Da keine orientalistischen Stellen in Deutschland verfügbar waren, richteten sich die Überlegungen auf eine Forschungsreise nach Nordostasien (Amurgebiet), die vom American Museum of Natural History in New York in Aussicht genommen war, sowie ein anderes Projekt, das von den Petersburger Orientalisten Wilhelm Radloff und Carl Salemann ventiliert wurde und eine Forschungsreise nach Zentralasien vorsah.
