First, it investigates the immediate responses to refugee movements following the suppression of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution by Soviet troops. Second, it examines the responses to individuals seeking asylum after being displaced during the post-Yugoslav wars of the 1990s. Third, it analyses the responses of the same countries to refugees fleeing Global South countries (predominantly Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan) in 2015 and 2016. Finally, it explores how these countries responded to the mass displacement of refugees from Ukraine. The book argues that these countries have positioned themselves as "transit" or temporary protection countries in order to avoid assuming long-term responsibility for a larger number of refugees. As a consequence, they granted various forms of temporary legal status to refugees that differed from the refugee status defined in the 1951 Refugee Convention. These legal statuses were hierarchical (in terms of the rights attached to them) and racialized, with the fewest rights granted to refugees from the Global South and other negatively racialized groups. The book traces the usage of self-serving politics of diversity and selective memory to legitimise why refugees could not be protected long-term in these countries, and also why there were such differences in treatment of refugees. ![]() Holly Bridges, "Reframe Your Thinking Around Autism: How the Polyvagal Theory and Brain Plasticity Help Us Make Sense of Autism" English | ISBN: 1849056722 | 2015 | 104 pages | MOBI | 602 KB Outlining a new, optimistic way to understand autism, this concise and accessible book offers practical ideas to help children on the spectrum grow. ![]() Reformpädagogik im Bildungssystem: Naturpädagogik, Waldpädagogik und Erlebnispädagogik für die moderne Bildungspraxis Deutsch | 30. Thompson 2003 | 316 Pages | ISBN: 0521544122 | PDF | 7 MB The subject of this book is the confrontation between the American reform tradition, historically inward-looking, and the first of the world conflicts in which the United States has been involved in the twentieth century. It focuses upon those writers and journals most prominently associated with 'the progressive movement' and examines their response to the First World War and the effect of the war on their thinking. During 'the progressive era' a number of journalists and authors had acquired national reputations as social critics or as spokesmen for reform. This thoroughly researched account revises earlier views about both the attitudes of progressives toward the war and the decline of 'the progressive movement.' It will be of interest to students of the intellectual history of American foreign policy as well as of progressivism. ![]() Reform as Learning: When School Reform Collides with School Culture and Community Politics By Lea Hubbard, Mary Kay Stein, Hugh Mehan 2006 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 0415953774 | PDF | 3 MB This Book explores the full range of critical issues pertaining to urban school reform by looking closely at the recent reform efforts in San Diego. Drawing on the systemic school reform initiative that was launched in San Diego in the 1990's, this book provides a unique focus on the real action "on the ground" to explore all layers of the school reform process-from leadership in the central office, to work with principals and teachers, to the impact on how teachers worked with students in the classroom. In order to provide an account of the actual enactment of reform, the authors draw on careful ethnographic research collected over the entire four years of the San Diego reforms. They identify not only how teachers, principals, and other district educators were shaped by the large-scale reforms, but also the ways in which the reform unfolded. In doing, the book identifies more broadly how actors throughout a school system can change the views of leaders and impact the larger reform process. ![]() Reflexive Ethnographic Science By Robert Aunger 2003 | 296 Pages | ISBN: 0759102759 | PDF | 5 MB Aunger proposes a solution to a fundamental debate in contemporary ethnography: the source of ethnographic authority. The value of professional reflection is widely recognized, but there is a difference between acknowledging it and doing it. This book takes up that challenge, providing planners' reflections on past practice as well as prompts for reflecting in the midst of planning episodes. It explains a reflection framework and employs it in seven case studies written by planning educators who also practice. The cases reveal practical judgments made during the planning episode and takeaways for practice, as the planners used logic and emotion, and applied convention and invention. The practical judgments are explained from the perspective of the authors' personal experiences, purposes, and professional style, and their interpretation of the rich context that underpins the cases including theories, sociopolitical aspects, workplace setting, and roles. The book seeks to awaken students and practitioners to the opportunities of a pragmatic, reflective approach to planning practice. ![]() Reflections on the Triangular Relations of Beijing-Taipei-Washington Since 1995: Status Quo at the Taiwan Straits? By Shiping Hua 2006 | 320 Pages | ISBN: 1403970610 | PDF | 2 MB This study explores the Taiwan issue from the three perspectives of Beijing, Taipei, and Washington since Taiwan leader Lee Teng-hui's visit to Cornell University in 1995. These were explored not only in terms of the three parties involved, but also in terms of the differences within each party, although these divisions are not as obvious in Beijing. The editor has gathered together four leading scholars from each of the three geographic areas to discuss the Taiwan issue from the perspectives of international politics, domestic politics, economics, and security. At the center of the debate is the issue of the status quo at the Taiwan Strait. |
