Ana-Maria Buga, "Novel Therapies of Oxidative Stress-Induced Age-Related Neurodegenerative Diseases"
English | ISBN: 3725822255 | 2024 | 220 pages | PDF | 24 MB
This Special Issue aims to address several important questions regarding the relationship between neurodegenerative disorders and oxidative stress: First, (i) is the process of neurodegeneration a "one-way ticket" to neuronal death, programmed early in life? And second, (ii) can it be prevented by neuroprotective interventions? The growing body of literature on nutraceuticals, nutrigenomics, and nutrigenetics demonstrates their promise as powerful neuroprotectors for future novel therapies that naturally enhance antioxidant capacity. Furthermore, different active compounds that target oxidative stress prove their efficiency. In this Special Issue, experts in the field share their research findings and review the latest findings in the field of neurodegenerative disorder interventions and disease mechanisms. With this collection of articles, we provide some future direction for clinicians and patients dealing with neurodegenerative diseases.

Caroline Hovanec, "Notes on Vermin"
English | ISBN: 0472077201 | 2025 | 204 pages | EPUB | 1343 KB
Vermin-rats, cockroaches, pigeons, mosquitoes, and other pests-are, to most people, objects of disgust. And vermin metaphors, likening human beings to these loathed creatures, appear in the ugliest forms of political rhetoric. Indeed, vermin imagery has often been used to denigrate poor, foreign, or racialized people. Yet many writers have reclaimed vermin, giving new meaning to creeping rodents, swarming insects, and wriggling worms.

Martin Schermaier, "Norms of Dependency in Late Antique and Early Medieval Societies: Contextualising Roman Legal Terminology "
English | ISBN: 3111659526 | 2025 | 286 pages | EPUB | 2 MB
Late antique and early medieval normative sources frequently employ Roman legal terminology to denote a person's legal inferiority, and thus suggest the continued relevance of the concepts associated with these terms. However, it is far from clear to what extent the use of identical terminology actually indicates the similarity of social phenomena. There is ample evidence of important changes regarding the rights and duties of enslaved persons and the development or emergence of other, new, forms of asymmetrical dependency. This raises the question to what extent consistency in terminology and legal practice is actually an indicator of the stability of social structures. Against this background, a group of scholars of legal, ecclesiastical, and social history were invited to a conference at the BCDSS in March 2022 to scrutinise different law codes and legal sources for their evidence of dependency. The result are these ten papers that truly enhance our understanding of slavery and other dependency relations in late antique and early medieval societies from c. 100 to c. 900 CE.

Amie L. Thomasson, "Norms and Necessity"
English | ISBN: 0190098198 | 2020 | 252 pages | MOBI | 557 KB
Claims about what is metaphysically necessary or possible have long played a central role in metaphysics and other areas of philosophy. Such claims are traditionally thought of as aiming to describe a special kind of modal fact or property, or perhaps facts about other possible worlds. But that assumption leads to difficult ontological, epistemological, and methodological puzzles. Should we accept that there are modal facts or properties, or other possible worlds? If so, what could these things be? How could we come to know what the modal facts or properties are? How can we resolve philosophical debates about what is metaphysically necessary or possible?
