Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease
Free Download Ed. Galimberti, Daniela, "Biomarkers for Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease"
English | 2008 | pages: 317 | ISBN: 1604569913 | PDF | 4,3 mb
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the deposition into the brain of amyloid peptide, which originates a cascade of inflammatory events leading eventually to neuronal death. These pathological events likely occur several years before the clinical manifestation of the disease, implying that potential therapeutical interventions are currently started too late to give beneficial results. Recently, growing attention has been paid to the Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), considered the prodromal phase of AD, as 80% of subjects with MCI have been shown to develop AD within 5 years. Several studies aimed to identify biological markers to differentiate between normal aging and incipient AD have been carried out, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and neuroimaging. In particular, the evaluation of CSF Amyloid beta (1-42) levels, together with tau and phospotau, are of help for recognizing early AD. Besides, a number of additional molecules are altered in CSF. Other early modifications have been observed in peripheral cells, such as fibroblasts and leukocytes, as well as in serum from patients. Biomarkers for AD represent important tools supporting the clinical diagnosis and the choice of potential therapeutic options. Moreover, they would be of great help for the selection of cohorts of homogeneous patients for clinical trials with new disease-modifying compounds. This book is aimed to give an update about MCI as prodromal Alzheimer's disease (AD), to discuss the main known pathological mechanisms at the basis of AD and to describe the possible biomarkers to be used for an early diagnosis of the disease.

Biohydrometallurgical Recycling of Metals from Industrial Wastes
Free Download Biohydrometallurgical Recycling of Metals from Industrial Wastes by Hong Hocheng, Mital Chakankar, Umesh Jadhav
English | March 13, 2025 | ISBN: 1032750782 | 308 pages | True PDF, EPUB | 20 Mb
Although many available metal recycling methods are simple and fast, they are also expensive and cause environmental pollution. Biohydrometallurgical processing of metals offers an alternative to overcome these issues, as the use of biological means not only helps to conserve dwindling ore resources but also fulfills the unambiguous need to extract metals in nonpolluting, low-energy, and low-cost way. This book covers biohydrometallurgy and its application in the recovery of metals from secondary sources like wastes. Fully updated for a new edition, it provides readers with a comprehensive overview of different wastes for metal recovery and biological treatment methods that are both environmentally friendly and economically viable.

Biodiversity for Low and Zero Carbon Buildings A Technical Guide for New Build
Free Download Carol Williams, "Biodiversity for Low and Zero Carbon Buildings: A Technical Guide for New Build"
English | 2010 | pages: 128 | ISBN: 1859463533 | PDF | 8,9 mb
The built environment has the potential to have a major impact on biodiversity, not least with the increasingly demanding requirements to design more energy efficient and airtight buildings, leaving less space for species to inhabit. Up until the publication of this book, there was no one place where architects, developers, consultant ecologists, and all those involved in low and zero carbon buildings could find out about how to incorporate provision for biodiversity within their developments. In this groundbreaking book, author Dr Carol Williams has specially commissioned architects to produce some much needed model designs and practical guidance for the industry. The book also provides a useful summary of all the legislation. Authored by Dr Carol Williams of the Bat Conservation Trust and Chair of the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) Biodiversity Group, the book is also supported by Natural England and the UK-GBC. This is an essential read for architects, developers, contractors, asset managers, landlords, consultant ecologists, planning officers and building control officers.

Biodiversity and Conservation in Europe
Free Download David L. Hawksworth, Alan T. Bull, "Biodiversity and Conservation in Europe"
English | 2007 | pages: 435 | ISBN: 1402068646 | PDF | 8,5 mb
This book brings together a selection of original studies submitted to Biodiversity and Conservation that address biodiversity and conservation in Europe. Europe is certainly the most intensively inventoried region of the world; detailed maps are available for species distributions while action plans are being drawn up for species under threat. At the same time, the wildlife of Europe has been subject to enormous human pressures, with limited 'wilderness' sites remaining in most countries. Europe consequently presents a case-study of what the human impact on biodiversity has been, and also what can be done to improve the situation.
