed as head of the provisional government of the French Republic. This fascinating study concludes with the immediate post-war period, by which time Churchill and de Gaulle had developed a warmer, more mutually respectful relationship.
