Edward Said: The Politics of an Oppositional Intellectual
English | 3 Jun. 2025 | ASIN: B0DLPVLMW9 | 316 pages | EPUB (True) | 2.01 MB
"A learned and intimate exploration of Said's thought with deep relevance for today's debates about Palestine and Israel and American intellectual life."-Peter Beinart, author of Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza An exploration of the political thought of one of the twentieth century's most influential thinkers and the foremost advocate for the Palestinian cause in the West Edward Said was one of the most influential intellectuals of the twentieth century. A literary scholar with an aesthete's temperament, he did not experience his political awakening until the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, which transformed his thinking and led him to forge ties with political groups and like-minded scholars. Said's subsequent writings, which cast light on the interplay between cultural representation and the exercise of Western political power, caused a seismic shift in scholarly circles and beyond. In this intimate intellectual biography, by a close friend and confidant, Nubar Hovsepian offers fascinating insight into the evolution of Said's political thought. Through analysis of Said's seminal works and the debates surrounding them, Edward Said: The Politics of an Oppositional Intellectual traces the influence of Foucault on Said, and how Said eventually diverged from this influence to arrive at a more pronounced understanding of agency, resistance, and liberation. He consequently affiliated more closely with Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, and more contemporaneously, with his friends the late Eqbal Ahmad and Ibrahim Abu-Lughod. Said held that it is the intellectual's responsibility to expose lies and deceptions of the holders of power. A passionate advocate for the Palestinian cause, his solidarity did not prevent him from launching a sustained critique of the Palestinian leadership. Hovsepian charts both Said's engagement with the Palestinian national movement and his exchanges with a host of intellectuals over Palestine, arguing that Said's interventions have succeeded in changing the parameters of the discourse in the humanities, and among younger Jews searching for political affiliation. Drawing on his diaries, in which he recorded his meetings with Said, as well as access to some of Said's private letters, Hovsepian illuminates, in rich detail, the trajectory of Said's political thinking and the depth and breadth of his engagement with peers and critics over issues that continue to resonate to this day.

Education Systems Around the World by 3G Elearning
English | January 1, 2023 | ISBN: 1984679090 | 362 pages | PDF | 13 Mb
A change in time influences culture as well as people's way of life and society from generation to generation. A change in time prompts new inventions and technologies, as in the twenty-first century when scientific inventions and the latest technologies are the basis for trade. The importance of education cannot be overstated. It is the key to success in the future and to a wide range of opportunities in our lives. Education has many advantages. It helps students plan for work or pursue higher education when they graduate from university, as it illuminates a person's mind and thinking. Having an education in an area allows people to think, feel, and behave in a way that contributes to their success, and improves their personal satisfaction, as well as their community's. Education also prepares people for life by developing their personality, thinking, and dealing with others. Educating people is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world and to enlighten ourselves. It makes people a special status in their own society and everywhere they live. The reason for this is that quality education enables a person to interpret things correctly and apply what they learn to real-life situations. A quality education includes a number of factors: learning resources, technology, modules enrolled, lecturing methodology, attachments, qualifications, co-curricular activities, performance awards, perspectives of students and lecturers regarding the operating management of the institution, as well as opinions and appraisals about education.

Education Policy: Process, Themes and Impact (Leadership for Learning) By H. Stevenson
2006 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 0415377714 | PDF | 1 MB
The study of educational leadership makes little sense unless it is in relation to who the leaders are, how they are leading, what is being led, and with what effect. Based on the premise that learning is at the heart of leadership and that leaders themselves should be learners, the Leadership for Learning series explores the connections between educational leadership, policy, curriculum, human resources and accountability. Each book in the series approaches its subject matter through a three-fold structure of process, themes and impact. Series Editors - Clive Dimmock, Mark Brundrett and Les Bell As global pressures focus increasing attention on the outcomes of education policy and on their implications for economic prosperity and social citizenship, the experience of each individual learner is decisively shaped by the wider policy environment. However, there is often an underdeveloped understanding of how education policy is formed, what drives it and how it impacts on schools and colleges. This book explicitly makes these connections and links them to the wider challenges of educational leadership in a modern context. Education Policyis divided into three sections, which examine: the development of policy at the levels of the nation state and individual institutions the forces that shape policies with emphasis on human capital theory, citizenship and social justice and accountability research-based case studies highlighting the application of policy in a range of situations. The bookprovides a valuable resource for students, practitioners, middle managers and educational leaders in all sectors, both in the UK and internationally, who are engaged on masters and doctoral degrees, or undertaking leadership training and preparation programmes.

Educating the Net Generation: How to Engage Students in the 21st Century By Bob Pletka EdD
2007 | 208 Pages | ISBN: 1595800239 | PDF | 7 MB
In examining the unique characteristics of the Net Generation, this book addresses the national problem of escalating high-school dropout rates and student disengagement and offers solutions as to how to best involve students of the millennial generation.Besides contrasting this generation's educational needs and expectations to those of their Gen-X parents and Baby Boomer grandparents, the narrative examines why many students resist participating in formalized education in schools and drop out. Subsequent chapters featuring student interviews and photographs synthesize the perspectives of current high schoolers as to their experiences, beliefs, and thoughts on learning while a parallel set of parent interviews, surveys, and photographs reveal what factors parents feel are important in their child's education and how they would like to see schools engage their children in learning. Recommendations for changes in school policy and financial investment critical to turning the situation around are also included, along with an inventory/checklist for parents, teachers, and school administrators to determine if their individual school environment has what it takes to keep students motivated and engaged.

Educating the Muslims of America By Yvonne Y Haddad, Farid Senzai, Jane I Smith
2009 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 0195375203 | PDF | 2 MB
As the U.S. Muslim population continues to grow, Islamic schools are springing up across the American landscape. Especially since the events of 9/11, many have become concerned about what kind of teaching is going on behind the walls of these schools, and whether it might serve to foster the seditious purposes of Islamist extremism. The essays collected in this volume look behind those walls and discover both efforts to provide excellent instruction following national educational standards and attempts to inculcate Islamic values and protect students from what are seen as the dangers of secularism and the compromising values of American culture. Also considered here are other dimensions of American Islamic education, including: new forms of institutions for youth and college-age Muslims; home-schooling; the impact of educational media on young children; and the kind of training being offered by Muslim chaplains in universities, hospitals, prisons, and other such settings. Finally the authors look at the ways in which Muslims are rising to the task of educating the American public about Islam in the face of increasing hostility and prejudice. This timely volume is the first dedicated entirely to the neglected topic of Islamic education.

Educating for Community Cohesion: Promoting Tolerance and Ethnocultural Empathy (Palgrave Studies in Global Citizenship Education and Democracy) by Wendy A. Booth
English | November 16, 2025 | ISBN: 3032064511 | 221 pages | PDF, EPUB | 2.76 Mb
This book demonstrates how tolerance and ethnocultural empathy can be taught in secondary school citizenship classrooms through the application of sociology and social psychology. Combining theoretical, pedagogical, and policy perspectives, it presents the TEEMA (Tolerance and Ethnocultural Empathy for Mutual Acceptance) Resources and reports on mixed methods case study research in two contrasting Welsh schools. The findings show how targeted lessons on topics such as prejudice, labelling theory, in group/out group dynamics and media influence can move pupils from 'thin' tolerance (peaceful coexistence) towards 'thick' tolerance (empathy, mutuality and celebration of diversity). This interdisciplinary approach offers practical, transferable strategies and resources for educators, policymakers and youth practitioners seeking to foster inclusion, reduce prejudice and strengthen community cohesion - in the UK and beyond.
