In the first part, Habermas examines the legacy of Kant and assesses some recent attempts to return to metaphysical modes of thought. While sceptical of these attempts, Habermas also rejects the radical critique of reason which is espoused by some contemporary philosophers who have been influenced by Nietzsche. In the second part, Habermas develops and defends the concept of communicative reason. He focuses on two specific the formation of identity and the ineffableness of the individual; and the relation between philosophy, scientific knowledge and literature. ![]() Sattar Alshryda, "Postgraduate Paediatric Orthopaedics: The Candidate's Guide to the FRCS " English | ISBN: 1107644585 | 2014 | 306 pages | PDF | 29 MB The latest book in the Postgraduate Orthopaedics series brings together the information that every trainee needs to know when faced with paediatric cases in their clinical practice and the FRCS (Tr & Orth) examination. If postcolonial theory has highlighted how white colonizers created images of racialized Others which project their own self-hatred or disavowal, Joseph Tonda here shows how these images have in turn colonized Western imaginaries. He argues that the Global North's obsession with its own phantoms takes a newly powerful form in the dazzling images of postcolonial screens. With examples ranging from Nicki Minaj to Osama Bin Laden and child soldier Johnny Mad Dog, Tonda reflects on power by analyzing the dazzlements of both Central Africa and the West, showing how African life prefigures Western experiences. Translated from its original French, Postcolonial Imperialism is a prescient critique of authoritarian attempts to enforce alternate realities, and of the many ways screens can distort our vision. ![]() Alice Sparkly Kat, "Postcolonial Astrology: Reading the Planets through Capital, Power, and Labor" English | ISBN: 1623175305 | 2021 | 336 pages | AZW3 | 535 KB Tapping into the political power of magic and astrology for social, community, and personal transformation. ![]() Oliver Stuenkel, "Post-Western World: How Emerging Powers Are Remaking Global Order" English | ISBN: 1509504567 | 2016 | 180 pages | MOBI | 1162 KB With the United States' superpower status rivalled by a rising China and emerging powers like India and Brazil playing a growing role in international affairs, the global balance of power is shifting. Rather, it suggests that a pornographic star can be treated as a cultural product which obtains rich cultural meanings. It contributes to the debate between the global homogenization paradigm and the creolization paradigm which predominates in multiple disciplines, through a thorough examination of the entire process of the cross-cultural migration of Aoi Sola, a Japanese adult video (AV) actress who has achieved amazing popularity in mainland China since 2010. Through fifteen-month participant observation inside the two Chinese agencies of Sola, this study reveals that the transformative intermediaries play a significant role in the transformation of the cultural product in the Chinese context, even though their operations are usually invisible to outsiders. The findings challenge the conventional scholarly assumption that foreign products produced by global producers are consumed "directly" by local consumers or that the significance of these intermediaries can be ignored. This study further extends the participant observation inside the realistic field to the virtual space of media in different countries, which can be called the second field. It demonstrates that multiple local groups, including intermediaries, Chinese commercial news portals, Party media, and Chinese Internet users, respond to the dominant ideologies in Chinese society by reinterpreting Sola in different, even contradictory, ways. Thus, this research refutes the presumption that a local society is a coherent monolith in the acceptance of foreign cultural products. The book also deepens the reader's understanding of Chinese Internet usage. ![]() Ben Shapiro, "Porn Generation: How Social Liberalism Is Corrupting Our Future" English | ISBN: 0895260166 | 2005 | 232 pages | AZW3 | 576 KB Shapiro captures a generation through first-person reporting, interviews with refugees from the porn industry, conversations with psychologist, educators, and students, and a telling cultural critique. ![]() Sebastián Ureta, "Policy Experiments: A View From Elsewhere " English | ISBN: 1009590863 | 2026 | 75 pages | PDF | 2 MB This Element introduces a new conceptualization of policy experiments. Beyond their mainstream understanding as randomized trials, policy experiments are seen as speculative instances for testing innovative policy instruments to address public concerns. Drawing on Science and Technology Studies, this conception of policy experiments comprises four interrelated processes. First, there is an encounter with a charismatic foreign policy instrument, generating imaginaries of future success. Second, a local issue is problematized, presenting the instrument as its ultimate solution. Third, an experimental mesocosm is assembled to test this problematization empirically. Finally, evaluations of this test are conducted, usually leading to further experiments. The book exemplifies these processes with case studies from Chile, a world leader in policy experimentation in the last decades. The ongoing troubles of public governance worldwide prompt us to conclude by arguing for careful modes of policy experimentation, more tentative, ethical, and inclusive forms of acting in our fragile worlds. ![]() Gordon Gray, "Polar Voyages" English | ISBN: 1445647486 | 2015 | 288 pages | PDF | 11 MB On a blustery, West Highland summer's day in the early 1950s, a black-hulled mail steamer ploughed its way northwards from Mallaig up through the Sound of Sleat between the mainland of Scotland and the Isle of Skye. The spray from its bow wave flew high up her sides and dark smoke was tugged from her bright red funnel by the wind. A small boy, aged about two or three, wearing a green knitted top and blue dungarees, sat on the warm deck peering through the rails, his face smiling widely with excitement. The gentle roll of the wooden deck, the smoke blowing from the funnel, the sea splashing past in the wake, the seagulls wheeling overhead squawking furiously and the mixture of strange smells all filled him with excitement and enthralled him. In one small boy a love of ships and the sea had been born. This love grew to embrace the Polar regions when, as a young schoolboy, he first saw the gracefully tough deep-sea trawlers that sailed to the far-off Arctic seas. He knew instantly that one day he wanted to go there himself. |
